where do you think the disney folks got the idea of the "future " on the ship in wall-e????

I would not judge because our friend who went with us is 23 yrs old and she just had knee surgery and had to use one(she just could not do all the walking) so even if you think someone may not need it you have no idea what the problem is.I think if someone just does not want to walk they are not going to pay 45.00 a day for it plus those things dont get you very far very fast and are hard to get around in crowds...

I made a joke (above) but I know you are correct...
my dear father who passed away 6 years ago...used one on a trip to hersey park when he was ill...
I am not sure it was obvious that he needed one...and yes he could have walked( for a short while) ...but he would not have been able to enjoy the day and we enjoyed having to catch up to him.... and he enjoyed leading the pack one last time....

my mom even tried a spin on it when he got off one time... that was a mistake..:rotfl2: god help us if she ever really needs one.....

If this doesn't get locked quickly, we will have post after post of everyone's parent/mother-in-law/brother/cousin/friend/hairdresser who could never enjoy Disney if it wasn't for their ECVs. And how dare we judge who can use one or not .... :faint: :faint: :faint: Yep same old same old - Theme Park Board does this topic every other day, it seems!

But sadly ECVs are too linked to super-sensitive topic of obesity, and that's what kills every one of these threads. I wish we could have a discussion about the increasing number of ECVs and how the parks could handle it better, but will never happen. And it is a very timely topic, since the parks will only see more and more people wanting and needing ECVs due to mobility and stamina issues. Thats the future of Disney!

Oh well - OP you are very brave!

Oh well!

I have not been to disney in a couple of years... there were not too many on that trip...
my only complaint was the one ecv rider who moved our stroller into the rain so they could park their ride... (no they were not on it when we got back...just empty ecv...:rotfl2: )

I am sure if things become a big problem , disney will figure it out..:goodvibes

Hmmm- I had no idea this was a 'volatile subject'!!! I know from my DD that worked at the HM a couple of years back it is an ongoing problem, but guess I had not really noticed it so badly before on other trips?

As I said MANY do need it--it makes the difference between them going and not going. BUT in many instances it is obesity..and the this is to be seen at the rides as they hightail it out of them and there are rows of ECV's parked. Pretty darn sad.

There-said my 2 cents.

well first of all I was NOT flaming anyone just said sometimes it does not look as if someone needs it....I know there must be people who may not but hey they are paying a very high price for being lazy if that is the case so more power to them lol ;) I also know that for people that have small problems getting around it is better to rent a ECV then to have someone push them because there are lots of hills in the parks..I was there last week and did not notice a huge amount of people using them, now I did see a few teens (that after being told that they would have to go through the lines in the push chairs) get up and push the chairs to the side and sprint to the line...but hey they still waited and its not really my buisness....and I wouldnt have noticed if they hadnt made such a fuss..:headache:

The only time I saw folks that looked like they were taking advantage of this was when I saw an entire family (several adults, several older teens), scootin around. Some looked out of shape, others did not.

After getting back on their scooters (walking did not seem a problem) they all headed to an area close to the ride to smoke....it was a non smoking area.

Maybe I was reading too much into the incident, but they seemed to have a smug look on their faces like the rest of us were suckers for walking.

Even with people who are overweight, there is probably something else that brings about the need for an ECV. A few years ago, we went to DL & my friend rented one. He is overweight and can walk, but can't walk/stand for long periods of time. If you were to take a closer look at him, you would see the skin grafts on his leg where a chunk of muscle & tissue was ripped out by a piece of machinery years ago. So, there's not much left of his lower leg except skin & bone. Thus the need for the ECV. :thumbsup2

So, you never really know what their level of need is. I'm sure a lot of people take advantage, but probably not as many as you think.

:rotfl2: :rotfl2:

Anyway, we were there last week with both grandparents, and boy do I wish they ALL had rented them!!! My father is in pretty good shape, but has a very very bad back, and all the walking was killing him. My mother is obese, and was going very slow, and even stayed in the hotel room for a day or two because she was tired (though she would not admit to that being the reason :rolleyes1 ). MIL is also obese, and was very slow the whole time - I can't tell you how many times we had to stop and wait for the lot of them - DH walks fast, and no matter what you say to him, he "can't" slow down. And lastly, we have FIL who was a trooper, but has had 2 knee replacements, and really should have rented one just to save his knees a bit.
So is obesity and just plain being out of shape an excuse for renting a ECV - hell, if you want to pay the $$$ for it, and it makes you go faster, go for it - it will save me time having to walk past ya!!! :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

My dad used one - because he is fat and out of shape. My mom and I made him, so he could keep up. Me, DH, my mom, and my kids are very active, and fast. He's slow, and gets winded, and either he would've spent the vacation sitting on benches, or trying to keep up, endangering his health (he's had some mini stokes and has high bp). He also would've felt horrible holding everyone else up. We rented from WDW, even though it's more expensive, so not to deal with the buses.

Who gives a damn whether they need them or not? It is not up to anybody to judge.

Last I knew this was a free country and we are allowed to choose our mobility methods on what WE think is the best choice for us, not what a bunch of judgmental strangers think..

The only qualification needed is the cash to rent one.
