Keeping unlimited on Verizon

I currently have unlimited data with Verizon. If I just never upgrade my phone with them any more and maybe just get them off of Ebay will I be able to keep my unlimited data package.

I heard about this too, it really gripes me...honestly I have never come close to going over the 2mb that they seem to be having nowadays. I was grandfathered into the unlimited, but I have an app that tells me how much of everything I used so I just watch for the sake of my own info.

In regards to your question, I do not know the answer....but I would like to know.

I don't know exactly how it is going to work with the iPhone 5. If you buy the phone off eBay or something (assuming it will be the 4g stuff) you can change plans and keep unlimited or if you get the phone anywhere the plan will force you into something limited.

I don't believe you can make any changes to your plan at all, but you can definitely purchase a new phone and still keep your unlimited data package. DH & I just got new phones in April and he had no problem getting his and keeping the unlimited data (we bought them at Best Buy).

I am guessing the iPhone 5 will require you to have the new plan. Which is pointless for those of us who do not have 4G coverage.

I'm somewhat smart phone inept (just got my first one in April :cool1:) but what is about the iphone5 that would make you need something different from the unlimited data package??

The next iPhone will very likely be 4G/LTE, whereas the current ones are 3G. This means Verizon (and probably other carriers) will make people change from their unlimited 3G data plans to use the 4G phone.

I switched from an android to an iPhone (purchased at a Verizon store) and got to keep my unlimited data plan. As long as you don't change your plan you should be fine.

Just talk to the people at Verizon when you go in and let them know what you want to do and they will give you suggestions on how to accomplish it.

This new issue was just announced and takes place this summer. This is not last years change.

Upgrade your phone and you lose unlimited data.

I wonder if you upgrade before the changes take place if you can keep unlimited

Ahh, so this is something they're changing this summer. I got it now.

Found an article about it: http://www.eweek.com/c/a/Mobile-and...nlimited-Plans-as-Carrier-Moves-to-4G-568051/

DH upgraded to a 4G Droid phone last month and I went from a basic phone to a 4G smart phone... DH was able to keep his unlimited data plan & I was actually given double the data for free (so 4 gig instead of 2 gig) if I picked a 4G phone rather than a 2G phone.

Looks like I won't be upgrading my phone ever again. And they won't be getting me to sign a new 2 year contract.

Do you realize how much you have to use your phone in order to hit the data limits? If you are just a casual user (i.e. not using it for business), you're not going to hit the minimum data limits. I'm a casual user and think I'm on my phone a lot and I never even get near 1 gig, let alone the 2 gig limit. I have unlimited, but my DH bought his iphone after unlimited went away and he was worried about data. That's when the salesperson told us it's hard to hit the limit for a personal user. At my max in the last six months, I hit 1.25gb and that was over Spring Break when I was using it all day long and had to use my trent to keep it charged during the day.

Should be interesting to see what they do with the new iphone and the 4g. They have 4g droids right now and they didn't change plans for them (beyond getting rid of unlimited). Hopefully they won't mess with it when they release the iphone.

I have Sprint and love the unlimited data, but I am wondering if they will ever do the same.

I have unlimited and regularly go over 1gb per month. I use my phone to look things up all the time. Its quicker than getting out my computer or tablet.

Also, I've read 4g phones use more data. Mine isn't 4g so I don't know how true that is.

hmmmm I have a 4G/LTE phone with unlimited data......I HATE my phone, I want to upgrade as soon as I can because my phone sucks....I want to go back to a Motorola Droid. Since I already have a 4G/LTE and have unlimited data I wonder how this change will affect me. I won't get an iPhone unless something major changes my mind.....

4G phones use more data only if you do more browsing or media streaming. Some video streaming sites will check your connection speed and increase/decrease nitrate based on that.

It depends upon how you use your phone. If you are just surfing the web, checking e-mail, etc. it's not a problem. But if you use your phone to stream Pandora, and/or videos it's a big problem! I have gone over 4g's in a month on several occasions (it's not that hard). For example, I found these figures on another website for streaming Netflix.

"Netflix Movies (HD): These guys are around 3.8Mbit, which means it's about 3600MB for a 2 hour HD movie.
Netflix Movies (SD): Each of these movies are around 500-700MB each, depending on the length of the movie.
Netflix TV Shows (HD): A 30-minute TV show will be about 1500MB.
Netflix TV Shows (SD): A 30-minute TV show will be about 400MB."

As you can see, two 30 minute TV shows in HD will easily put you over the 2GB cap. This will limit the functionality of my smart phone (cripple). In fact, if I lived in an area that was served by other carriers, I would be gone in a heartbeat.

Personally, I think that $30 per month per person in a family plus $30 a month per phone to tether (if you do what Verizon wants) is a big ripoff to begin with, then limiting the data to only 2g's a month is just outrageous! :sad2:

Ah. I only stream when I can get wifi. I don't even try on Verizon. That would make a difference.

Just like the newest IPad, the new 4G are data hogs. People with the new IPad are going through their data with nothing more than a 2 hour movie. And the kicker is Verizon is going to start only offering smart phones that run on 4G.

I read that shortly after the last iPhones came out, a man streamed a game. By the time the game was over, he was 1/2 way through his monthly data allowance.
