Just back yesterday, the yellow flies were terrible, the closer you are to the canal the worst they were. we were in 1100 loop and our friends were in 1500 loop they had a canal behind them and we could not stay to visit long the yellow flies were horrible and their site. my husband was bitten and his hand swole up so bad I was afraid we were going to have to go to the hospital.

Does anyone know what would repel yellow flies....

"repel" and "off" did not work,

other than the bugs we had a beautiful week, with time to rest and enjoy all the magic we could handle.....

Well if you have any questions just let me know I will see if I could answer for you.

We were in 1511 next to the canal and had an infestation of those pests. My husband renamed the loop "Buckfly Bend." We used repel (with deet) and an all-natural repellent, but neither seemed to work effectively. I wonder if they are only bad this time of year, or if they are a constant problem. I expected some mosquitoes, but I really thought Ft Wilderness sprayed to eradicate most biting pests.

We in loop 100 right now, and do not sit out at night. First night here they got us ... deet seemed to help some, but we still got nailed.

The problem is, the itching lasts for days, and have not found anything that helps much. Tried Cortaid and some spray stuff. Driving my wife nuts.

I have never seen these here or anywhere else in Florida ... guess we have been lucky.

I am going to ask a castmember what they are and what repels them.

John

From my searches on the internet I believe they are deerflies. And if they are, then nothing much deters or kills them. They are a cousin to the horsefly and are quite a pest! I saw for sale on the internet some yellow patches to wear on your hat that were supposed to attract them (and then what I couldn't figure out!)

They bothered us a lot last end-of-May-beginning-of-June. I hate to hear that people are having trouble with them this year, too. I think they are a seasonal problem and I'm hoping they won't be there this year for our end-of-June-beginning-of-July trip. We'll be packing a pair of lightweight pants and long-sleeved shirts, just in case.

If anyone knows anything else or more helpful about these pests, please post!

MrKTI, other than the flies are you having fun?

We were at the Wilderness Lodge last year at this time..last week of May or so...and they were AWFUL! I've never experienced that before. The staff at the pool were covered in bite..poor folks. We enjoy sitting out on the balcony...and sure enough you couldn't be out there long with the pesky devils landing on you. We were told at that time there was a particulary agressive invasion of them last year...sorry to hear it's there again.
I'm also wondering ...is this a problem only durring this time of year...as we are planning our first to the campground in August...and figure the heat will be bad enough..hope we don't have to deal with the flies again.

Hate to hear they are back. Last year was the first year we had problems with them at FW. The only thing that worked for us last year was to sit a high speed box fan out and sit right in front of it. Old fashion fly paper will trap them if they land on it but it is not a pretty sight.

I ended up in the ER last year from them....they almost sawed my wedding ring off that is how bad my hand swelled up.

We were there last June and they were awful!! You couldn't even sit outside. They were not bad at the pools - just at the campsite. Like the other poster said, nothing seemed to work. They seemed to like my husband's legs the best though. His ankles swelled up. He had red pimpley things on his legs for a month. Yuck!!

The problem with FW is it's there is too much standing water which is perfect for the breeding of these nasty flies. Also there is no real control for them either. They start hatching in May all the way through Sept, with May and June the worst months. There are fly traps to help control and FW should investigate into that. Someone posted on another thread about this same subject that Disney was unaware of these flies; I sure don't buy that one. Some of the local colleges are finding certain unbelievable ways to control these nasty pest. If I remember correctly UCF had come up with wearing some sort of bucket on your head :earseek: .

We stayed in the 900 loop and they were bad in the evening and the early morning. A few in the afternoon. We call them yellow-flies and I swell up big time when I get bite by them.
