just took gun safety class

I have taken a few gun classes and have my concealed carry permit. DH and I belong to a gun club and go shooting regularly. We have guns in our home in various locations. DDs have been trained in how to shoot them as well. I think it important to be familiar and ready to protect if necessary.

Taurus Judge...nice gun but my only issue with it is its name. Heaven forbid you have to use it in true self defense you can hear the criminal's attorneys already chirping about the mental state you must've been in and what made you decide to purchase a weapon with the name like "The Judge" and does that make you the jury and executioner too....just not worth the potential aggravation and accusatory nonsense you'd deal with in an unfortunate situation of having to use it. I'll stick with my Kimber .45 Custom TLE/RL II. :cool1:

DH has the Taurus Judge and it did a good job of killing a snake in the garage last year. No idea what kind it was and it was in a spot that you couldn't kill it with anything else.

I'm confused because you said it's required to take the class to get a handgun permit, but you've already had the gun for many years and you just took the class? (Maybe you got it when you lived in another state or something?) Or had you taken the class already and just took this one as a refresher or something? I have no idea how any of this works, lol

I need to clarify. The class is required for a concealed weapon permit. I have a permit to own the gun. My gun is legal at my house. Now I can carry it in my purse legally

Good for you! I'm against guns in civilian households but whole heartadly suppot gun education! It makes you respect weapons more and, if you have to own a gun, it makes it all the safer :)

I have a big ole truck with big fat tires and an NRA sticker on the window. That right there is enough to deter any intruder from coming up the driveway.

:thumbsup2

My BIL has 2 signs in his living room window. One says "Caution burgulars. We have guns & know how to use them." The other says "Trespassers will be shot. Survivors will be shot again." My favorite one is "Our house is protected by the Good Lord & a gun. You will need them both if you break in here."

Thanks for the information! Very interesting! (I told you I don't know anything about this-we have never had a gun and I don't know anyone other than law enforcement who has a gun in the house. :))

Love it! My DH has the same except here in the land of a million specialty license plates(aka Mississippi) we also have a NRA plate. He's got one of those too!

I own a "Judge" I love it, I don't believe all that talk about it not having enough stopping power, simply put your not going to be using it at a distance. I've shot enough stuff with it to know that it can penetrate enough to kill, I shoot "personal defense" load.

If you are asleep when an intruder enters, you will not be very alert when aiming, the "Judge" solves the problem of aiming, and in the length of a room I have no doubts that it will be effective.

Congradulations and good shooting.

Paul

:thumbsup2 I agree with your thoughts on guns in civilian homes. Gun safety education is a must and I applaud those that take the course.
But I didn't realise that robberies/home invasions were so rampant in the U.S. that people feel the need to 'protect their home' by owning a gun.

Yes, I'm in Canada and our gun laws are different than the U.S. I just know that I would be extremely uncomfortable knowing my neighbour had a gun in their home.

You don't have hunters in Canada :confused3

OMGosh I can't imagine living without several guns in my home. About a mile from my house, 2 of my best friends boyhood home, their elderly father lived there, just about a year ago was shot and killed right in his house by 4 little juvenile thugs. Where on earth do you live where you never have home invasion/ murders. I thought that happened everywhere? :confused3It certainly happens here and I live in a pretty small town. That kind of thing can happen anywhere, even some rural place, because sometimes robbers will target these types of homes, knowing they will be unprepared or the police isn't really around or close.

Would probably :scared1: someone pretty good having that go off in your house, but so does the unmistakable loading of a pump gun :goodvibes

Now, if someone who doesn't want an actual gun in the house could just get a recording of that to be played in the dark when needed... :thumbsup2

The Judge is and would not be my choice of weapon for home defense. While it shoots both .410 shotgun shells and I think .45 pistol ammo, I don't want to be using it if someone comes into my house. For at home I have a Remington 870 pump shotgun with an 18" barrel. Just racking the pump and putting a shell in the chamber is a distinctive enough sound to make any intruder think twice before proceeding. Also I can use a lighter load than buckshot and still have extremely good knockdown force since no shot taken would be more than 10 to 15 yards.

Realistically I think everyone should take a gun saftey class and at least be familiar with guns. Even if you refuse to participate in the actual shooting portion of the class I think that there would be extreme benifits for all.

7 shot 20-gauge pump in bedroom closet, Ruger LCR in nightstand on wifes side, and Springfield Armory XD-M 9mm in belt holster for concealed carry. Carry a concealed weapon legally is a good idea if your properly trained. Just ask the guy who tried to hold me up at knife point pumping gas late one night last year.

We qualified with 22 cal semi-autos, but got the chance to fire other weapons. I loved the Taurus Judge!! I would feel totally safe with that weapon defending my house. Just shoot in the burgular's direction & he will be hit!!

The judge is not a very capable defensive weapon.

You can't leave us hanging like that, what happened?????

From what I've read, the personal defense load gives you a pattern of about three inches at 30 feet and about an inch and a half at ten feet. As such, you will need to do just as much aiming with this weapon as with any other handgun.

Combine this with the lack of penetrating power and I think that I'll stick with my easily concealable .380 and GoldDots.

The PD load is somewhat unique in that it combines 2 sizes of projectile, the 4 buckshot pellets will penetrate 3/4" plywood at 20' with at least a 2-3' spread from my experience. then you still have the other BB pellets that spread even farther. like I said i don't believe those supposed tests. Now don't get me wrong I know it's not going to penetrate like a 357 magnum, but it would still get the job done. I carry it all the time when I am out in the woods working on/or around my goat pen.

for concealment I agree with you, I carry a Ruger 380 LCP
