.... and wanted to say Hi to everyone.

Well, Virgin flights disastrous (24 hour delay on way home, unmarked plane on way out), car hire a shambles (thanks, Thomas Cook Signature) and somebody stole my nephew's pushchair ($10 from Walmart) from outside Mission Space on our last day.....

.... but the villa at Indian Creek was fabulous (1stfororlando.com), and the whole experience in between was wonderful. :teeth: :teeth:

I'll post a trip report when I'm less jet lagged!!

Same here Edie but we got both delays - we were on the engine trouble delayed flight out the same day as you got the spare plane and were with you on the way home on the other plane.

We have spoke to VA already today and are in process booking with the discount letter for July next year so there is a bright side to it all.

Welcome home to both of you. Sorry to hear you had such terrible trouble with the flights. Where were you flying from?

Looking forward to hearing more from both of you. :)

:( Heard about the Manchester delays when we checked in at Orlando on Friday afternoon - what a pain the in the bum - did they look after you all OK?

I'm just about to post about our trip - would be interested to know whether you thought the crowds were huge as we did.

Welcome back and good to hear you had a great trip :)

Weren't the flight delays due to a plane having an engine fail and having to return to the airport after dumping fuel or am I mixing this up with another airline?

The whole sorry story is thus: (apologies for the rant...)

We were flying from Manchester to MCO on 16 October, and home on 30 October.

When we arrived at Manchester on 16th, we noticed that there was another Orlando flight scheduled for 11.15 am. They got a liveried plane, we got a white plane which we were told was Air Atlanta Europe, but was actually an old Iberian airways plane. Maybe that's the same thing. Seats were very comfortable actually, and we got all the Virgin freebies, but none of the entertainment which was a big deal for our party.

The letter we were given said that our plane was delayed owing to unspecified technical difficulties, and we were given 10% future a Virgin flight. We don't think this is appropriate compensation as we are unlikely to be in a position to take it up for at least 2 years. Also, I think it would have been better if they had just admitted that the good plane had gone to the people who had been delayed for 24 hours. It was quite obvious to us all.

On the way home, we were 10 minutes from boarding when they announced that they had noticed a small tear in the skin of the left wing, which needed to be repaired. We were given hourly bulletins, firstly awaiting approval for the repair to be done, then extending the repair time, then awaiting approval, and finally at about 11pm were were told we had to go to a hotel. Only people with "special needs" were allowed to retrieve their luggage.

We were given 4 x 3 minute phone cards for 10 of us - which was immediately increased to 8 when I gave the Virgin rep a "look". Then coach driver got lost on the way to the hotel - the Adam's Mark at the Florida Mall. I could have got us there without a map.

Fortunately the hotel was lovely and we were well fed and watered. Unfortunately Virgin had told us that breakfast was from 8-9, when it was actualy 9-10.30, so we could all have got more sleep.

No Virgin staff in evidence at the hotel, and the hotel staff didn't seem to know what the plan was. My mum texted me with our new planned arrival at Manchester, which she had got from Teletext, so we deduced that our flight was to be 5.30 pm.

When we got to the airport, the poor people who were supposed to be flying on 31st had had their flight cancelled so we could have their plane.

On the plane on the way home, the children's games consoles didn't work, there was no soap in the toilets, there were insufficient kids' meals and they didn't bother coming round with the pre-landing sweets.

We have 50% off our next Virgin flights (not sure if we can add them together and make 60%??) but do we ever want to fly Virgin again? At the moment, I have no intention of doing so. Maybe I'll feel differently in a few days.

I've just worked out I've slept for 17 of the past 24 hours. Better go and load the washing machine!!

Forgot about this question!

We thought the crowds weren't too bad, except at the weekends. We queued for 30 mins (posted as 45) for ToT (I actually did it!!!!) on Monday 28th but otherwise fastpassed/expressed ourselves quite successfully. Did IOA on Tues 29th and everything was less than 20 mins. Rode Fire and Ice 4 times in 30 mins. Head still spinning!

Definitely busier than last time (5 weeks after 9/11) but probably comparable to the time before (Oct 1999).

Welcome Home  Sorry to hear about all of your troubles with the flights.

We're hoping to go next October 16th-30th maybe we should change our mind now ! ;)

Richard. :)

Hi Shirley,

yes to clarify the flight delays they were both VA flights.

Delay one was Wed 15th Oct when we flew on "Honey Pie" and were turned back due to engine failure. If the pilot hadn't told us we would never have noticed. We then flew out the day after on the spare Gatwick plane sent up to us. Edie flew on the unmarked spare air Atlanta jumbo. This was because the second manchester plane "Island Lady" was in scheduled maintainance elsewere.

We were due to return the 29th but complained to VA ground staff about the lost day and they changed us to the 30th.

On the 30th we were 20 mins from boarding "Island Lady" when a small split was discovered in the wing cover. Not a serious structure problem but needed attention to give smooth airflow over the wing. Delta engineers fitted a patch to the wing and were hoping to get approval for the repair by emailing a picture ( the pilot and ground crew were happy but procedure has to be followed) to Boeing. Unfortunately they insisted on a personal inspection which grounded us as there was no engineer in Orlando.

We were overnighted at Adam's Mark hotel in Florida Mall which was ok.

Returned to airport to find "Honey Pie" just arriving to collect us and had a very smooth flight home unfortunately leaving that days passengers to a 24hr delay whilst either a spare plane was found or the repair rubber stamped.

We have all got generous discount goodwill vouchers from VA ( these are in addition to any delay payments from our travel insurance) who in all honesty handled two difficult situations really quite well.

We will fly VA again the discount is too to tempting to pass on and we are happy with explanations given for the problems which I realise could occur to any airline - we were just really unlucky catching two in two weeks.

Hope this explains everything - nervous passengers please don't read this and panic - both planes were quite capable of flight but strict safety rules were followed in both cases (as they should be ) causing the delays.

Alec

Wow! What a sorry saga!

As you say, it certainly sounds as though Virgin did their best to manage the situation(s), but it must still have been a pain to be stuck in the middle of it all.

Glad that you are all back, safe and sound, and that the journies didn't mar otheriwse enjoyable trips! :)

Glad to hear you had a great holiday.

Sorry to hear about all your travel problems , though.

Look forward to your trip reports.
