Kelly Ripa

Not only would people call you out, you most likely be called a troll, reported to a moderator and probably receive points for the audacity. ;)

It's a real double standard for sure. People on this thread are saying she appears to have an eating disorder and an unhealthy obsession. Um, does Melissa McCarthy and millions and millions of citizens not have an unhealthy obsession with food? Look at all of the obese people with eating disorders. Why are they a protected class but not the "too" skinny people?

As an overweight person I absolutely have an unhealthy relationship with food- I eat my feelings and have ever since I can remember.

Being overweight certainly is not a "protected class". People who are overweight are discriminated against every day and they are NOT protected by law.

I'm not a fan of Kelly's, she just annoys me. I recently watched an episode of taboo that featured a 27 year old woman from London who was anorexic. I watched most of the show with my jaw on the floor, because I found her to be physically horrifying and disturbing. But that is MY perception and everyone's perception is different. At this woman's lowest weight she weighed less than 60lbs, it's obvious something in head was askew, and that's what created her perception. But in all fairness her "sickness" really wasn't any different than those who eat and eat and eat. But as someone else said, I think society has grown more accustomed to seeing over weight people. (NOTE: I said accustomed, not accepting).

I think Kelly struggles with her weight, like most of us do. But does anyone really know what her normal weight should be? Some people honestly can't gain weight. I've had a few friends like that, they eat EVERYTHING and loose two pounds. And those very same friends taught me that they HATE when someone say's they are too skinny, it really hurts their feelings, just as much as someone else would hate's being told they are too fat.

So is it ok to slag people that are over or underweight? Is it ok to make fun of Kelly Ripa AND Melissa McCarthy or just the perceived underweight woman?

The problem is that here on the Dis one is lauded and the other is slammed.

BTW I personally would rather be 10 or 20 pounds underweight than 80 or more pounds overweight but that is a personal choice. I don't discrimintate based on a persons weight. I know plenty of skinny and fat b$#@!es.

I would absolutely rather be underweight as well..... because it is more socially acceptable....

I don't watch the show- but if Kelly does indeed talk about needing to wear spanx and how she needs to lose weight, she has some body issues. That would be like Melissa McCarthy talking about how she just can't put on any weight and she really would like to be 10 or 20 pounds heavier.

And I'm not sure why you assume I think it's okay to "slag" anyone... I'm not even sure what "Slag" means.... unless we're smelting ore...

Well here in Canada "slag" is a widely used word. It means to criticize harshly. Sorry you don't know that there are other meanings for the word.

Also, I really haven't seen any evidence that Kelly Ripa talks about needing to lose weight.

The difference might be that Kelly is dilusional about her weight while Melissa knows she's fat.

Saying Melissa is fat is obvious. Saying that Kelly is too skinny while she moans about having to lose weight is a fair comment.

Both Kelly Ripa and Melissa McCarthy have disordered eating. However, I don't see Melissa McCarthy in a bathing suit on a magazine cover having her figure celebrated.

I guess that's the difference.

Exactly. The only reason it's politically correct to discuss this is because the problem of being underweight is not recognized. Everyone knows the health problems involved in being overweight. If there were a celebrity that was quoted all of the place about trying to be fatter, then it would be the equivalent of Kelly Ripa and we could all be horrified together.

In my family we have both overweight and underweight people. Neither likes having it pointed out. However, the underweight people admit that they generally get envied, not harrassed.

:thumbsup2 And why do I feel as though you just "slagged" me?

it is VERY difficult to tell much about a person based on their size, other than the obvious (their size)
based on ones size, you really can't tell:
what their lipid panel is
what their fasting blood sugar is
what they do for a living
whether or not they wash properly
whether or not they eat healthy foods
what their level of activity is
whether or not they live a healthy life style in regards to smoking, drugs, drinking alcohol, etc
whether or not they contribute to society
whether or not they have high blood pressure
whether or not they have any chronic health issues
what their level of pain is
etc etc etc

size is definitely a touchy subject though. WOW!

oddly, i do not watch kellys show often because i am at work when it is on but i did see a few minutes of the show wednesday and did notice that she looked very thin that day. i tried to figure out if it was because she just looks that way compared to the new co host? maybe thats it?

Better yet.. why does anyone care...?

I mean it.. Why do you care what someone on TV weighs? There is NOTHING else in your life that you care about something so stupid as that..

Big, small etc, who really cares.. How does it impact you, sitting at home?

Does not...

Actually, I have not seen anyone on this thread be insulting to Kelly Ripa regarding her appearance. I find her annoying, so I don't watch her show, but I have seen her in real life, and she is very, very thin. If she is 5'3" as googled and she is under 100 lbs, then she is, probably, technically speaking, underweight. Again, I don't watch her show, but if it is true that she is talking about a need to lose weight, then I would think she has some body image issues.

I think the reason people have such an issue with people talking about overweight people is that "fat" is seeen as an insult. Thin is not only not insulting, it is desirable. It is not socially acceptable to be overweight. Not only is it socially acceptable to be thin, it is admirable.

It is also easier to hide an eating disorder in which you are underweight under the guise of being "healthy." "Yes, I only eat lettuce and carrot sticks because I am watching my cholesterol." "I exercise 6 hours a day because it is good for me." It is impossible to rationalize over eating or binge eating in the same way, particularly if you are overweight. There is no way to make people think it is a positive thing that you just ate a dozen donuts or a bucket of chicken.

I think body image has become so distorted. In the real world we look at people who are overweight as "normal," while in the media we look at average people as overweight and underweight people as "normal." It's no wonder we have such a distorted idea of the ideal.

Really? I would be insulted if the following was said about me:

That girl is too thin! You can just about see through her.

. I hate how boney her upper chest is

she really is too thin. Makes it seem like she has a huge head.

I call that the Lollipop syndrome. I see many women get so thin that they look like a lollipop.

She no longer looks healthy.

When did the OP say there is NOTHING else in their life to care about. You are so rude to call it stupid.

This is a discussion board. Celebrities are in the public eye and know full well that people discuss their appearance.

Kelly herself talks about her weight, how much she exercises, etc. I guess she has nothing else to think about.
