You might remember a story I posted about last year. One day, in the spring, someone was "kind" enough to leave a box on our doorstep. Inside this box was a cage...inside the cage a white gerbil. Next to the box was a bag full of this creature's supplies, like food and cedar chips.
The people who dropped this off obviously knew that first off, I would take him in. And second, they knew that our dog, Tazz, who was outside, at the time (his leash is on the front porch), would not harm either the gerbil...or them!! We had heard Tazz barking up a storm, but figured he was just barking at someone walking past the house. A few minutes later, when the barks continued, we opened the front door to find this little white thing, abandoned by his owners. We brought him inside and since then, he has been a unplanned member of our family.
Yesterday afternoon, I noticed he wasn't doing too good. He had been fine the day before. Normally when I vacuum around his cage (he kept kicking out the cedar chips), he would run to the front of the cage. Yesterday, he didn't move. I took him out of the cage and I knew the end wasn't too far off.
I told the kids so they would have a chance to say goodbye. He passed away last evening. The "funeral" is set for after school today.
I would normally refer to the gerbil as "he who has no name" as I would call him Mickey but my girls, for whatever reason, said he looked like a Timmy!!
I have my suspisions as to who left him on the porch (again, someone who know us, knows Tazz is friendly...and since the box he was in was from Avon...and our neighbor, who has kids, sells Avon.....it's not hard to figure out
) His cage is already out to the curb for the trash pick up this morning. In a way, I want them to see this...to know that someone gave a home to something that they viewed as a throw away pet. I am not that mean and the cage is inside a green trash bag. Still...........they made me angry.....................
