Holy crow. Going to spring training for the 4th year in a row. Popular time, but I am looking at $136 a day for the least expensive car. I paid $65 for a full sized car on the same dates last year, up from $55 the 2 previous years.
The car is going to cost as much as the hotel room!

Tried Hertz, Avis, Budget and Enterprise.

I'm going to Phoenix from Houston. My car in Houston is $48 a day, and the most expensive premium car they offer is $71 a day. :confused3

thats rowdy. whenever i get a car in orlando area i never pay more than $250 for a WEEK. For those prices, you might as well just ride on the bus, haha.

Phoenix rentals have always been notoriously pricey. One year they were twice as much as in Vegas. For that trip, even though we weren't flying United, I ended up getting my best deal by linking through their site. Weird, but it worked best.

Good luck, hope you can find something more reasonable.

I'm not hopeful. I just tried Priceline. Same exact prices as the rental car companies are quoting.

Try Fox and Advantage. They will likely be a bit less. Also, the only way Priceline is really an advantage is by Name Your Own Price. By bidding you are likely to save.

Okay, found the code for a discount with the motor club. Same rates. :confused3

Did find a senior (over 50) discount, that will save me a whopping $5 a day.:sad2:

Check every single day. I have a rental in Philadelphia coming up. I've been able to shave $50 off the total price from my original reservation by checking every day.

I have had good luck with Hotwire in the past for rental cars. The downsides are that you don't know the company you're renting through until you book, and you also cannot make any changes or cancellations once you commit.

I thought it was just me who about had a heart attack when I looked up Phoenix car rentals!!! :scared:

After DLR, we are flying into PHX and the rental car prices were shocking! For 4 days, an SUV (5 people and lots of luggage), we are looking at $850!!!:sad:

I can get a 10% through my Disney Chase card, but I am still having a hard time swallowing that pill.

WOW.

I booked an economy car in Phoenix the week after Thanksgiving of this year. They were out of economy cars so they upgraded me to a mid-size (Ford Escape). I paid $164 with tax for a 6 day rental, with tax and everything included. That is less than $30/day.

I picked up and dropped off at the airport.

When we p/u in PHX it was a horrendous price.... We got it down by renting at the closest off airport place, and paid for a taxi to get it...I think we paid like 40.oo for the taxi, but our rental for 2 weeks was like 200+ less that way...

Several years ago we flew round trip for around $600 for a family of 5. When I went to book a van I was shocked to see the van was going to cost more than our flights. We ended up renting from a hotel maybe in Scottsdale. We paid around $50 for the taxi to the hotel the rental was around $250 and were able to return to the van at the airport. Saved around $500.:cool1:

Can you try naming your own price on priceline? I have done it with hotels dozens of times but never cars or flights. That could be a great way to save a bit.

Found the best deal with Budget, a "street fleet" Mustang for $83 a day BEFORE the $40 a day in taxes.

Of course, I have a Hertz Premium full sized in Houston for 3 days before this for $65 a day and only $17 a day in taxes.

I agree...keep checking. I just had the same experience checking rates for SJC and a week later snagged what I wanted at 1/2 the rate that showed the week before.
