Katie Holmes to have a "silent birth"?

silent birth - isn't that an oxymoron? IMHO, tom cruise is 1/2 of that phrase (a moron). :crazy2:

well, she'd better hope she has a small baby! My first was 9lbs 7 oz and had a huge head--it was not a silent birth. :goodvibes

Isn't there something about the pregnancy too? I read something about how the mother can't say "sorry" because the baby will grow up to think it's a sorry child. We had a running joke about rude people after that and said they were all just pregnant Scientologists.

You guys are cracking me up!

Maybe that's what DD's separation anxiety is all about. Emily must have heard me telling (maybe yelling) at DH to get this baby out of me!

Oh, I get it now. All my problems, all my life, are because the doctor said to my mother "you have a beautiful baby girl".

Yeah, it all makes sense to me now!

I would totally agree to a silent birth! If he could also stay quiet while I used his baby makers as stress relief!

And what the heck is this "auditing" for those who make noise? THAT sounds creepy.

It brings to mind an IRS audit. Scary sounding.

Does anyone else think this sounds like it was thought up by a man? Sure, you ought to be able to push an 8 lb kid out without making a peep. No problem.

Men...what will they think of next

I think not talking to a baby for 7 days is the most cruel out of it all!

Me too.

I think the whole thing is moronic. No wonder Tom Cruise embraces it.

Just thought I'd provide a link to the "No speaking to the baby for 7 days" thing:

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/9620245/

Notably:

"The doctrine also states that newborns cannot be poked or prodded for medical tests or even spoken to for the first seven days of their lives, believing that babies go through so much pain during the birth, they shouldn't have to experience any further discomfort or sensory experience that could return later in life to haunt them. "

Oh that is a good one! If your child has a life threatening illness that can be detected at birth by the tests they run - that is too much for the baby.

Ya, way better to have a deathly ill child than one that got a heel prick when they were born!

Maybe he just jumped so hard on the couch that his boys just flew out and landed on her...

eta: that was sorta crude...sorry...

OMG I can't stop laughing. So glad I wasn't drinking anything. That was too funny.

So where do they keep this baby for 7 days where it hears no voices? They obviously know the baby hears before birth, since you can't insult the baby in utero, since it will 'remember', but why no talking after? You should tell him/her where they are and what happened to them, since they will remember this too, I presume...

Hey, it all sounds perfectly sane to me.... ;)

And what happens on the 8th day - they all jump out and yell "SURPRISE"!

Should there be threads going on about the "wacky" practices of other religions too. :rolleyes1

Of course. Can't discriminate, right? ;)

Scientology is new to most of the world right now (thanks Tommy! ), so that's why it's getting a lot of attention. Although, if I was to just learn about Christianity for the first time, I'm sure I'd have some interesting comments on the whole "virgin birth" thing.

But that is for another thread. :teeth:

It is believed the quiet birth reduces trauma during delivery and therefore prevents irrational fears later in life.

I find it ironic that Scientologist have come up with an utterly irrational idea to prevent irrational fears.

I did not scream when I gave birth, but I did vocalize. And remaining silent for an entire week afterwards is not just ridiculous, it's outright stupid.

Sorry cardaway, I think Scientology is a bizarre and freakish cult, and deserves zero respect and I feel no compunction about criticizing them.

I would speak as freely about any other "religion" and take whatever lumps result.

No religion should be above criticism; God gave us rational minds for a reason, and I believe one of those reasons is to separate truth from utter insanity.

I read that babies can recognize their mothers voice after they are born, because they heard it in the womb. I remember when both my girls were babies, that they would be fussy, and others would try to soothe them. Nothing worked until I talked to them. They would calm down on the spot. I would think not allowing it to hear it's mother's voice after coming out into a new, cold world would be cruel.

BTW....I was born in 1966 and my mother was knocked out cold. Talk about a silent birth. Why don't I have my $#*!! together????

My first daughter used to calm down when the music for One Life To Live came on. That was my naptime when I was pregnant with her!

That is one of the silliest things I have ever heard!
I did have my first daughter naturally with no pain medicine and I did not scream - but I sure did talk to her within the first 7 days! That just seems cruel to not do that!
I am due in February and will talk or make whatever noises I want to during labor and 7 days after!...so I guess our baby will be traumatized by our talking to her!
