FYI, DISer's!!

THURSDAY, Jan. 15 (HealthDay News) -- Cereal giant Kellogg has asked stores to stop selling its popular Keebler and Austin brand peanut butter crackers, as health officials reported two more deaths in the nationwide salmonella outbreak that is linked to peanut butter.

Kellogg, of Battle Creek, Mich., said it hadn't received any complaints or discovered any problems with the crackers, but took the action as a "precautionary measure" after one of its peanut paste suppliers, Peanut Corp. of America, announced a nationwide recall of peanut butter made in a Georgia plant.

The company is "removing product from retail store shelves and encouraging customers and consumers to hold and not eat these products until regulatory officials complete their investigation of PCA," a news release on the Kellogg Co. Web site said late Wednesday.

"We are taking these voluntary actions out of an abundance of caution," CEO David Mackay said in the news release.

The crackers are Toasted Peanut Butter Sandwich Crackers, Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich Crackers, Cheese and Peanut Butter Sandwich Crackers, and Peanut Butter-Chocolate Sandwich Crackers.

I buy way tooooo many of these pb sandwich crackers and my DSon sent me this link from his office!!! :thumbsup2 I currently do not have any in the house!!! :goodvibes

I sent these to school with my DDs this morning as a snack. I called the school after I read the news and asked them to tell them not to eat them, and to eat the other snack I sent.

I know it seems over-the-top, but all I could think about was them getting sick when I knew in advance there could be a chance. I would never forgive myself.

ITA with you, Denae!!!!

What worries me is not grocery stores because they usually always are very aware of recalls....but those small convenience stores everywhere...they sell these in all and every variety...do these stores get notice? Do they pull them from their shelves?? :confused3

But as the article states it is just a precautionary measure. ::yes::

My grandkids love them. I almost bought a big box of the Austins from Sams Club 2 weeks ago. So glad I left them in the store.

I ate a package last night and sent a package with DH in his lunch today :scared1:

Thanks for the bump.

I had a pack and a half of the Cheese crackers with peanut butter in my cupboard that my youngest would eat for lunch.
Luckily he stopped eating them acouple of months ago, so they've just been sitting in the cupboard.

I played it safe and threw both packages out.

I'm glad the the Kellogg company did this even if it is precautionary. My aunt was hospitalized the week before Christmas with salmonella. They don't really know where she got it. She doesn't cook but buys her meals prepackaged from a meal delivery service and QVC. She also lives on peanut butter crackers. Having watched what she went through I'd throw them out before eating them.

THANK YOU for this post...DH takes 2-3 a day to work! I have 5, ye 5 paks in the pantry right now... as we get paid once a month, I stock up. Dang! Well, getting rid of them is WAY cheaper than the alternative!

Ugh. Thanks for posting this. I have two big cases (Costco size boxes) of them in the house right now. Grrrrrr.

If it helps...

It's totally precautionary and they're placing a hold on the products until the FDA completes the investigation of the plant (should be about a week.) I wouldn't freak out yet as nothing has been linked to these crackers to date. It's just that the problem that occured was with the peanut butter that was produced in this plant. Basically, the Kellogg Company (who owns Keebler & Austin) isn't taking any chances.

Also, it's not a recall (yet.) Basically the products are being held (say in the back of the store, etc.) and Kellogg's isn't shipping or making any more until the FDA clears it. If they don't clear it, I'm sure at that point they'll issue a recall. That's why it's all precautionary.

...going to go trash the Sams Club stash DH uses for his lunch now..

Crap. Good thing I grabbed him individual bags of trail mix for his lunch yesterday! :rotfl:

I don't know.... I have one of those huge boxes of those crackers. Sons eat a pack every day (at least). Half the package is already gone. Nobody's been sick yet... I seriously don't plan on throwing them away. :confused3
