My nephew went out yesterday and broke his shoulder! We are due to leave for WDW next Wednesday!!! We don't know what to do now, should we postpone until June or will there be enough for him to do without feeling left out? My neice and other nephew are also going, so to all you parents out there has this ever happened to you and what did you do about it?

Yikes. A shoulder is a tough one. Foot, even leg, I would say he could've still rode just about everything, but he wouldn't want to jostle that shoulder around. How old is he? You didn't book a package did you? If you did, you need to explain your situation so you don't get charged for a cancellation. He won't be able to swim either. Wow, if this is his once-in-a-life-time or first trip, I would say postpone.

I agree - any other bone, it would have been easier to still ride the rides. The shoulder would leave very little for him to do, plus give you problem with crowds and most types of transportation (jostling, people bumping into him, the possibility of standing with no way to hold on). Plus, its not super visible to others that he is injured. Also, a young boy is not going to like having to sit out all the more intense rides when his siblings/cousins get to ride. It could be very rough for him with that factor alone

How much $ would you be out to postpone for less than 6 months?

My DH recently broke his collarbone and there's no way he could have managed WDW a week later. Even riding in the car was uncomfortable. I would imagine it would be difficult for your nephew to do anything with a broken shoulder, plus he'll either be in some degree of pain or under the influence of pain killers. Not the best way to experience WDW!

I have to agree to postpone. The problem with a shoulder is there is no cast. My son has broke a collarbone and my daughter has broken her upper arm just below the shoulder. In both cases, they just had slings. The problem is that first week it is still quite painful and jarring it would be hard on him. So he wouldn't be able to ride any rides that throw you around. Also it is harder to keep kids from doing more than they should when it is in just a sling (although this is usually later in the healing process).

Now my son broke his arm just above the wrist when we were on vacation to Wisconsin Dells - known for their water parks. We continued on, used a water proof cover for the cast, and he still got to do a lot (although he skipped the body slides and stuck with the tube rides. He will remember that 13th birthday! (An emergency room in Kernsey Nebraska was not his first choice of activities - but if he watched where he was walking, he won't have tripped over the curb.)

Well, no it's not a package, I'm the AP holder. And I do agree with all of you. It is a tough call. He has been there before and actually his bother and sister had to stay home for the trip that he went on. I know that we can wait until Saturday to cancel and not lose our deposit, so I advised my SIL to wait and see. Thanks for all your imput.

Is he in a sling or a clavicle strap? I would check with his ortho doc and get his/her opinion. I wouldn't imagine he'd still be taking pain meds anymore. See how he is tolerating daily activities. Kids are so resiliant and heal much more quickly than us adults! I like your wait and see plan! You may be able to go after all!

How old is he? Did he brake it (requiring surgery)? or fracture it? How much pain is he in? I'm a trauma nurse and mom of 3-I'd have to have that info to form an opinion... :)

I guess super glue, spackle or duct tape would not have helped. It is possible to go to disney world and not ride all the rides that bounce you around
