A Silent Scientologist Birth for TomKitten?
Scientologists Believe Silent Birth Reduces Fear Later in Life

Oct. 13, 2005 — When Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes announced they were expecting a child, speculation about the birth started immediately.

The couple practices Scientology, where mothers are encouraged to perform silent birth. That means no yelling or talking during the delivery and doctors are asked to remain quiet as well. It is believed the quiet birth reduces trauma during delivery and therefore prevents irrational fears later in life.

Actress Kelly Preston, wife of John Travolta, delivered her daughter in a silent birth without painkillers and admitted to Redbook magazine that it wasn't easy.

"It got hardcore at the end because she was so big," Preston said. "I changed my mind and said, 'Throw me in the car! I want an epidural!"

Preston was too far along and had to give birth at home. The church doesn't exclusively ban painkillers, but many mothers refrain from using them.

Fellow Scientologist Brittany Wadhams refused painkillers and tried her best to stay quiet.

"About a half hour before pushing, that's when it got more difficult, and that was when I would have a contraction and then I would start screaming," Wadhams said.

A doctor who has attended silent births says medically there's nothing wrong with the practice, but adhering to it might be impossible.

"For many women, I think that it would be difficult to maintain complete silence during delivery," Dr. Thomas Murphy Goodwin told "Good Morning America." "It can be extremely uncomfortable physically and there can be an emotional component that it would make it hard to be totally silent."

Officials at the Church of Scientology say silent birth is practiced at the discretion of the parents and their doctor.

Former Scientologist Lawrence Woodcraft said he felt awkward asking doctors to go along with a silent birth when his daughter was born using the method.

"To me it was very strange and embarrassing, particularly asking the medical staff and doctors to be quiet," Woodcraft said. "They're like, 'Well, we have to do our job.' So that was stressful and difficult."

Some Scientologists say the church has recommended counseling known as "auditing" for mothers who were unable to stay silent.

"My goal was to do it as best as I could and know that what I believed in I tried to follow as close as possible," Wadhams said.

Cruise and Holmes have not announced whether their child's birth will be silent.

It's official...I no longer want to hear anything about TomKat any more. I am more over them than I was Britney.

I am all for home birth, but I could never do it silently. I let my body and instincts take over and being silent is not what I wanted to do!

IIRC (from reading Dianetics years ago) this is because they believe that the infant will have issues due to what they hear, but cannot reason. I think they also mention pregnant women being careful not to say things about the baby in negative tones, or the child may feel insecure later. I recall there being examples like the mother saying "I can't wait to get this baby out of me" and the adult later having hurt feelings and insecurities that stem back to that.

Where is that rolleyes smilie? ;)

Let's see, no meds and no screaming. I just don't see it happening. I bet Mr. Cruise couldn't even pass a kidney stone quietly.

Well, not only that, but apparently the infant is not supposed to have medical intervention or tests, and nobody is allowed to speak to the baby for seven days.

Something about the birth being traumatic enough?

In any event, it gets a giant WHATEVER from me.

If the baby can't reason, then how does it know you are speaking negatively about him/her? You could be speaking negatively about the moo shoo pork you had last night for all the baby knows.

Here's a bunch of     for you.

How many millions of people have been born naturally (meaning - if the mother wants to scream, she does) and we're not all that messed up? Where do these "religions" get these philosophies? Does Scientology point to the Bible to justify everything too? (I admit - I know NOTHING about Scientology - & I'm not all that interested in researching it either!)

I wish they would have a silent pregnancy!!! :rotfl:

No, really, I have always liked Katie Holmes. She is very attractive and seems (seemed?) to be a nice girl.

But sometimes I think the media goes a little overboard on their coverage.

I wonder what the auditing is of the mothers who couldnt stay quiet during the whole birth is? Kind of scary sounding if you ask me.

:rolleyes2 :rolleyes2 Does anyone else wonder how she could just go along with all this new "scientology stuff" so quickly? Her family are devout Catholics and very conservative. (I know someone who knows her parents really well) They must hate all this.
She just seems brainwashed. I read online somewhere that she was picked to provide Tom with a child. that is sure how it looks.
She is swept off her feet and he is breeding. so fast.....

Any woman who has given birth knows there comes a point where you have pretty much no control what comes out of your mouth. ;)

I can honestly say I have never met a single person who was traumatized by hearing people talk while they were being born. :confused3

Basically they described it as they couldn't reason it correctly, but it leaves an imprint and causes later confusion. So yes, they do describe examples like yours, that is why they think it is best to err on the side of caution...being silent.
