Key West - what to see and do

Subscribing, hopefully booking 7th cruise this week. A 7 night western in Feb 08! So a return to Key West will be part of the trip.

The Blond Giraffe key lime pie was AMAZING!! I had a traditional slice, but they even have it frozen on a stick and dipped in chocolate. Just thinking about it makes my mouth water.

I may be the odd one out---My mom and I didn't think it was all that great....(we are strange that we love publix key lime pies and appreciate a creamier klp than what the Blonde Giraffe had). Also I was pregnant with severe morning sickness (like super super bad without me realizing it at that particular time).

I'd be interested in other places to get good Key Lime Pie though so I can sample some more when we go back in November to visit my mom.

Has anyone visited the Butterfly Conservatory? I'm trying to decide if this would be a good tour for our group which includes my 7 y/o niece and my MIL.

I have and the only real comment I can make is WHY DIDN'T THEY HAVE SOMETHING THAT INTERESTING WHEN I WAS GROWING UP" - Listen if you will go to the chamber of Commerce which is located right there at Mallory Square, they will not only give you coupons for 10% off for the Butterfly farm, but will answer any and all questions you may have.

Lisa you can come over to the shop and I will let you have a taste of what the REAL Key Lime pie is all about and it is made with REAL key limes :)

When dd was 5 we did the Conch Train (DD5 slept through most of it), and the Butterfly Conservatory which she really enjoyed. We also enjoyed the Mallory Square entertainment around sunset.

When DD was 6 we did the Trolley, and stopped at the Hemingway house, Southernmost point, and the Aquarium. DD6 really got a kick out of petting the nurse sharks! We also watched the "Cat Man" at Mallory Square. This bizarre person had trained house cats doing tricks. It was a strange, and amazing performance!

Does anyone know if the "Cat Man" still performs at Mallory Square?

interesting note (I hope!): the first time we saw the "cat man" was at Pleasure Island - I think it was the honeymoon trip in '91.....he did a performance at the rock themed dance club early one evening!:wizard:

I later thought about that and looked him up to find he was in Key West!!!

Anyone know how far it is to the Southern most point from the docks? Can you walk to it? Thanks!

The Southermost point is at the end of Whitehead Street which you can get to from Mallory Square - if there isn't small children, the walk is almost 2 miles- remember KW is a 2X4 island (almost 2 miles, but we have always said 2 miles) Duval Street is the longest street in the world for it goes from the Gulf of Mexico to the Atlantic Ocean (just a little tidbit you might be interested in).
Hope that will give you an insight.

Wow! That's not too bad...Thanks... I guess you are the person to ask for all things Key West:-) I wanted to know your opinion about the Pirate Soul museum, we are crusing in December and are thinking of going there, but on our own. Diseny does offer an excursion, but it is also to the Shipwreck Historeim, we are going to do one or the other. Have you been to these places? If so, which do you like better? Thanks for your help!

Sorry to hijack this thread a bit. But, can you rent mopeds close to where the ship docks? DH and I thought this might be fun for an hour or two. We've never ridden one. Is it any more difficult than a bike?

I've never been to the "giraffe" but loved both the pie and the atmosphere at Kermits. If he is there his personality is lots of fun.

First first off you never ever need to to "go through an excursion" at least not in Key West. Here are most links that will help answer some of your questions

1)http://www.keywesttravelguide.com/kwtg-header-web-optimized.gif

2)http://www.keywestsearch.com/maps/old_town.jpg

3)http://www.keywest.com/beaches.htm
Now these are just some of the links that I know of - yes I have gone to both of the mentioned places, but you have to remember foremost, my dad's side of the family were "seafarer's" and the stories my granddaddy spun was so interesting that I can still go back in memory and remember his stories - I know my grandmother once showed me a small leather bag that contained coins of gold and after she passed away, they disappeared. My ggreatgrand parents, and their children were on a "cruise" and never returned to their homeland of Denmark, for their ship was lost just off of Key West and my GGgrandparents and one of their children were lost, my GGrandfather and 2 of his siblings were rescued, taken to KW where they were raised by "conchs". This was in the mid or so of 1800's. The house that belonged to my dad's family that was built with the wood that came from ship wrecks and washed up from the ocean is located at 1121 Pine Street. My dad was born there and I heard all the "tales of the sea" there. I believe we have so much history and when I offer tidbits, when you are in my hometown, you can almost feel the atmosphere of what I grew up in.
It now has been "renovated" and sold for quite a bit of monies. Yes I do find both of the museum interesting and couldn't pick a favorite.
Anyhow its past coffee time and will finish answering all the questions, when I get to the shop.

Thank you so much for sharing your story! I am very excited about going to Key West, I hope December comes quick! I have been to Florida many times, but never to KW. So, as a True Key-Wester, where are your favorite places to experience the "True" Key West? What places do you recommend? Thanks again for sharing....

We decided that when we were there, that there didn't seem to be a lot to do as far as excursions, and we wanted more ship time. We walked th the Conch Republic Seafood Restaraunt and to Kermits Key Lime Pie Factory on the corner from the rest and then went back to the ship. We got excellent sunset pictures on the ship.

Frozen Key lime pie dipped in chocolate?? That sounds interesting. Can you tell me how far the Blond Giraffe is? Can we walk there from the port?

I would also like to know!

Where is Kermits?

I don't know the street, but if you are by the big red building with the ship behind you, you stay on that street all th eway to the end, I think about 10 blocks or so. It is right across from the Conch Republic Seafood Restaraunt. Kermit's that is. We really liked Kermit's. He was on the Sidewalk when we got there and my DH got a "Pie" in the chest. He was really funny and interacted with the kids well.
