Just signed up for Everest!

Not sure if the link will work but someone photographed DD and her friend climbing over the nets during the race in their matching tie dye shirts. Easy, cheap and fun.

Great pic!!! Love it! Those are Mickey-head tie dyes too right? They look great. Maybe I'll make some for DS and I. I'm going to wait until he knows we're going and we can decide together what we want to wear.

This is my own thread, and I haven't checked it in a while! Weird I wasn't getting emails ... :confused3

My son will be 16. He turns 16 3 weeks from yesterday while we are on our family trip to WDW. :cloud9: As part of his bday present I am going to put together an 'announcement' that he and I are going down for Everest. :yay: We had talked about doing it so I know he really wanted to, but I had told him awhile ago that we might not be able to afford to (which was real, but DH and I have decided that DS and I can do it). I am SO looking forward to this special 1x1 time with him.

LOVE the idea of matching tees. We usually do them for our family trips. As a matter of fact I spend a fair amount of my day yesterday doing Mickey Tie Dyes for my family. I had wondered about making them for the race. I wasn't sure if we would want to wear the ones we get at Packet Pick Up?

SO happy to hear from so many people doing it and those who have done it and loved it! I am really nervous about not keeping up the pace. I don't know why - so far in my training I have been well under the 16 min/mile. I just really want to do this and get our medals!!

Cool!! My DS is 14, will be 15 in July. I'm looking forward to spending time with DS too. we don't get to much time to hang out with school and siblings.

I'm nervous about keeping pace too. I've been running but I'm at about a 18-20 minute mile at this point. As soon as it gets warmer DS and I are going to start running together, I'm sure my pace will pick up to meet his. I just have this awful fear of getting swept! LOL

That is a really cool memento and they look like they are having a lot of fun!

Are you running a whole 5K at this point? I am still doing C25K so am doing walk/run intervals. I did 5K in about 38 min last time. Of course with the horrible weather and other issues, I haven't been to the gym in about a week. :headache: I just keep reminding myself that we have plenty of time. :hippie:

I'm still running/walking with C25K. I got sidelined with plantar fasciitis and my Dr had me stop running for a month. A month turned into 2, but now my new podiatrist said I could run while working on my treatment plan.
I started C25K over a few weeks ago, it's been slow going but I'm getting better and faster.
I figure it will be about 50 days til the race when I finish C25K, hopefully it will be warm enough by then to start running outside so I can get used to pavement running.

i chronically have plantar fasiciatis...what kind of treatment plan are you on? my doc did the cortisone shot to the foot (can you say owwwwww). He didn't give me a real plan...just stretch it out. it still bothers me from time to time and i'm hoping it doens't get in the way of my running/walking.

I won't do the cortisone injections so he's got me wearing special inserts for my shoes but they are kinda painful, not sure how long that can last. Then the boot for 6 weeks if the inserts don't work. My mom only wore the boot at night but this Dr prefers as much as possible.

He said that over stretching can be really bad too, so be careful. He said the stair drop is not the best way to stretch the muscle because it can stretch to far.
I have a frozen water bottle that I roll my foot over 2x a day and a tennis ball that I roll my foot over as well.

I see him again in 3 weeks for a follow up. I think I'm going to have to make an appt for the boot.

Surprisingly it doesn't hurt when I run, my shins are bothering me right now but only when I walk, the pain goes away when I run. Mostly my heel hurts when I'm standing like today. I'm in my scrap room right now and it's really starting to bother me. I need a foam mat or something to stand on.

The shot helped immensely, but you can't have the shot very often. My doc said like 2-3 in my lifetime. so i found my own way to fix it....i wear heels now. :-) doesn't hurt me at all. so i worry about running, since i obviously don't run in heels. i also have shin splits. i read an article on here about an exercise to do to help with that, so i'm going to try that.

The problem with cortisone is it never leaves the body.

Yeah I found heels help my feet too but I can't wear them chasing after the kids, I am not Victoria Beckham! LOL

I'll have to see if I can rustle up that article on shin splints. They've never really bothered me before.

I feel your pain with plantar fasciitis. I had it during and after my pregnancies. It is so painful. Knock on wood, my feet are pretty good now. I have a tendency to get shin splints too. This time I am taking the C25K really slowly ... I repeated week 2 and 3 twice. So far, it has helped and I haven't had trouble with my feet or shins.

DH and I signed up for this race a few days ago! This is my first ever race and I've been training for it for a month now and didn't even realize it. We are DVC members and had reserved OKW for 8 nights in May. Then DH said that he would rather stay at AKV. So I moved the reservation over to there. Then I found news about the race on another site. I was extremely interested because I just started running on my treadmill about a month ago. So we decided to go for it. I just checked out the C25K program that you all mentioned. And come to find out I am right at the 5 week level. I can walk 5 minutes and run 10 for three rounds. So I am thrilled. But I am really nervous about moving to the outdoors and hitting the sidewalk. I've been told it is a lot tougher. Any hints?

Hi Eva! I saw you over on the other thread (the 2011 thread) above my post. :goodvibes

I am super impressed that you are running for 10 min! I did 4 the other day and was thrilled! :rotfl:

I don't have much input on running on the road, DS and I do trails since he knows all the good spots for Cross Country. I guess the biggest thing would be making sure you have the right kind of shoes. I bought street running shoes for the treadmill and I'm looking at a different pair for trails.

congrats on the week 5 level!!!! I'm hoping to be there soon.

Sandy, I've heard a lot of people say the repeat week 3. I'm almost there but I think I'm going to repeat week 2 because I've been sick. the kids brought home the stomach bug, it's just whipped me out.

finally all registered. It took forever to come up with a team name! DS is soooo indecisive! LOL
Next I need to get a room and DS's park ticket.

Congrats to you too! Just getting over a couple minutes was tough for me.

Well, I don't run so fast. Right now I am running at about 4.6 mph and then walking at 3.8 mph. DH and I are running as a team. So I am afraid that I am going to hold him back. He says I will set the pace. But I keep having these nightmares of a man in a golf cart coming up to me during the race and saying that I am TOO SLOW! Will they pull you off the course if you walk occasionally? :snail:

Thanks! It is surprising, once you get to running 5 minutes straight it seems to get a bit easier to add a minute here and there. So you will be there before you know it. Not long before I have to run a couple miles straight. That has me nervous!

I think Buffy and I have both mentioned the same fear - getting pulled off the course! :scared1: I read that you have to keep a 16 min/mile pace. I have been assuming that you can run/walk as long as you keep that pace. I am hoping someone who has done one of these races can tell us for sure?? On the treadmill I run 6.0/6.5 and walk around 3.6. Then I do intervals of walking and then running for 1 minute at 7.0/7.5/8.0 until I get to at least 3.1 miles.

That is great to hear! Last night I started week 4, which I was VERY nervous about . It includes running 3 min and 5 min. It wasn't pretty but I DID IT!!!! It's really encouraging to hear you say that adding minutes seems easier after getting to 5.

I

Sandy, I've heard a lot of people say the repeat week 3. I'm almost there but I think I'm going to repeat week 2 because I've been sick. the kids brought home the stomach bug, it's just whipped me out.

Buffy - I highly recommend repeating week 2 and week 3. It has made a HUGE difference this time around. One thing I have done on the second week through is add another iteration of the cycle. So for week 3, I think you do run 90sec, walk 90 sec, run 3 min, walk 3 min and then repeat that. So the second time through I did it 3 times instead of 2. Also as I mentioned above, I do some iterations of walking and then running faster than normal for 1-1.5 minutes.

Hope you feel better!!

Thanks for the input Sandy!
I'm actually headed down to hit the treadmill now to do a week 2, we'll see how it goes!

And yes, I am so worried about being swept but I really think the only thing I'm going to get swept up in is the atmosphere of the race. I think the people and the adrenaline will really help ramp up my speed.

well I got through week 2/day 1. It was uuugly but I did it. I am definitely still feeling the effects of being sick. I will most likely do week 2 again. DH came down to see me run, that was weird, I'm not a big fan of people watching me work out. LOL But talking to him while doing my last run got me through it because I so wanted to stop!

I think I need to buy a new treadmill though, I've had this one for about 14 years so it's time. the belt is starting to separate at the seam on the underside. I'm going to call pro-form and see if I can get the belt replaced or if I should just get a new one.

Im not sure If anyone can help me but I thought I read somewhere that when you sign up for the Everest Challenge you get a one day ticket to check out the park prior to the race???
