Katrina & Sandy

Two convoys of Green Mountain Power trucks left Vermont yesterday to help restore power in Connecticut. The catering company a block away from me is going to Staten Island to help feed utility workers there. The "I Am Vermont Strong" campaign which raised funds to help Hurricane Irene victims is considering another fundraising drive to help Sandy victims. Help is on its way from Vermont.

I heard on the radio that Michigan is sending trucks with supplies. Said where to go to if anyone wanted to donate a case of water.

My parents were w/out electricity landline phones, internet, etc. for almost 2 weeks after Hurricane Issac. The stayed with us because we had a generator. It was late August and as hot as Hades in south Louisiana. My cousin and other Entergy workers left the other day bound for Sandy hit areas. My prayers and thoughts are with you all.

Our area sent up guys from the power company to help. The donation trucks are supposed to be going out early next week, according to the news.

A friend of mine called and told me her DH and others were turned away because they are NON-UNION! Are you kidding me? You guys need to complain! Hopefully, they will fix this issue and accept the help. That is just horrible to turn away help due to not being in a union. I just added another reason why I can't stand unions.

Yet just another reason to aid in the case for all states to be right to work. :(

Some crews are staying and waiting for someone to change their mind about the non-union folks; others are on their way home after they were turned away. You guys need to let the local government and energy companies have it! I'm mad and I'm not even up there. What a waste of time and gas for those guys if they can't work!

Yep, saw the headlines this morning. The crews are from Alabama. :confused3

I'm in Horsham, PA.

Sitting at an intersection this morning, 5 huge power trucks from PIKE Electric in North Carolina went by!! :cool1: (I had to look up the name PIKE when I got to work - didn't know where they were from.)

Just up the road from me (in Bucks County) they still have a LOT of people out of power. I almost honked and waved at these trucks as they went by so as to thank them!!

I hope they will be allowed to help. Pike is non-union and right now they only want unions to help!

I was coming here to post about the non-union workers being turned away.

What jerks. I hope those who are suffering because of this take note later on and do something about removing whoever these decision makers are.

To me, this sounds like a big Katrina mess all over again: Local/state/federal gov't. not working together, people not leaving ahead of the storm, those staying not being prepared to stay it out.
I think if that same storm had happened on the Gulf Coast, that it would not have been so devastating. For one, we are not as densely populated, we've been through these before, and I know that Katrina taught me a lot about being prepared.

I've been seeing on the news all day about the long gas lines, that still happens everytime here and is expected.

I have been thinking the same thing. Just didn't want to say it.

This has taught me that people just don't learn when it happens to other people. They have to experience it first hand.

I am in no way trying to minimize others hardships but there are so many things I have heard this time that I hear every storm
Storm surge-we never had water here before.
Help isn't here and it's day 3 after the event
We are forgotten
We can't get gas
I have never seen such devastation
Never thought this would happen to me or this area

In fact, I learned after Katrina of things that had been rebuilt or done after Camillle (I was 9 months old when Camille hit) that I was angry at our local people for rebuilding and thinking it couldn't happen again. Many, many lessons learned in Katrina and lots of building codes, etc. have changed now. Because we now know to expect the unexpected.

That is beyond ridiculous! When I called pse&g to report our power issue (we have 2 lines running to our house, only one is giving power) they said I would get a return call by Nov 9th. That's only a call to see what the issue is, not for them to come out. We are lucky and thankful it's not a big deal and we can function by running extension cords all over. Anyone who knows what they are doing should be allowed to help!

I want to say a big thank you to all of your states that sent workers here to help! I have seen trucks from NC, Iowa, Ill. and GA here on the south shore of LI and we do appriciate what is being done. People are pretty much staying patient but it is supposed to get down to the 30's tonight and people will be cold so I imagine the patience will be stretched as it gets colder. We were told to expect power by Nov. 10th or 11th. Like the south we're tough and will get through this. Be safe everyone.

Right. I've moved further north now, but still went through the April 2011 tornadoes in northern Alabama and the aftermath of that felt like a big hurricane. But, I don't remember anyone being so upset. We were all just trying to help one another and thankful we were alive.
The absolute biggest thing Katrina taught me was that you are on your own. I am solely responsible for the wellbeing of my kids along with DH for food/water/shelter in the first few days.

I really tried not to use gas after the tornadoes/hurricane. I had to go to work (nurse), but otherwise we stayed home.

I was thinking the same thing! I am thankful that I live in Florida and we have a local and state government that know how to work with everyone!

Workers turned away as well as NYC preparing for a big marathon this weekend were the big headlines this morning in my city 900 miles away. :confused3
WTH is going on there?

This really confuses me and burns me up! Why turn away workers?! Not only that, the union workers don't want the help from the non-unions! Also, the mayor of NYC is an idiot! Those generators could go to gas stations, traffic lights, shelters .... to get the people back to some sort of normal.

I have been thinking the same thing. Just didn't want to say it.

This has taught me that people just don't learn when it happens to other people. They have to experience it first hand.

I remember when one of my co-workers told their client, "no need to prepare for the hurricane. The government will come in right away and give you everything you need!." I went to my co-worker and argued with her about her comment and told her she was wrong.

Anyway, gas shortages and lines are normal for weeks after a hurricane. If people don't top off their gas tanks it will get back to normal faster.

That's the spirit that's gotten me through a few storms. It is HARD to live without the power, running water, easy access to food that we have gotten so used to, and I'm so sorry that you all are having to go through this. After Katrina, I went about 2 weeks without power, but it was summer and the heat is much more tolerable than the cold.

Is there a shelter available to go to. Even when I didn't have power, I volunteered at a shelter and they at least had a hot meal everyday along with warmth. The meal for lunch one day was simply a small McDonald's hamburger and small fry for each person, but it was better than a can of cold soup.

Stay safe and hopefully the power will be back on before projected.
