Kevin please, your killing me. They're pronounced puh cons not pea cans

How wide is your paintbrush?

Yes, that was pretty wide wasn't it. I guess what I meant in general by northeRneRs, I was referring to northeasteRneRs - Philly, Boston, New YoRk, JeRsey. In an effort to get discussions going, I just lumped northeRners all together.

I go both ways. When referring to the nut I tend to say peh-kahn. But when referring to the pie it tends to be pee-can pie.

I do that with Caribbean. It's Pirates of the Car-i-BEE-an, but the color is Car-IB'-e-an blue...

I say pea-cans. So does Paula Deen and she is about as southern as you can get.

She's just patronizing the less sophisticated people. Paula Deen has played her way overdone accent to the hilt. It's an act that got old by I think it was her 3rd show, though she's milked it for all it’s worth.

Here in Illinois, it's puh cahn. As I'm sitting here reading this thread and repeating all the different versions, I sound a little like a chicken clucking... Try it- say puh cahn over and over fast!

There you go....being a little ray of sunshine again.

So far you've slammed...

Me
Northerners
Southerners
Paula Deen

All over the way I pronounced the word pecan.

Is it easy being perfect?:rolleyes1

every place has their own ways of prouncoucing or calling things..
Like up north in NY, we say SODA..here in Indiana they call it POP.. its just a regional thing..get over it

Our generic name for soda in the UK is a 'fizzy drink'. So what you call 'orange soda' we call orangeade or an orange fizzy drink.

Puh cahn does sound like a hen clucking, that's why pee can is right.

My word, as I speak in received pronunciation unlike you uncouth Americans, is law. ;)
