Just back - mosquitoes?!?!

just got back from a wonderful long weekend - one night at old key west followed by 3 at the Poly villas. Both my husband and I got completely destroyed by mosquitoes at both resorts. It was so bad that our second two nights we just stayed in our room and sat in bed in the dark rather than sit on the patio after our son went to sleep. I bought some bug spray once we got to the Poly but I don't think it helped

I've been going to Disney regularly for my entire life and I can never remember being bitten like this. I told my husband I'd go online and see if anyone else had had this experience lately. My husband said he even got a few more bites at the Oasis pool this morning before we left.

Maybe Irma washed away whatever Disney sprays to keep mosquitos away? Is that even possible? Obviously I know Florida is full of mosquitoes, but I'd never been bitten like this before. Have I just been lucky all these years? Am I going to have to start putting repellant into my park bag? Ha.

I spent last week at the poly, checked out Saturday morning. I'm covered in mosquito bites more than I've ever had been before.

Yikes! That sucks. I am wondering if any flooding in the area from Irma may be contributing to an increase in the mosquito population. I have never had more than a stray bite here or there during a Disney trip. I thought they also had been increasing their spraying over zika fears the last couple years. Hoping you don't get any more bites!

Haven't read of anyone else having this issue with mosquitoes. Maybe your thread here will draw in others who may have had the same experience as you did.

Sorry you got eaten alive by mosquitoes. That must have been miserable.

In July my dd got several mosquito bites while we were at the quiet pool at BWI. We've been going for years and never got bitten once until this summer.

We were at the Poly the end of August until Labor Day, no mosquitoes noted and we sat on our deck, walked on the beach and the path between the Poly and the GF in the evening several times. Must have been the excessive rain with Irma!

Coming from a coastal state, I guarantee the mosquitoes are totally the result of Irma and the flooding. Mosquitoes breed in ANY puddle. Disney probably maintains a nice balance of a targeted environmentally friendly mosquito pesticide and/or repellant in their bodies of water, but it will take them awhile to get that balance back and they can't dose every puddle.

We just got back from yacht club and we didn't get 1 bite. In fact my son and I were surprised that we didn't get bit. We were out very late on the boardwalk and the parks so it probably depends on where your at.

Yes also at the Poly last week and covered in mosquito bites. We actually had a 2nd floor room the first night, switched to one with a balcony and then only ended up sitting on the balcony about 30 min the rest of the trip!

Ha. Miserable is a strong word - we still had a great time but the bites were bad. They were the wake you up at night itching kind of bites!

I knew there had to be a reason. This was my guess.

Bummer. I got a couple of bites during our trip in April (first trip where I noticed getting any bites), but nothing terrible. This definitely sounds like an Irma-induced phenomenon.

Last year they had spray cans in the room and tables with spray at the parks. I didn't use them and have never gotten bitten at Disney. Is that not the case anymore? Sorry to hear that many of you are suffering from mosquito bites. Hope they get the problem under control soon.

Must be Irma. I’ve had many August trips and rare to get bitten. I never pack bug spray, never needed it.

Same here! It was so bad, at first I was afraid it was bed bugs, but my husband pointed out that our son who was asleep by 7:30 every night and never out on the balconies didn't get one bit. He also reminded me that he felt himself getting bit over and over again on the balcony. I've had the occasional mosquito bite here and there over the years, and I've never packed bug spray, so I've never experienced anything like this. This was insane. I figured it had to be Irma related, and that others were experiencing similar things.

We were at POR as well as HRH at Universal the last week of August and didn't get a single bug bite. Both resorts have water and lots of foliage as well. I'm curious now if it is Irma related, the time of year, or perhaps certain resorts.

I was just at BC and our balcony looked out over some un-landscaped treed area, which was full of mosquitoes. Every time we opened the slider, a couple would get in. We were killing them every day and also got a few bites just walking around outside. I've never seen that many mosquitos at Disney.

There was a mosquito notice at the entrance to AK: it was a little sidewalk sign on where to get mosquito repellent-they were giving it out for free.
