This wasn't on DCL, but our first cruise to Alaska on Holland America several years ago was the very last week of the season, in late September. It was southbound from Seward and the first two days were out in the open water before the ship gets into the inside passage. Just pure luck, we had a storm come through and seas were 30-35 feet! It was fun during the times I wasn't knocked out from anti-nausea meds. DH never did get sick -- he and about a dozen crew sat up in the crow's nest bar and rode the ride. Just imagine a HUGE cruise ship crashing up and down on waves that came over the bow and sent spray up to the crow's nest windows!! It really was amazing, but EVERYONE on the ship was sick almost. Dinners and shows were cancelled, and they even diverted the itinerary (skipping Sitka, which we still haven't been back to) to try and get us to calmer water quicker. It was quite the experience.

I cruised on the heels of Hurricane Floyd and remember there being alot of sick people on the cruise. It seemed everywhere we went we kept seeing vomit on the floors! I remember some people posting on this site back then that they sailed *through* Floyd and that the water was so high it was coming in the doors on Deck 5. They also said that most of the people camped out in the halls of the common areas. Does anyone else remember reading these posts?

Yup, I was on that famous 3/20 cruise as well, and it was pretty impressive! I know that when I lay in bed watching the bridge report (obviously not the only one doing so) and it got to "full gale" conditions, I realized this was not the typical cruise experience. Walking on board was a bit difficult--we all looked drunk!--and there were CMs everywhere discreetly passing out bags; however, despite feeling the rocking quite a lot in our deck 7 forward cabin, we didn't have drawers or doors slamming at all. OTOH, when I went out on deck 5 about 10 PM, I gained a new appreciation for the sailors of old who faced those seas in small sailing ships
