Just back from 17 nights at the Hard Rock. Had a great time. My daughter (2 1/2) loved every minute of it.

Having fun in a Universal store

When we checked in we had been allocated a king suite (room 1100) on the ground floor, so we changed it for a king suite on a higher floor (4100). Check-in was very smooth. I was never asked for my AAA ID. This room had a partial view of the pool and was mainly obscured by the palms.

HRH Pool

We used Valet on the first night, then put the car in self-park for the rest of our stay. Valet is $14.91+tip per night and self park is $7.46 per night.

During our stay we ate around the pool (beach club) several times. In the week the pool area was usually quiet and at the weekends it was a lot busier. The pool servers usually come out around 11.00am. We noticed the pool always got busier towards the end of the day. At the weekends we were usually asked for or room cards as ID to get towels for the pool.

Typical weekday morning at the Hard Rock pool

For lunch around the pool for 2 adults 1 child, it would usually cost around $50 inc tip (added automatically).

One afternoon they closed off the volleyball area and filmed an episode of 'Let's Cook' with Twisted sisted frontman 'Dee Snider'. Later on that day the band 'Men at Work' were playing in the lobby. This was a ticketed event called 'Velvet Sessions' which happens on the last Thursday of every month. We were given complimentary tickets from Carlton Hudson (hotel manger).

Hard Rock Cabanas

Places we ate included:

The Kitchen (nice, quieter, but pricey $120 for 2ad 1ch inc tip)

The Kitchen

Hard Rock Cafe (quite reasonable prices ($90 for 2ad, 1ch inc. tip), All access card is a must for immediate seating, steaks arent as good as the used to be, but the Jumbo Combo, ribs and Fajitas are great, the manageress (Denise) was great with our daughter

Margaritiville (usually have to wait for a table and eat outside, large portions, great food and reasonably priced)

Mythos (ate here 3 times, great food for a theme park and cheaper ($40) than eating around the pool)
DSC01049.JPG

Finnegans (good basic food, good atmosphere and a nice cool place to get away from the afternoon heat in USF)

Richters (counter service, nice burgers, was surprised that they had no childrens meals ($28).

Mythos Appetizer

Other places we ate included MGM's Hollywood and Vine and the sci-fi restaurant, Liberty tree tavern, Cindy's Royal table, Crystal palace (twice), Rainforest cafe and Planet Hollywood.

As an inexspensive and convenient way to start the day with breakfast, we used to grab a box of $3.99 'crispy creme' donuts (to share) from the Walgreens on the corner of I-drive. We also bought a cooler box, milk and sodas from here and filled the cooler with ice from the machine located right outside of the room. The laundry rooms were also so located on the 2nd and 4th floors, so we had one just down the hallway.

We usually walked to the parks through the gate at the side of the pool, as we found this much faster than waiting for the boat (as nice as it is). We also found it quicker to walk to the parks by going down the steps to the car park and turning left. This would usually bring us to the entrancre of USF in about 3 minutes.

During our stay we never encountered any major queues in both IOA and USF . The hulk was always a walk on (even during HHN, with express passes). My daughter was a bit dissapointed that she never got to see Dora (apparantly this character has been taken away permenantly).

Other highlights during our stay included:

Outbound Flights: Upstairs cabin was empty. Air hostesses kept our daughter entertained for most of the 9 hours in the air.

Virgin Atlantic

Illuminations cruise: Shared this with another couple. Great way to see the fireworks at EPCOT. Cost $150 with a $30 tip. Didn't make an advanced reservation. Walked upto the Yacht club marina on the night.

Housekeeping putting helium balloons in the room for our daughter.

HHN on the 30th: Some great houses and the express passes were a godsend.

hhn%201.JPG

FOTL: Worth the price of the stay alone.

Universal and IOA Staff: Seem to get friendlier every year.

Hard Rock Pool: Coolest pool on the planet IMHO.

Fantasmic dinner package.

Ride in the front of the monorail at MK with the driver.
DSC01044.JPG

Getting to Disney parks early: Cannot stress this enough. At MK we did 10 rides before 11am then had lunch and left the park by 12.30pm.

Kids Nite Out: (night of HHN) We had never left our daughter (Hannah) with anyone before, so it was a very big step for us to leave her with someone, especially a stranger in a foreign country. I did a lot of research before we left and then contacted the concierge at the HR hotel, who reccomended a company called 'kids nite out'. We had a caregiver called "Ellen" who exceeded everyone of our expectations. I cannot express how professional this company is. Within seconds she had Hannah's 100% attention and we were able to leave the room without her noticing. On returning to the room she gave us a written report what she had done and at what times.

Going home

Problems Encountered:

Double billed for room service. Had to ask front desk to rectify this twice.

Line jumping into the express line on the Hulk Ride.

Hope this post has been informative. Any questions?

no questions but THANKS!
i love looking at universal and hhn pics
awsome trip report

Great trip report. We are staying for 1 night on oct 19th so have a couple of questions. We are going to check in early so that we can go to the parks and take advantage of FOTL passes. Is there anywhere to put our luggage safe(we will have a laptop with us) whilst we are waiting for our room to be ready? Or will the luggage be just as safe in our car, as it will basically be a couple of holdalls. Also, what time does the pool stay open until?

many thanks for any info

If you are checking in mid-week, the chances are they may have your room ready as the hotel is usually quiet during this period and busy at the weekends.

If your room isn't ready, the front desk will give you your room keys to use in the parks for FOTL access that day and the following day.

When you check-in to the hotel, you have to make the decision on whether to use valet and pull the car right up to the front of the lobby or put it in self park. If you use valet, one of the valet guys will get someone from bell services to hold your luggage in a secure room and then they will take it to your room when it is ready. If you put the car in self park, you can always take your luggage to bell services yourself. They are located next to the concierge desk on the left of the lobby, as you walk in.

We found the pool was usually open till 9pm in the week and 11pm at weekends. The hot tub (next to the pool) usually stays open later.

What a great report and fantastic pictures. We had to skip a year and I am hoping we go back next summer before we have to pay for college tuitions.

One of the best reports and pictures I've seen.
Your DD is an absolute doll!

Thanks for taking the time to share.

Great report and the pictures are an awesome touch. Your daughter is very adorable. How lucky she is to have parents to take her on such a great trip!

Thansk for the great report, the picture of the cabanas and pool menu were especially helpfull.

Oh wow sounds like a fab time and great pictures of your daughter really enjoying herself :)
Claire ;)

Those are really great pictures. What kind of camera is it?

Thanks. I used two different cameras. The first one (Sony DSC-L1) I dropped when chasing my daughter around the mystic fountain! Unfortunatley none of the controls worked after that, so I went up to Circuit City by the Millenia mall and bought a Sony DSC-M1 and a 1 gig pro duo memory card http://www.steves-digicams.com/2004_reviews/m1.html It takes good photos, but the movies are great. When I play them back on through the TV, the quality is just as equal to that of a good quality digital camcorder, all in a camera the size of a deck of cards!

thank you so much for posting all of those pictures. what did you think of hhn?

thanks again,

We really enjoyed HHN, but towards the end of the night things really did become a bit too much-Some of the waits for the houses were 1 hour+. We particulary liked the house where I had to wear the helmet with the light on it (terror mines?) and the rest of the group had to follow as the helmet was the only light source in there.

Thanks for sharing the camera info. I have a Sony V1 that I use for taking pictures in the park. It's a couple years old, but takes movies too, that's how I made all my web pages. I'd like to upgrade to the latest model (V3) because the newer one captures video at 30 FPS, whereas mine is only 15.
The Sony line is great for theme parks. I also have a Canon 20D and 24-70L lens which I use for taking horse jumping pictures, because it can shoot at 5fps. If your kid does sports, you'll probably get one. Try this forum

Thanks for the advice regarding the cameras. The new one I have now (M1) does videos at 30FPS and I really notice the difference. The film runs a lot smoother and less jittery. Great for the POV's! ;) Thanks for the link. I'll check that out.

Thank you. She had great fun at the HRH, especially around the pool area (we could never get her out of the damn thing!) We also took her to the Hard Rock for 10 nights in 2004, so despite her age, she still remembered a lot of it. Whenever she sees the Hard Rock logo, she usually says, "Daddy I go to America!"

When we went to HHN, she played with the babysitters toys that she had brought, then she took her down to Emack and Bolios for an ice cream.

i loved reading about your trip.

the pic of your room is so different than mine. i was in room 7100 and it was 2 large rooms and large bath. i agree with the view. it was gorgeous. i was lucky not to have any palm trees blocking my view. i slept with the curtains open so i could glaze out at the park during the night.

i did hhn 3 nights in a row. came back last week.
i bought the express pass for each night and never had more than a 5 minute wait in line for the houses. i went to the stay and scream and did many houses without the pass. waited until 10 at night to start using the pass to repeat the houses.

i have to agree with you, hard rock hotel is awesome !

your daughter is a real beauty !

I love to do trip reports and just wanted you to know I LOVED reading yours! Your pictures are terrific and add a lot! Thanks for taking the time to share so much... I am looking forward to visiting the HRH after reading your report!
