Hi all.

Just got back from going to DL & DCA on Fri & Sat. It was so much fun-though we had only been home 1 month from WDW. I did miss so much that WDW has to offer, but we still had a great time.

We left at 340 am and arrived after getting our room to DL at 11 am. I was expecting it to be packed, and it was very nice. We did most of DL, then went to DCA, then back to DL until midnight.

The next day, we arrived at DL at 810 am, stayed until 10 am, went to DCA until 430, then to DL.

At 1130 pm, we went on the train. And what do you know, the castmembers said it was the first day for the new train on the track. I dont remember the name right now of it. I was told it was purchased, then refurbised and long awaited. They had hoped it would be out a week ago, but didnt make it. It was running very slow, as they were breaking it in they said. They had to vent the steam constantly on it, and a lot at that. At all the stops, someone would be waiting for them to arrive, then check out the train. We were sitting right behind the engine. It has a very distint sound to it, unlike the other trains. Reminded me of the casey jr train, where you hear a puff on the right side, then the left. It looked very nice as well. All the engineers were so happy it was running. They said to keep it a secret since it wasnt supposed to be out yet, so you wont tell anyone-will you??!! :flower:

If you have any questions about anything, let me know.

next trip-wdw in may!! Cant wait!!!

I think its actually the >Ward< Kimball. :p (Edit - Phooey Mary Jo for correcting so fast.)

I do know that it last came from Cedar Point Amusement Park here in Northern Ohio. Its also the last of the planned 'Golden Vehicles' to be unveiled.

Heh heh -- I knew I'd better before one of you experts did :teeth:

Or is this a different ride?

Darnit, we were planning on going to Disneyland Saturday and decided not to. I've been waiting for engine number 5 for months!!!

I dont know about it being a golden vehicle. They were talking about how good the paint looks in the daytime, and it was indeed red.

This is indeed a new engine that has debuted on the Disneyland Railroad - the train that circles Disneyland. The Ward Kimball joins the C.K. Holliday, E.P. Ripley, Fred Gurley and Ernest S. Marsh.

The "gold vehicle" designation is a bit misleading. The cab is red and the boiler a very dark blue. There is, however, gold leafing applied to various decorative elements, such as the engine name and the picture on the lamp. It is very tastefully done and isn't as obvious as the other vehicles around the park that were decorated for the 50th. The other engines do not have any gold leafing applied to them, so it is a bit unique and celebratory that the Ward is decorated this way.

Though it is a "new" engine on the DRR, the Ward Kimball is actually 103 years old. The engine was originally named the Maud L. and was used on the sugar cane fields of the Laurel Valley Plantation in Louisiana. It would later run at Cedar Point amusement park in Northern Ohio.

My friend Steve DeGaetano, who wrote a book about the Disneyland Railroad, has authored a history of the Ward Kimball engine that is currently appearing on MiceAge.com - http://www.miceage.com/guest/gu062005a.htm - for anyone interested.

I know about the colors...thats why I posted the link explaining all of the details. But it is still the designated represenative of the 'Golden Vehicles' for the railroad. I didn't have time to track down the earlier story detailing its life at Cedar Point and earlier.

Don't try to teach an old mouse new tricks. :)

My younger son LOVES trains (his favorite ride at DL is the Monorail) so we'll be sure to ride this new one in August! :cool1:
