I just got back from my first DL trip (2/8-2/11), which was also a Solo Trip. My DH took 3 days off work so I could travel on my own. I've been to WDW many times so I'll just report the details I think would be helpful for other first timers. I'm about 5 months pregnant so I was a bit picky with what I rode. My OB said that theme park warnings were baloney and the amount of impact in the average ride was negligible but I skipped all of the coasters and Indiana Jones. The weather was quite cool!
I flew in to John Wayne airport; very nice and it was only a 15 minute trip to the hotel. I stayed at the Camelot Inn and Suites. The hotel is not fancy on the outside but it was right across the street (5 minute walk to front gate). The staff was very friendly and the room was immaculate. I hit CA at midday Thursday, as soon as I arrived. I walked on to everything, even Soarin', without a wait. Thursday night and Friday I went to DL. I waited 0-10 minutes for all attractions until about 4 pm when an influx of people arrived. Saturday was very busy. I got the impression that many people were locals. Loved the chicken dinner at the Plaza Inn; the child size dinner is a good bargain!
Overall, my impression of the whole park is that it is so much more....manageable than WDW. Although I saw some cranky kids, I didn't see the typical WDW family meltdown with the parents pushing to do more, more, more because of the distance and expense of the trip and the kids being completely overwhelmed. If I make another trip when DD is a little older, I would consider DL before WDW.
Overall....two thumbs up!
