Our sixth trip, but first in five years (GF June 1989, BC June 1994, BC July 1996, GF July 1997, GF July 1998, Swan August 2003). Fourteen years from the first to this one, and our kids have gone from 7, 3, 2 to 21, 17, 16. (I guess that means my wife and I have aged the same 14 years, but we’ll ignore that). Oldest is an adult, middle will be in college in a year, youngest is driving. No more “kids”, so this trip was very different.

My oldest didn’t even want to go on vacation with us this year until we decided on Disney. Looking at old pictures and tapes reminded us how special those vacations were. Our more recent trips (such as a cruise) were better in most ways now that the kids are older, but we got the urge to go back to WDW one more time before they are all adults. My younger son said this almost isn’t a vacation – it’s sort of like going back home.

I think what strikes me most now is that it doesn’t seem like fourteen years since our first trip. It doesn’t seem like five years since the last trip. It’s a cliché, but they really do grow up fast – faster than I’m ready for. We have great memories of all the trips and some special moments regarding each of the kids – no different this trip.

This was likely it for us at Disney as a family. My wife’s not the Disney fan the rest of us are, and she often waits patiently while we are on attractions that are too wild for her. The kids will go back on their own I’m sure, especially when they have their own families. And they did promise to take us back for the 50th anniversary. But this one sort of closes the book on Disney as we’ve come to know it.

Work has really piled up since I was gone, and we spent time in Wisconsin after out Disney trip also; I doubt I’ll have time to do a trip report, but I’d gladly answer any questions. Crowds were very large (and we’ve experienced summer crowds on all our other trips), but that probably has changed already as we get later in August. Crowds due to FTP – but we did the early morning routine most days and saw just about everything we wanted to. YC/BC seemed very crowded – never made it in to Beaches and Cream. Did E-night on 8/5 (also more crowded than expected); MK hours extended to 11:00 without advance notice. As a result , we didn’t make it to the Goodnight Kiss (couldn’t last until 2 or 2:30 – assuming they did it at all that night). Did all four parks, plus Universal and IOA (Spider-Man was the best attraction we saw, and we did nearly 70 in total). Really enjoyed the music in Epcot, especially Baka Beyond. Rain was pretty normal for that time of year – excpept one very massive and long storm our first night (7/31). Swan was a great hotel – construction at BC was an eyesore in my opinion. Really enjoyed the walk to Epcot (boat is too slow – we beat it every time).

Thanks to everyone on the boards for all the information for this and previous trips, especially at the Swan/Dolphin and Starwood threads. I’ve learned a lot of things here – some very important, some just interesting or fun, all of it very helpful and enjoyable.

I enjoyed your report! My kids are 1 and 5 so we're just starting out on the family vacation memories at WDW. DH is the sour puss - doesn't like WDW at all but he puts on the best face he can. :smooth: Were you able to go out in the rain to the parks? I think myself and DS who is 5 could do it but wondering how you handle having the younger ones who are stroller bound in the rain? Just curious what experience you've had with that over the years.

How late did you stay on the eride night? I hear the crowds can thin out after the first hour. Our erides nights start at 8 and 7 p.m. (2 of them) and I'm hoping to bring the 5 yr old to at least one.

Welcome back!

On our first trip we had two strollers - I don't remember having any rain when we were out; I think we were always back before the PM rain. Other trips we got ponchos and just slogged along in the rain - keeps the lines down. This time we just had one day with rain at the parks - had to buy ponchos since we left the ones we brought at the hotel.

We stayed at e-ride night until 1:30; by midnight the lines were pretty short - the only wait we had was for Space Mt and I think there were still people in line from before 11:00; that was only a 20 minute wait. Walked on Alien after that, then TTA, then Haunted Mansion; then a short wait for BTMRR, then walked on Splash Mt (that's a long queue area). By 1:30 we were getting tired and left. E-ride starting at 7:00 or 8:00 would be great.

ww52,

Time does fly by. Our kids were 3 and 6 for their first trip and 16 and 19 for our last trip. My best advice - don't stop going to Disney because the kids are grown. My DH and I really enjoy the parks without the kids. Try going during the Food and Wine Feast - lots of fun.

ww52, That's so sad. Sad that kids grow up so quickly?! I have a 23 y/o son and a 13 y/o daughter. My son doesn't come to WDW with us any more but he did go on his own recently with his GF! We still go every year with our DD and reminise about past visits with DS. I know they have to grow up but in retrospect it seemed to happen overnight. I enjoyed reading your post and certainly can identify with you!

ww52,

Thank you for you post. It is wonderful to hear about your trip and all your family memories. It makes us stop and think about how fast time actually goes. We too had not been in 5 years. We just got back from our FTP and we were in Epcot on 7/31 for that rainy day - tip - head for Innovations when the rain comes, we spend hours in there!

I am so glad that we did WDW this year. We made alot of special memories. I think it was a perfect time for our children, 9,8,6,4, & 17mos to experience WDW.

Thanks for sharing.

Wishing you and everyone else many magical years ahead!

WW52-

We've made 10 trips to WDW. Our son's first was when he was 6. Next March we'll be returning for our 11th trip with our son (now 25) and his wife. They met in the WDW College Program and can hardly wait to go back! I fully empathize with your feelings about kids growing up (oh boy, do I ever!)- it's one of the bitter-sweet aspects of parenthood, but Disney has a unique way of promoting family closeness. Even with grown children.

Things change, but we are happily looking forward to sharing WDW in the future with grandchildren. We'll make new memories and start the Magic all over again.

I enjoyed your review. I can also relate to having the kids grow up going to Disney. We started going to Disney when my oldest was 6yr old in 1982. We have been back 8 times since then and our family grew to one more. He got an earlier start at 18 months. We are going back next June with my grandson. I can't wait!

Your post reminded me of our family trips through the years. I was 6 and my brother 4 on our first trip to WDW and we continued going as a family until a final trip to DL when we were 21 and 19. Now I'm taking my husband and daughter, who will be on her 5th trip next year. So many great memories growing up and creating new ones with my family now.

Tour Guide Mike -
I'd highly recommend TGM for anyone who has never been to WDW before, or maybe have only gone a few times and not recently. If you know a lot about WDW and have a general idea of how to plan, it has less value.

The interface is a bit difficult getting used to, but there is a lot of information - including more and more pictures tours that are very well done.

I found it not as useful as I thought it would be, in part because this was our sixth trip, and in part because I decided not to do too much specific itinerary planning. But he has great guidlines for general strategies that you can turn into step by step plans if you want.

I didn't reference the site at all from about three weeks to go to the trip - but I know I got a lot of good info that I just kept in my head.

For those who don't know - TGM is a fee based site (I think $25, though I got it for $15 using a Mousesavers code); access is good for up to 3 (or maybe six) months after your trip. You can get a general feel for what it offers without paying for a login id, but the real value is in the "premium" content.
