We just returned from Orlando where we stayed at Contry Inn and Suites at the Calypso Cay resort .. After months of trying to figure out the best choice versus cost, I finally settled on this hotel and I am so glad that I did. We paid $64 for the first 2 nights and $54 for the following 5.

We stayed in a King suite. My two children slept in the sofa sleeper in the living room which was adequate for them. Now
we've stayed in "suites" before so let me just forewarn you, this not a true suite but rather two rooms with very short passage way between them. The passage way has a door to the left for the bathroom and a counter with fridge and microwave on the right. However, there is a separate door to the bedroom. As another person mentioned, you really can't have both doors opened simultaneously because of how the doors are situated.

Another person who stayed there also mentioned that drawer and closet space was limited. The bedroom does have a small chest of drawers as does the living room. There is a small opened closet space just passed the counter where the microwave and fridge are. Again its small, but adeqequate. Trust me, my wife takes tons of clothes for the kids and we had more than enough space.

The advantage to having two separate rooms with two TV's is obvious. The kids have there own space, small mind you .. but it's theirs. I don't like the feeling of being in one large room. I will always opt for a "suite" type room of I can manage. What I liked about this arrangement was it afforded us the space without a kitchen area which for us is a waste. Virtually every suite type accomodation I looked for in Orlando / Kissimee offered that.

All king suites face the pool and those rooms that do not are fine too. The hotel is set back off the main road so there is virtually no
road noise in any of the rooms. Someone mentioned something about an RV park. Well let me assure you that it is a fair distance away on Ponciana. When you're on the property all you can see are the hotels and the townhoues that are part of Calypso Cay.
The property is very colorful.. very pleasing.

There are three pools that are located in the center the three main buildings those being Country Inn, Amerisuites and RunawayBay Apts. The pools are no terribly large but again, very adequate. I can say that we used them in the morning, afternoon and in the evenings (opened till 11 PM). There was never a time where the pool was crowded. There is a "refreshment" bungalo near the pools but it wasn't opened yet while we were there

They serve continental breakfast every morning (6:30 - 9:30 WD and 7:30 - 10:30 WE). It's your typical breakfast including cereals, toast, bagels, french toast, waffles, donuts, danish ..etc .
Not the most healthy of choices, but it's filling and free. If you miss breakfast at CI&S, you can walk over to Amerisuites. Breakfast there is from 7:00 to 11:00 daily and it's the same choices. It's a very short walk between hotels.

Someone else also mentioned about the sales people at breakfast. Yes, we say them giving their talk every single day.
I'm not sure, but I think the Calypso Cay may give away passes to Sea World or something in order to endure a 90 min sales pitch. Let me say that at NO TIME were we ever approached.
To be honest I was tempted to find out more about the time share there, but were were booked solid for the week and really didn't have the luxury.

Now for the downside ..

I suppose the only bad thing I can say about the property is where it's located. it's off of 192 (Bronson Hghy), which is great if you want gocery stores, restaurants and gift shops.. but it's not International Drive which we discovered going back to the airport as we we heading home. Also, we spent most of out time at Unversal / IOA .. so it was a bit of a drive .. Not terribly far, but a bit. We only spent one day at Magic Kingdom. I have plenty to say about our visits to the parks, but I'll post that somewhere else. Let me just say here and now that I surely hope the other Disney parks offer something comparable to Universal and IOA. I thought Magic Kingdom was well ... rather disapointing. Visually, I liked Main St and the Castle, but other than that.. I though at almost $200 for 4 people for one day was ..well I felt ripped off.
But again, it was our choice to visit just the one park for 1 day as we had puschased a 5 day pass for Universal / IOA.

In closing, for anyone who chosses Country Inn and Suites, I think you'll really enjoy your stay there. You can not beat the price and even if it were more expensive, it would still be a great place to stay.

I will be at Amerisuites in Calypso Cay in 37 days, and I really want to say "thank you" for the thoughtful and detailed post. This really helps me (and others) I'm sure. So glad you thought so highly of the property! yippee~gettin' excited....

Thanks so much for the review of this hotel, we are staying here in September and I have been looking for current reviews. Is there a grocery store close by and also any resturants within walking distance?

Depending on which way you exit the parking lot for CI&S, 192 (Bronson Hgwy) is about 3/4 away. There is a Publix right at the corner of 535 and 192. There's a Chilli's, Macaroni Grill and Pizzeria Uno right next to each other on 192 .. but much further west on 192, perhaps about 1.5 - 2 miles from the Hotel. I assume you'll have a car and if that's the case, there shouldn't be a problem. As I said before, 192 is not International Drive, but is EXTREMLEY commercial.

Unfortunately the Hotel does not have any restaurants, however if they claim to offer "local transportation", so there shouldn't be any problems. Please feel free to post here or private message me for more info. I am glad to do it. I think for a far offsite hotel,
it's a gem.

Thanks for your reply, we like to stay away from 192 since the really crazy drivers seem to be here. Is the hotel just south of Osceola Parkway? We will be comming from the airport on the 417 greenway. We will have a car but aare traveling with two other couples and one of the couples does not have a AP and probably will not want to spend every day in the parks. We are trying to figure out how to make sure they can have something to do and places to eat. Do you have more information about the transport avail through the hotel? I guess we could leave them the car and take the hotel transport if it is reliable, did you use it at all?
We usually stay on site so transsportation is not a problem, but I just could not pass up the great price for a 'suite' and a brand new hotel. How was traffic and how long did it take to drive to the parks??
Thanks again for your replys. Bev J

Thanks for the excellent, detailed report on the CI&S. What exactly were you expecting from your MK visit. It is the one Disney park that rarely receives a negative review. It is definitely a "themed" park with its various lands and is not a "thrill" park like the very excellent new IOA. But the theming is what most find, and I include myself in this group, so great about the MK. For our family it is truly---"Magical" even after all these many years. Sounds likes that you had a really good trip other than your disappointment with the MK. Your family might just be more of a Universal gang. Sounds like you made the right choice in your ticket media selection. Guess you will know better next time.

We will be staying at Country Inn and Suites in Sept.
Is the laundry rooms up and running? We will be away from home for 2 weeks and will be staying at CI&S mid way.I will need to do some laundry while we are there. I heard the laundry rooms had a problem(something about they couldn't hook up the machines or something)

Anyone know if this has been fixed?

This thread can get rather long if I continue to reply to questions here. Perhaps I should just send private replies back to those who asked them. I suppose I'll let the moderator decide that.

To answer the transportation question first:

Bev
From the airport the best directions that I rec'd were to take the
Beeline (528) West to I4 - West to 535 South to the hotel. The only problem is that the exit off of the Beeline to I4 was closed. We didn't realize the extent of this until we drove to the parks the following day and saw that the exit ramp was being worked on by construction crews because of some destruction earlier that week. The signs off the Beeline instructed us to exit off to International Drive (detour for I4). We took that until we ran into 535, made a left turn (South I think) and the hotel was bout 3/4 mile down on 535. If you hit 192, you've passed the entrance to the Hotel. (It's pretty hard to miss). Now once we knew the area,
we exited the hotel property through another exit that took us directly to Oceala Pkwy (Ponciana exit). We took that both to Universal via I4 or when going to Disney.

To answer the other questions:

Again, this is a hotel that I think one really needs a car to get around. We never inquired about transportation either locally or to the parks. This is just something that I noticed when I went to the "Calypso Cay" site. There is a small game room on premises, supposedly an indoor basketball court, the pool and a miniature golf course (small!). Let me repeat, this is NOT International Drive.
From what little I saw of it, you could walk from any number of hotels on International and have access to restaurants, stores, etc... and that of course depends on what part of International drive you're on.

As far as laundry facilities are concerned, we brought enough clothes for the week to avoid having to deal with long lines to use a few washers and dryers. Yes, I too remember that the laundry room was not vented properly therefore they could not offer this amenity at CI&S. There is a laundry room at Amerisuites, but again, I didn't use them. The link for CI&S is:

www.calypsocay.com/reserv/countryinnreserv/countryinnreservhome.html

I strongly suggest calling them to get more detailed infomation then I can provide. The staff there is pretty friendly and accomodating.

And last but not least to bailybrad:

I think what I found dissapointing about MK was that it looked "weathered" . It just lacked something.. and I would agree perhaps we are just more of a Universal gang. Again, maybe it just comes down to a dollars and cents issue. It cost my family $180 for a single day at one park (MK) versus $280 to spend 5 days at both US / IOA. Now that is what I call truly "magical"

I may be willing to give AK and MGM a shot in the future, but it's really hard to pass up what I feel is pretty much the same entertainment for far less money. Hey, just my opinion.

alde,
We have a 2 1/2 and just turned 5 year old ---the Universal parks, unfortunately, we as a family are just not ready for them yet. There are a few wonderfully attractions in each of the parks for them but overall the parks are much better for a bit older crowd. We enjoyed Universal several times before we had little ones. Back then they would run next day "free" type promos during the off-season, what a deal. Sadly enough, they only had the one park then so we have not been able to enjoy Spiderman or the wonderfull coasters that IOA has to offer. You are not allowed to play loosely with the word "magical" on these boards even if it does involve saving you large sums of money ;) . Your point about the passes is an excellent one. One of the ways that we have been able to stomach the large costs involved with all parks, Disney is purchasing season passes, getting in as much as 20+ plus days in the parks on the passes. This drove down our daily park admission for the 3 of us, the little one does not yet require a pass, to around $40 a day total. Just remember that when you compare MK to IOA , you are comparing parks that are much different in age, their target audience, etc. A point that has been discussed on these boards is that Disney has been a little lax in maintaining their parks the way they seemed to do in the past. Hopefully, they will remedy this sooner rather than later.

Don't worry about your thread getting too "long". You gave great information about an accommodation that many are really interested in, and can't wait to soak up all of your helpful information. The threads that drive me nuts are the ones that have people deciding before they have ever tried something ie., staying on-site vs. staying off-site, never eating off-site vs. only eating on-site, only DVC 2 bedrooms are appropriate vs. saving points in a studio, and so on and so forth. After you have been on the boards awhile you will really see some threads that need to be put out of their misery.

Again glad you had a great trip and your info about CI&S is very informative.

smiles .. I will refrain from using the word "magic" here .. was just trying to make a point .. and I wholeheartedly agree about the age the group and the parks. We have a 11 y/o son and a 7 y/o daughter. I just felt that US / IOA appealed to all of us. My wife really enjoyed Universal because it is mostly the "virtual reality" type attractions. My daughter loved Seuss Landing and my son couldn't get enough of Dueling Dragons and the Hulk so all in all there was a more broadbased appeal. I will also offer up the fact that we hit US / IOA for 5 days straight and then hit MK on our last day .. I would say that we were a bit "parked out" by then, so perhaps that is a little where my bias came from. This is our first trip and whether or not we reutn to Orlando in the future may dictate whether we would invest in the passes that offer more value. The purchase of the 5 day - multipark pass for US / IOA was strictly driven by this fact alone. Now that we've been there, I think there is a good chance we might return and give the other Disney parks a chance. Honestly, I think they all have something to offer. I wasn't really looking foward to this trip initially. I am NOT an amusement park fan by any stretchof the imagination. Our trips have been either to Europe (pre- children) or a house rental out in Montauk, LI or the jersey Shore. When I found this board I thought to myself "why are these people so fanatrical about Disney / Universal".. Well having had a taste, I can now see why. This is a great board. It was extremly instrumental in the choices I made and I can't thank the people who contribute here enough.

Thanks again!

we stayed there in 93. it was clean , 2 swimming pools, food court, game room and a bar. also laundry facilities. we were on the 2nd floor near the pool. had no problem with noise. very nice. i went to triple a and they made all the arrangements. we are going again in 2003 and plan to stay there if triple a recommends it again. i inquired with comfort inn and with triple a discount the rooms are 36.00 per night plus tax, if it is still like it was, i will be happy. if triple a recommends it, it will be fine. has anyone syayed there lately. thank you for any replys.

I stayed at Calypso Bay Country Inn & Suites in May and loved this hotel! It was an all girls trip...me, 2 DDs and 3 DGDs. We booked two suites and found them to be totally adequate for us. It's new so everything was clean and the grounds very lush and tidy. The breakfast included was a trememdous savings for us. The kids (8, 8, 4) loved the pool and the slide. We never used the laundry facilities and had a rental car, so those things weren't an issue with us. I don't think I'd stay there without a car as there is nothing within walking distance. I'd definitely stay there again.
