We(me, DH, DD8, DD5, DD1, My Mom, My Dad, SIL) just returned from SSR on Sunday. We were in rooms 1501 (studio), & 1503 (1 bed). They had an awesome view of DD, and were just steps away from the quiet pool. They were on the 1st floor, non-smoking units. They were in pretty good shape, a little wear and tear on the carpets, especially around the bathroom entrance in the 1 bed. There was already a large hole that was starting from the carpet pulling away and fraying from the door area. But overall, the units looked great. I wasn't sure how I'd like SSR in comparison to the "hotel" type DVC units we have stayed in, but I was pleasantly surprised. I enjoyed being on the ground floor and not having to deal with the elevator (and DD's arguing over who's turn to push the buttons). Having the car close by was better than I thought, and less money for valet tips and bell man was a plus too. Overall we really liked SSR. The biggest issue for us was the bus service. Several times we waited for a bus for over 25 minutes, a couple of times around 40 min. At Epcot during late EMH we arrived at the bus stop around 11:30. The OKW bus arrived, and was packed, he told us that an SSR bus should be coming shortly. We continued to wait for another 25 minutes until the next OKW bus arrived. I asked if she would go also be going to SSR, she replied "no". I told her that 2 OKW busses had come and no SSR bus, so she made a phone call and told us she would drop us at SSR after her OKW stops. So we finally arrived back at the room at 12:45, ridiculous IMHO. We had to ride the OKW bus back from AK one evening at close. Having to go through all of OKW before SSR makes for a really long trip. Hopefully as SSR grows, the bus service will improve (nothing that ruined our trip, just aggravating at times). We did notice several people in the evening's trying to get to DD, riding the SSR busses. The bus drivers are telling them that this is the fastest way to get to DD. My DH and I mentioned this to our guide while visiting the sales office. Hopefully he will have it checked in to as he said he will. I for one, would not be happy paying dues for SSR busses, only to have to stand on the bus on the way home because there are people wanting to hitch a ride to DD, and filling up the busses.

New stuff we did this trip, Keys to the Kingdom tour (just me and DH, my parents kept the kids), awesome! We loved it and want to do more tours in the future if we can. We ate at Teppanyaki, Brown Derby, Lotus Blossom, and Earl of Sandwich, all new to us this trip. Teppanyaki, was probably our favorite of the new stuff, and Ohana, was the best meal of all. We got seated at 6:55 right at the window with an awesome view of Wishes at 7:00. My parents and SIL kept asking how I scored the view? It was really just luck, as the lobby was swarming with people watching the Superbowl, on the TV's in the bar area and upstairs lobby.

And the best part of the whole trip!!!! DH and I attended the member meeting on Wed. and then went over to meet our guide for the 1st time. We have never actually met, just spoken over the phone. He wasn't available at that time, so we made an appointment for Sat. At our meeting we put ourselves on the waitlist for 150 more points at VWL. Our guide thinks that we should have them within the next couple of weeks. He said that they are buying backs "tons" on contracts right now, and should have some Feb. points very shortly. We decided to stick with VWL as it is our favorite, and it's so much smaller than SSR. Don't get me wrong, I would happily stay at SSR in the future, but VWL is just "home" for us. This will bring our total to 320 points, so it will work out better for us in the future. Our guide did say that the current buy back of $5 and $10 at SSR incentive will be gone at the end of the month. Can't wait to actually get those points in my account! DH says that I have "ruined" him and made it where all he wants to do is go to WDW! He says that like it's a problem!! ;) Anyway, it was the best Valentines gift I have ever gotten! :love2: If anyone is still reading and has any questions, I'd be happy to answer them.

And last but not least, I have to mention the number of rude, ridiculous people we encountered on this trip. I could list several examples, but the worst was Sat. morning. We had a PS for the Princess Storybook Breakfast at Epcot in the Norway pavilion. We arrived to find that the Breakfast had to be cancelled because they had no power in the kitchen due to a blown transformer. They still did a meet and greet with the princesses in the restaurant, and then gave us a complimentary meal at the electric umbrella. Of course a dissapointment to my girls, but life goes on. I felt so sorry for the restaurant manager out in front of Akershus. This one particular lady was just going on and on about how the only reason they had come to Epcot that day was for the breakfast for her 4 year olds birthday. She wanted to be compansated for her Tickets to the park that day, and how "they didn't eat the type of food that was served at the OTHER restaurant!" Her 4 year old's life would just be ruined, and everyone was aware that she was coming to the breakfast that day, and what was she going to tell them? The manager was so kind and just kept taking it from this ridiculous woman. I knew at that moment I could never work in that position because I would not have handled her the way that he did. He should get an award for dealing with this awful person. Sure we were disappointed, but ruining our childrens' lives, thats just insane! Anyway, off my soapbox!

All, in all we had an awesome trip, great weather, limited crowds, and no one in our family got sick this trip, which has not happened in a long time! Any questions, just ask, I'm sure I'll think of more later. Erin

Great trip report!

I agree about the "life-altering" situation at breakfast! I probably would have told that lady to get a life! What did she really expect the poor CM to do?

The one thing that is sticking out in my mind is that there is worn carpet already in an SSR villa! Geesh, the resort hasn't been opened a year yet.

Thanks for the report, ErinC.

We will be staying at SSR starting 2/26 and your report is very helpful, especially the bus info! I hope it's better by then, but probably not. We may drive more than bus.

I wouldn't worry too much about that carpet thing being a generalized problem with the construction of the Resort. It only takes one careless guest or one accident to cause a major blemish in an otherwise gorgeous space. Hopefully that's the case and not neglect on DVC's part.

One question for you. Do most of the rooms face DD? I have a map with the location of the current phase. What will our chances be of getting one of these rooms if we made our ressies 11 months in advance with preferred view?

Thanks again, Jim

Hi,

Great report!!! Thanks for sharing!

Allison

Great report, thank you for the attention!

I was hoping to ask how the noise from DD was in the evening? Did you hear the "Every night is New Years Eve" celebrations? Thanks again!

I can't WAIT to stay at our home SSR! We bought sight unseen a while back and I love hearing positive reviews. Sounds like overall, you had a good trip.

About the buses, you are not the first person that has said that they have heard drivers and others telling people to take the SSR buses to get to DTD. I am afraid it is going to get to the point where they will have to figure out an identifier to board the SSR buses. That said, we drive almost everywhere. I didn't stay at OKW, but was there with my niece for her birthday and they did stay there and I didn't like the bus system at all. The drive around OKW was really long to me since I was there with two small boys that I could not keep awake for the ride home since it too so long. (we would park there to be with our group and then ride together - maybe not 100% kosher, but it helped us to stay together and we were all on property guests). Trips to the MK would probably be our only time of taking the bus, except for now, riding the Monorail IS a highlight for our sons. :teeth:

We ate that breakfast on the same trip I just mentioned above for my niece's 3rd birthday in July and talked to the manager for a minute while we stood out front waiting for our turn. Everyone there was TOP NOTCH! I just can't stand people like that and probably would have said something in his defense. Poor CM.

Thanks for the report!

Thanks for the report! I can't wait to home to SSR for the 1st time in April!
I don't think they'll have the bus situation straightened out by then, it may be worse w/school vcations and or spring break, but oh well. I have 50 years of vacations ahead of me!

Thanks for all the replies. I really think that the bus situation will improve as SSR grows. For some reason, we just didn't get lucky this time. Several times we would be walking up to the bus stop and see the bus we intended to ride, driving off. But the Epcot night was frustrating, as I'm not sure that a bus was ever going to come. The DD situation really needs to be nipped in the bud now, before it starts to become a real problem. I will probably fire off an email to somebody whenever I finally get my suitcase unpacked! :p Like I said, none of this ruined our trip. I was just really feeling poorly for my Dad. He is having circulation problems, and the standing and waiting was really difficult for him. Of course since we invited them, I feel responsible for everything that happens on the trip. My mother refers to me as tour guide Barbie. I scored big points for the room view, and the Ohana dinner, but lost some because of the long bus waits!! :teeth: We like using Disney transportation while on vacation. Short waits are no big deal, but when they start to approach the 30 minute mark, that just gets ridiculous.

As to the carpet situation, I don't think that it will be a major issue in all the units. I just think that the installation by the bathroom door probably was not what it should be. I think that the threshold is a marble type material. The carpet would have to be glued or tack stripped at that point. It just looked like it is not holding well and then it has started to unravel. I would say the hole was several inches in size. I'm not sure what they can do to fix it at this point, other than rip a small section of it up, and recarpet it.

As to the noise at DD, we had no problems with it. Some evenings I could hear a light drumming sound in the background. It surely didn't keep me awake. I did finally catch the DD fireworks the last couple of nights. They are really short (I think somebody said 25 seconds long), the sound in no way bothered us. Frankly, Unless you just happen to be up that late, I wouldn't make the effort to stay up to watch them, they are really no big deal. JMHO

I would say that most of the rooms have some sort of DD view directly or indirectly. But some really have a garden view and a couple are pretty close to the parking lot. Of course when the Springs opens in a couple of weeks, those will not have a DD view. By the way, they were planting large trees at The Springs while we were there last week.

Alexander, I assure you that it took all I had not to let the lady have it at Breakfast. I did comment while I was standing there. I was waiting patiently to find out how we needed to go about getting our voucher for the breakfast at Electric Umbrella. The lady was going on and on about how she had wanted the princesses to present her daughter with a cake. THe manager told her that the princesses wouldn't have done that anyway, because they don't handle food. She then said "well it won't be the same just seeing them for a few minutes vs. an hour!" I then piped up and interjected "she doesn't get to spend and hour with any of them!" I just lost all control at the moment. The manager again explained that she only would of had a few minutes with each princess during her breakfast. I guess the lady thought that they were just going to camp out at their table!!! Trust me, it was worse than I can even put into words for this poor manager. I just felt so badly for him.

Sometimes I read posts on this board that imply that it's DVC people who behave badly but, of course, you can find rude people in any group. Thanks for the stories.

I was wondering who your guide was for the Keys to the Kingdom tour. I did the tour when I was there in January and it was great, well worth the time. It gives you a whole new way to look at MK and all of the other parks also. I can't wait to go back and do some of the other tours.

I also stayed at SSR, I had a studio on the second floor right by the bus stop, it was great. Sorry to hear about your lack of good bus transportation. We were pretty lucky with the buses for the entire trip. Most of the time we were went from the parks back to different resorts to eat, and then from there to DTD, so we could walk back to SSR.

Thanks for the report and sharing your trip.

Our guide for the tour was Brick. He was great. He has been with Disney for 15 years and has done numerous jobs for Disney, which made him an excellent guide. He could tell you about so many different aspects of the company. I've pretty much heard that the guide can make or break the tour. Brick made the tour! I would ask if you can request him for the tour.

HI,
Since I'm trying to decide on here to buy points in DVC, I was glad to read of your experience at SS. Thanks!

Its funny aobut the bus system. when I was last there (Dec), I found my friends really like to use the bus system to get around. I am really into having my car. I'm not really all that good about waiting in lines (Fast Pass, Please), especially when I'm tired at the end of the night and want to go home ::MinnieMo I think my friends were a little PO'd at me, but I said hey...since we have 2 cars, why not let me do what I like and you do what you like? I like the water trans and the monorail, but buses leave me pretty cold...oh well, just my opinion.

I worry that after only a year that he carpet is already wearing. I wonder if anyone would care to comment on the dollar value they think Dis is spending on furnishing/building SS compared with the older DVC units?

Finally: yep, rude people are everywhere but the CMs are equipped to handle these folks as part of their job...think of how much fun he had mocking her after she left!!!!! It is amazing how many people just can't handle the teeny little frustrations in life...I always wonder how they handle things when they ARENT on vacation. LOL.

Again, thanks for giving us a taste of SS. I've been having a hard time finding a small enough contract for my budget...but I know it will come.

very nice trip report.

for one i am also concerned about the bus situation. the telling of people to take the bus to ssr and walk over to DD is definitly going to be a major problem as soon as the summer arrives and the resort fully opens. they must address thsi issue a.s.a.p. before it becomes a problem

I have been a member since 95 at OKW and learned to drive my car around WDW. The only place I take a bus to is MK. It is just too easy to drive to the other parks and DD to bother with the buses. Perhaps you may do the same. :cool1:

Nice report Erin, thanks!

I didn't realize Ohana had a view of the castle. We've eaten there before for breakfast. I have a dinner PS for spring break there. Do they pipe in the Wishes music? I made an early PS time thinking we could walk down to the beach and watch it after we ate...

I usually see lots of rude people at WDW and I am one I have to really bite my tongue, but we didn't experience anything this time. I thought everyone seemed to be in a great mood, I thought maybe because the weather was so nice?

I saw only one instance that made me mad - a boy about five years old walked into a woman in one of those rented scooters. The woman FLIPPED. The boy's mom immediately starting apologizing and had the boy apologize, too. But, this wasn't good enough for the woman and she started ranting at them. I felt so bad for that mom! It was all I could do to walk away...
I know she probably was sick of dealing with crowds all day in the scooter, but to scream so ugly at a little boy who is probably not used to scooters everywhere. I dunno, it made me mad.

Anyway... :sunny:

Thanks for the report - glad you like my new "home" ;). I'm starting to see a trend in SSR reports where people are finding unexpected positives about the resort, and that the "perceived negatives" aren't that bad.

Yes, the bus service is all over the map; when we were there for Founders' Day last May, the buses came fast and were almost empty (of course, the spotlight was on SSR). Last Dec., though, we had a few long waits - usually when we were at a park (MK and AK come to mind) and we wanted to get to SSR. I'm assuming that it's a resource allocation issue (200 people waiting at the AS stop, 2 at the SSR stop, and only 1 bus at the moment) that will be resolved when SSR takes it's rightful position as Hella Big DVC Resort!

I was one of the first to comment on the DTD/SSR bus problem; I talked to a few Disney folks about it last May, yet it seemed worse than ever in December. Not sure if there's a real solution, as WDW Trans. is open to all with admission media....

Be well!
