Key Lime Pie

Thanks, DJM, for the cookie recipe! I am always on the look-out for good cookie recipes. I will definitely try yours.

Of the photos, I think the Flametree BBQ key lime pie looks the most appealing. I always cross Flametree off my list because of outdoor seating and birds (I have a bird phobia), but that pie looks yummy enough to brave the lack of air-conditioning and abundance of begging birds.

I don't know if you have read Pooh's-Honey-Pot Pure Gluttony trip report, but it is really fun stuff. She talks about her experiences with birds at Flame Tree. http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1837106&highlight=flame+tree&page=8

I agree with you though, I think the pictures look good enough to brave the craziness. We are definitely going to try it in June.

DH loved the little key lime mini dessert from Grand Floridian Cafe

Just being back from DW, I can say that I had both the Flame Tree's and Olivia's Key Lime pie, and without a doubt Olivia's was THE BEST!!! (and the rest of the food was GREAT too! our server Cari was the BOMB!!!:worship:) Oh my GOD!! I could not BELIEVE how GREAT the key lime was!!! :cool1: :woohoo:

(and the Yachtsman does NOT have key lime and I was VERY disappointed with them!!! NOT! Worthy of being a Signature service! :headache: (other than a very snooty atmosphere!) :scared:

I've had the Sunshine Seasons Key Lime Pie and didn't like it at all. It was TOO sweet for my tastes. The one at the Flame Tree BBQ was very good though.

I LOVE key lime pie as well, and tried a few on our last trip in Nov. Based on all the reports here, I was so excited to try Sunshine Season. It was horrible to me! It was more of a mousse and a lime flavored pudding then it was a pie. I did not like it at all. I really like Crystal Palace. However the absolute best was from Boardwalk Bakery. Instead of ordering a custom cake, I ordered (for my mom) a 9" key lime pie from the bakery. It was delicious! The best key lime pie ever. I believe they do have tarts there as well that you wouldn't have to order a whole pie.

Funny, we must have the same taste in Key Lime Pie. I hated the one at Sunshine Seasons, it was way too "fluffy" for my taste. And the one at Crystal Palace was the best one I had on our last trip. I also really enjoyed the one at Wolfgang Puck's Cafe. But I'm definitely going to have to try the one from Boardwalk Bakery (at least the tart), if you say it's good! I trust your opinion! :goodvibes And the one from Flame Tree definitely looks up my alley as well.

Olivia's is our first stop on the Key Lime Adventure that begins on the last day of May. We are getting close now. I can't wait to get started eating. :goodvibes Thanks for the enthusiastic post!!! Sorry about the snooty part though. I am intimidated by the Yachtsman already, so your note doesn't help that any.

We just got back from our week at WDW. We managed to try 5 Key Lime Pies and we are headed back in July to try the rest.
Our first dinner was at Olivia's. We enjoyed the atmosphere and the food. The key lime pie was sooooooo rich, I honestly couldn't finish it. My DD and I both liked it. The graham cracker cup/crust it is in, is unique. It was soft and crumbly. The filling was tart and rich. The Mango and Raspberry sauces included with the pie were awesome! I am not a big fan of mangos, but I loved that mango sauce with the key lime pie (I also liked the mango juice at Ohana character breakfast, but that mango margarita at Mexico in EPCOT - I could do without.)

On a scale of 1 - 5 with 1 being good, and 5 being incredibly awesome...
Overall my DD and I gave the Olivia's Key Lime Pie a 4. This was a good pie - extremely rich and the sauces were superb. :thumbsup2:thumbsup2:thumbsup2:thumbsup2

Several places used to have very good Key Lime Pie. Most have now gone to tarts and they are not nearly as good and the one at the Grand Floridian Cafe is a joke. It is a Key Lime postage stamp.

The bakery at BW has a good tart as far as taste and price, Captain Jack's if it has not changes is still in pie form and the one at Captain's Grill while a tart is large and very good.

BCrook, other than Olivia's, which others did you try?

We were also able to try Sunshine Seasons, Grand Floridian Cafe, Flame Tree Barbecue, and Boardwalk Bakery. We still have many more to try.

We tried the Sunshine Seasons Key Lime second. We kind of agree with Minnie on that one. It was more like a mousse. Although - I would eat it again, it wasn't our favorite. My brother's had a long gray hair in it. That was not a pleasant addition. Mine was fine though. We give it a 2 (tasty but not the best). :3dglasses:3dglasses

I am looking forward to trying the Crystal Palace on my next visit. I have never been there.

Loved it at Flame Tree BBQ in AK, but that was the only key lime pie I ate at WDW, so no basis for comparison. I am also from NYC so I am in NO WAY an expert on key lime pie! But I can tell you this...it had that tart-sweet taste, filling was nice and thick, graham cracker crust and was a nice size piece of pie!

Next we tried the Key Lime Pie at Flame Tree Barbecue. And once again, we didn't meet a dessert we didn't like. But my DD thought this pie had a nice crumbly graham cracker crust, but we thought that the filling was "grainy" and the small drop of whip cream didn't help the pie much. We enjoyed our meal at Flame Tree especially eating by the lake. But overall we gave the pie a 2 compared to the other pies. :yay::yay:

Olivia's and that raspberry/mango sauce was the best so far.

We were having a great time wandering around the parks eating pie.

Here is a pic I found of what they serve at Olivia's. This actually looks better than what I had last month -- the cream on mine had been toasted and had a smoky/slightly burnt flavor.

Here is the site that provided the pic (good photos of OKW):

Our's had a smoky taste to the top of the pie too - it was definitely toasted. That is a good picture of the raspberry and mango sauces.

I would have to say Grand Floridian cafe...mhm yummy :)

For my DD birthday we ate at the Grand Floridian Cafe. This place is awesome. Not a lot of people, great food, and the dessert was fantastic. The Key Lime Pie had a chocolate crust, the pie filling was perfectly tart and rich and smooth. The chocolate garnish topped it off. We were very pleased with this pie. The portion is small (not quite the size of a postage stamp), but it was plenty after our meal. This was 5 star Key Lime. :goodvibes:goodvibes:goodvibes:goodvibes:goodvibes

But we still had one more to try - a whole pie at the Boardwalk Bakery.

I forgot to post that We went in May and stayed at the BWV. I was so excited because all I had to do was walk down to the bakery everyday and get me a key lime tart. Both DH and I got one on the first day we were there and I have to say, it was horrible. I was SO disappointed since I fell in love with it a year earlier. But it has changed and to me, is no longer tart at all. It really has a strange taste that is NOT key lime pie in the least.

Sorry to hear that the Key Lime pie at Flame Tree BBQ was not that good. Pictures made it look so good; it looked just like what Key Lime pie should. I am anxiously waiting to hear about the whole pie at Boardwalk Bakery. Did you have to order it in advance?

It is so very interesting how the same food causes so many different reactions from people. I was just about to write about how the Boardwalk Bakery had our favorite pie from this trip. But, as I have said before, all the pies were good, some just better than the others (except maybe the pies with gray hairs in them - yuck!)

We went to the Boardwalk Bakery and tried to order a whole pie for my daughter's birthday. After about 20 minutes the manager came back and said that they just don't have any pie shells anywhere on site. So we had to "settle" for the mini Key Lime Pies (sorry to lead you on like that HolidayFan). The CMs at Boardwalk Bakery were super nice and really wanted to make us a pie. Nevertheless, our mini pies were great. The crust was firm graham cracker, the filling was creamy and not whipped, whipped cream topping along with an orange zest garnish. We went back to buy Key Lime Pies from the bakery several times. We thought this was great pie. We are headed back to the Beach Club for 4th of July and we are looking forward to visiting again. 5 stars!!!!!

KLP PSA:

Just remember one important rule of thumb: when it comes to Key Lime Pie, if it is green it isn't real. Key limes are not green and neither is the juice. True KLP should be clear/white, not green.

I will also add that we did not think the Flame Tree KLP was very good. Average at best. So many people rave about it, but they must not be Floridians, lol. When you grow up on KLP in every restaurant and store you frequent your entire life, your opinion of mass-produced KLP is somewhat lessened.

I love Key LIme Pie and wonder if anyone has had the Key Lime creme brulee at Narcoosee's? I was looking forward to that this coming trip.
How about this:

CHEESECAKE FACTORY KEY LIME CHEESECAKE

1 3/4 cups graham cracker crumbs
5 Tbsp. butter, melted
1 cup plus 1 Tbsp. sugar
3- 8oz. pkgs cream cheese, softened
1 tsp. vanilla
1/2 cup fresh lime juice (about 5 limes) If using key limes or juice, use half
as much.
3 eggs
whipped cream
Preheat oven to 350*. Combine crumbs, butter and 1 Tbsp. sugar in a bowl. Stir
well to to coat all crumbs. Keep it crumbly. Press the crumbs onto the bottom
and half way up the sides of an 8" springform pan. Bake crust for 5 mins.and
set aside.
In large bowl combine cheese, 1 cup sugar and vanilla. Mix with electric mixer
till smooth. Add the lime juice and eggs and continue to beat till smooth and
creamy.
Pour filling into crust. Bake for 60 to 70 mins. If top is turning light brown
it's done. Remove from oven and allow to cool till room temperature. Put into
fridge. When chilled, remove the pan sides and cut. Serve with whipped cream.
I also have the recipe for their pumpkin cheesecake. Let me know if you want it
and i will post it.
