DW and I attended a DVC presentation last Friday while at the World at SSR. Of course we are very tempted to join so I came here to get some more info. What I have not seen are any threads in regards to people using their points at other resorts offered other than Disney Vacation Resorts.

Our question is what are some of your experiences at other resorts offered (the World Passport properties in particular). Is it worth considering vacationing at these for our non-Disney year trips..or is the best value using the points at Disney?? Are these properties on par with Disney Vacation Club resorts??

Thanks in advance for any insight you can provide!!

many will add their thoughts, and I am sure there are several threads that speak to this. But my quick math (I bought last spring) basically indicated that it was the equivalent to "rack rate."

if you do any basic shopping you can get a cheaper deal, but then you need to place a price on convenience and the sunk cost of the maint. fees.

do a simple test...
1) look at the amount of points required to stay in Maui (or any other location)
2) look up/ call a travel agent, and see how much the "cash" rate is

another easy test I did... check the Disney Cruise price (cash vs. points).

there are many variations, perspectives, etc...

i decided to buy based on my disney needs, any other trips with points is a bonus... but i plan to do those with cash.

good luck.

If the points are going to be wasted, might as well use them on something. We use ours for DVC, but we did use points for the 4 night cruise several years ago. We looking at the 7 night cruise now, but we are paying cash; it uses too many points and then we are left with none for any other vacation.

We did buy fire sale points from another member in 2005 that were Disney Collection points and we used them at the Contemporary, plus added two nights cash.

Unless you have more points than you know what to do with, I think the general consensus is to try and use your points for WDW exclusively...as that's where you get the biggest bang for the buck. However, there have been many members that have used their points for Disney Cruise, Adventures by Disney, etc. (as well as the non-Disney resorts offered) and have been extremely pleased. It really just depends on each individual member's circumstances. I personally would either work a direct trade with someone that owns at a resort I'm interested in, or rent enough points out to cover the cost vs. using my points at a premium for a non-DVC resort.

Your best value is for DVC resorts, but if you have points, the convenience factor for other resorts is worth something. It is just not a "great deal".

I haven't done this myself or even done the math, but something else you might consider is renting your points and using the cash to pay for the other vacation. The $2400 you get from renting 200 points at $12/point might go farther than the points alone.

The way I look at it is that you own the points...yes your best value is at a DVC resort but trading into the World Passport II doesn't seem to be that bad of a deal or am I missing something? For 270 points, peak season, you can get a weeks stay in a 2 bedroom somewhere...maybe Key West. Not sure if the points requirement is correct I don't have my book with me.....and I don't believe that 270 points per person. The other collections, like the Adventure seem to be very high point wise...here I would consider cash.....Club Cordial seems fare, the Disney collection seems high. What is everyone elses view on the collections offered????
