Just bumped from OKW Grand Villa

This seems a bit odd to me, too. I posted about a (not so) similar situation in August, when DD and I checked into our studio at BCV. At the BC desk, with our luggage already checked, we were told they were "oversold" and we were being moved to a studio at OKW. When I didn't roll over and play dead, we eventually got our room at BCV. (If I had been thinking a little quicker, I would have asked for a concierge room at AKL, with reservations for the Sunrise Safari!). Anyway, there was a post on the DIS Resorts board about a week later from a lady whose family was upgraded from a standard room at the Yacht Club to a 2 BR at BCV. Yacht Club had some rooms being renovated, apparently. That would have been the same week we were there (1st week of August) and I know that BCV was at capacity. I wonder who got bumped from their reserved 2 BR, and where they wound up. My point is, DVC point rooms seem to be in the inventory system for Disney resorts, and they shouldn't be. They belong to DVC members, not CRO. Is there anything about this in our by-laws? Diana
There are 3 situations where the rooms go to CRO. First is for the points owned by DVD and not by the members. This happens especially with resorts that are not sold out and with Magical beginnings promotions. Second is when members give up points for exchanges like CC, DCL and the like. Lastly is at 60 months out when ALL units in inventory can be converted to cash. In the first two, the members have NO claim to the units. I know it's disconcerting to see rooms available for cash when none are so for points but that's the way the system works and it is appropriate.

I also saw on DVCTALK that someone else got the call about changing their GV reservation. They were offered two 2 BR instead as well. I responded with the info on the final offer in this thread, sounds like this is going to cost someone, likely us DVC members, a chunk of money.

I called Member Services today and it is a done deal.
She was very nice and made the transaction a sinch.

I got a little more reassurance that we would be in the same building and not spread across the resort.

I tried to get some more details about how many units were down. She mentioned 4 or 5 and it is regular maintenance.

I guess with 37 units you have to spread them out. But it sounds to me that someone really dropped the ball.

I was thinking it but didn't mention it, when she said that with all that is going on around that time, that most certainly "VIPs" would be staying at YC/BC or GF and not OKW.

Thanks for the support and great advice.

Dean, Just curious - why do you think that it will cost members a bunch of money?

I asumed (maybe, not correctly), that Disney would be paying for the two 2 bedroom points and the returned GV points out of its inventory. Isn't rehab given as one reason Disney keeps 4% of each resort?

Were you thinking of the rehab work? As is Diane, I'm thinking that it must have been something unexpected and pretty major - perhaps a burst pipe. If so, wouldn't insurance cover that?

If it was damage done by a guest (and I really hope not), I sure hope DVC collects from him/her.

Anyway, having trouble seeing why members would pay for any of this and am interested in your thinking. Thanks.

What is DVCTALK? Is it a website?
It's a Yahoo group...I'm not sure if it's okay to post the link, so I PM'd you.

This may not be all that unusual, it's just that we actually have someone who was effected posting. Weren't the BWV Grand Villas out of inventory for quite a few months a year or two ago? People who had them booked in advance may have faced a similar problem. That was something to do with fixing things with them. The GV's are sort of like "houses" so they can't be re-done properly in a day or two.

Hi,
I have an OKW GV booked for 11/9 - 11/14. Wondering if I'll be getting a phone call. I also notice you had a new addition 9/19/02, we had our 2nd ds 10/02/02. My last name is also Reilley, sp different. Glad everything worked out for you.

I'm sure there is built in rehab time for all the units, I suspect it's about a week a year. This seems different and above and beyond the usual rehab. What it will cost will depend on several factors. Who owns the units? Will DVC have to reimburse another Disney component? Were these units that were gotten with points given up for DCL, etc and cash inlay was expected? We'll likely never know what happened and what it cost. If the units would have sat empty and DVC doesn't have to pay anyone cash for them, the costs is almost nothing. OTOH, the cost could be a lot. The other issue is that the points returned to the affected members will be used later and create competition for other units that would not have happened otherwise. A double cost potentially. As for DVC paying for it out of thier pocket and not affecting the members, I'd bet against that idea.

My DW and I have decided to take the offer

Heh heh heh... I noticed everyone is referring to the OP as "Mary". But, since "Mary" mentioned his DW, I'll bet it ain't Mary. LOL!! ;) ;)

Our dates are 10/19 - 25.

We would be interested in a trade if the dates worked out. Some people really like the 2 2 bedrooms as an option.

We have stayed in a 2 bedroom at OKW often and love it. But have always dreamed of staying at a GV. We got a tour one year and always hoped we could get enough family together for a trip to justify the GV.

Well, I have been on the road lately, so my DISing has been spotty at best.
All I can say is "WOW". I was not aware that this type of thing happened.

Good luck...

I am sorry this happened, but to be honest, I have a GV booked for April, and I would HOPE this could happen to me! You are getting 2 two bedrooms for NOTHING!!!!! Hey, the GV's will be there a long, long time. There's always next year, or the year after, or the year after that!

Sorry that you have had to have this stressed feeling about your trip. I have a GV for 12/28-1/2 and after reading this would love to be offered your deal - My original group going has shrunk so we now have 5 people in a GV. Everyone having their own bed is going to be a plus but having two master suites would be even better. Also the points being available for another trip would be the icing on the cake. We don't stay in the room that much so making one unit a meeting place would be no trouble. Anyone having a special anniversary or event that you could work into a GV family gathering next year with those points you get to keep? I see you are looking on the brighter side and if you really try can probably make a huge pitcher of lemonade out of these lemons.

Take the 2/2brs and the points and SMILE!!!. It is really a better deal! We have been members since 93. We just recently used a 3 br. I was not really impressed with the lay out, after staying in the 2 br for many visits. Call me picky, but, really I found a few things that would make me not ever waste the points on a 3br again.
We had 10 people in our group. Plenty of bed space and bathrooms. My biggest beef was with the Masterbath. No door to separate the bedroom from the sinks and shower. I am a early riser so I woke my husband up when I got up to shower. No way to close it off, not to mention, had one of the kids came in not knowing I was in the middle of showering....Geez,,,I could have spooked them for life.....And the size of the water closet was very tight. I like the space in the 2br's MB.
The 2 rooms upstairs looked like hotel rooms. No balcony.
Just not as cozy, I suppose.
I would have been better off points wise had I booked a 2br and a studio or even 2/2 br's. Next time I'll know.
;)
