Interesting! I had no idea Disney considered opening the THV as it's own resort. I can see how it was easier (and no doubt less $$) to make them an addition to SSR, and I think they are a unique part of that resort.
But for Disney to increase pts to even out demand does seem unnecessary when BWV standard rooms no doubt are INCREDIBLY high demand during peak periods. I know they lowered them after the resort opened, and I think it was a great move on Disney's part. I am a big fan of the guaranteed booking categories. They give you assurance the room you want is in fact where you want it to be, and increases the value of owning pts at that specific resort to have the 11mo advantage on the popular booking categories.
Disney didn't even let the paint dry in the THV before they jacked the pt costs up. I would be unhappy had we bought SSR from Disney based on them marketing the THV as a bargain for the same pt costs as the 2BRs.
I really like SSR. We have spent a couple afternoons at the pools and I have enjoyed seeing the THV from the water ways to DTD from OKW. My kids want to stay at SSR but I have been putting off a trip there for a few reasons. First and biggest is the high pt cost of a stay compared to OKW. Knowing the location is comparable but the rooms are much lower in pts and much BIGGER at OKW makes it tough to pick SSR. Second is the lack of guaranteed booking categories. I would love to book a room in Congress Park or the Springs and know that will be the area we end up. Walking to DTD would definitely make up for smaller higher pt cost rooms.
That being said, with the new pt allocations a 2BR is the same at OKW and SSR during Dream season. Our 2014 plan is to try SSR during that time and risk the dreaded Carousel, lol. I would love to attempt the THV but not for an additional 8 to 10pts per night. All those pts and no king size bed??? I don't think so
