Hi All,

Its been a long time since I posted to this forum. We just got back from a stay at the Dolphin. We arrived Monday, April 1 and departed Friday, April 5. This isnt' a trip report, just a few observations and tips. As background, we used Starpoints to pay for our entire stay (transferred numerous AMEX membership rewards points into Starwood points). WDW was extremely crowded during our stay (but expected, given that it was Spring Break). Participants included my wife, myself, and our 5 yr old daughter. We had made one previous visit with our daughter (age 4) and stayed at the Polynesian. We attempted to make this a more relaxing trip, just hitting the highlights at MK, MGM, and Epcot. OK, now for the observations and tips:

1. Checking in was no problem. If you drive, do not pay for valet parking. The self park lot is actually quite close. We drove up, unloaded at the front, and then I parked the car while my wife checked in.
2. The Starwood PG desk is not always staffed. There was nobody there when we arrived, but the Disney Cruise Line staffer agreed to check us in without having to wait in the regular line. She told us that there are periods when they do not staff the SPG desk.
3. The resort is beautiful, even though it isn't fully "Disney" themed. We thought it actually seemed cleaner and brighter than the Polynesian.
4. We requested a view of Epcot and the fireworks. The Dolphin delivered!! We had room 7017 in the East Wing - a perfect view of Epcot, Boardwalk, and the fireworks. I couldn't have picked a better room which fit our requirements.
5. As suggested on this board, we asked them to waive the resort fee - no problem. The Bell Stand has free USA Today's for people who still want the paper.
6. There was only one convention going on during our stay, and we did not notice a huge number of conventioneers. Most of the people we encountered were families.
7. We found the Dolphin to have better transportation than the Polynesian, unless you are only visiting the MK. Getting to Epcot and MGM was very easy and pleasant.
8. Access to restaurants is also much easier at the Dolphin.
9. The wait for MK busses can be frustrating. One morning, we had to wait for 2 busses before we were able to get on (they filled up). But here's a tip - if you are at the Dolphin, walk over and catch the MK bus at Swan - it picks up first and there are less people getting on at Swan.
10. The grotto pool was the best pool we have enjoyed at Disney (we've used the Polynesian, WL, and Dolphin pools).
11. For Disney related requests, the Concierge is very helpful. I found that they floundered a bit with any requests that weren't theme park/restaurant related. But they were very pleasant.
12. The Coral Cafe was only open for breakfast during our stay - you might check this if you plan on lunch or dinner here.
13. The Soda Fountain was swamped during our stay - and they did not have enough servers. Both guests and servers seemed at the limit of frustration during the one meal we had here - I think one server came very close to crying! You are better off finding quick food on the Boardwalk or at Tubbi's.
14. Contrary to some comments on this board, we did not find the size of the dolphin to cause confusion or excessive walking (as compared to our stay at the Polynesian, we probably walked less).
15. Check your bill carefully - we had several small charges that were erroneous (charged $6.50 for a bottle of water we never used, and charged for 4 sodas instead of the 2 we took from the mini-bar), but the front desk had no problem removing the charges.
16. Since we booked this trip at the last minute, we made no PS reservations. It wasn't so bad, however, given that we didn't want to be bound by rigid timeframes - however we have two votes for best alternatives: (A) Lunch at the Concourse SteakHouse in the Contemporary was wonderful. We didn't have a PS, they seated us promptly, and the portions are huge! Don't bother getting a kid's meal - the kids can share from your plates.; (B) Dinner at the food court in The Land at Epcot - lots of different choices, and the best tuna sandwich (on fresh baked bread) in the area.
17. A good break in Epcot is Mexico - ride the Rio del Tiempo (there never seems to be a line), enjoy the great A/C, and just relax!

All in all, we had a great trip given that we booked the trip only 4 days in advance! I would definitely stay at the Dolphin again - although we might try the Swan next time. Good luck to all!

These are great tips StevieD. My husband and I are book to stay at the Dolphin for the first time this coming Aug and were a little concerned after reading all of the negative stuff recently. Thanks for taking the time to post.

Nice to read a positive point of view for a change! ;)

I agree, the Dolphin is grand! Bright and festive in a superb locale!

We didn't find the Dolphin 'oversized' as some have reported in the past. Yes, it's larger than the Swan, but compared to all the walking you're already doing at WDW, it's just a drop in the bucket!

Thanks for taking the time to post your opinions!

Thanks for posting your great experience at the Dolphin!! Our stay there was a very positive one, too and hopefully will be again this June!!! :)

Thanks for the great post. We were at the Swan the same time you were at the Dolphin. We had a great time despite the huge crowds many days in the Parks. We figured out it was best to get to them first thing when they opened, do all the most popular things and leave by noon.
We spent the afternoon resting by the pool and went back in the p.m..

I agree with the Magic Kingdom bus being full. That was one of the highlights about being at the Swan. We loved being the first picked up and dropped off from the parks. The Epcot boat wasn't that way but we found getting off at Boardwalk and walking worked well too.

We did do a little laundry while there (we were there 10 days). That is a plus for those at the Dolphin. They could use a laundry at the Swan. The morning we were there it was quite busy and people didn't watch their time well and left clothes too long sitting. Frustrating for those waiting. Small laundry for the whole Dolphin and Swan combine.

You may not call this a "trip report", but this was one informative thread about the Dolphin!. I cannot tell you how much I appreciate your posting this. We will be there in less than a week, and quite honestly, I was in that panic-stricken mode after reading several negative posts of late. Your report has helped relax me and put me at ease with our upcoming trip plans.
We initially had Poly ressies, but cancelled them for the Dolphin.

Your hints and advice are very much appreciated. I'm glad you and your family had such a nice time. Welcome home.

Thanks for posting! We are going in 5 days and are thrilled to hear such wonderful remarks. We will be staying in a balcony room- I can only hope we get a view like yours. . MANY THANKS! MB

Thanks so much for taking the time to post this thread regarding your recent Dolphin stay! What a wonderful time you all obviously had, and the things which matter most (room/view/comfort & Fun w/Family) seemed to be delivered w/Magic! Thanks for the additional tips on dining, and relaxing in WDW. We too LOVE the concourse, The Land (At night the rotating character buffet-style dinner is spectacular!)-I'll try the Tuna sandwich for sure, and the River of Time attraction in the Mexico Pavillion (It NEVER is crowded-lol!). Your post is organized and well-written providing a delightful literary experience. Thank you, Again!:D

Great tips!! thanks. leaving in 6 days, hoping to get a similar room but havent gotten my room assignment yet, tried yesterday and the answering machine was on so i'll try monday morning and see if they can give me a hint!!!

dreamflight99 ... we are staying at the Dolphin first time, for one night before our 5/5 cruise. I too was panicked about all that I have read and even considered changing to the Poly. But, since we have always wanted to try the Dolphin, I figured this is the best way, it's one night ... if we like it, we return at the end of the year, if not, we book someone else.

That being said, can you reitterate for me what would be a good room to request? I don't know what the $149 cruise special will entitle me to re: view, but with my Starwood card in hand, I'm hoping for the best.

If you could even provide with a floor suggestion, I would appreciate it. Thanks!

It is so nice to hear positive things about the Dolphin. We're trying it for the first time in 3 weeks. We've stayed at the Swan our past 4 visits and I do recommend that you try it your next stay.

Your tips are great. I was thinking if we have to take the bus to MK to walk over to the Swan also. I recall picking up people at the Dolphin after we got on the bus at the Swan to MK & how crowded the stop was and that many people couldn't even fit on the bus.

My dh is going to drop us at the GF the 2 mornings I'm taking dd to MK. We're having breakfast at GF one morning and at Cindy's the next. He has to go to a convention those days, boo hoo, so I thought it would be easier for him to drop us at the closest monorail hotel.

Did you try any restaurants at the Swan? Gulliver's (dinner) is good, try it your next visit if you stay at the S/D. They have a character dinner there.

We also had experiences in the past with a few extra charges and never had problems with them removing them. Usually the folio is under the door on check out morning so you have plenty of time to review the bill.

Thanks again for the positive reinforcement, I know there are some posters who think we only like the S/D because of their special rates and that comment just irks me.

There are many special CMs we see over and over again at these hotels who make our trips especially magical. (maybe that's why they're understaffed at times, i imagine it can be hard to find so many great people:)

I would just like to add that the S/D became popular on these boards a few years back because there was a very special person listening to people who had bad experiences at some of DIS owned resorts and when they complained to DISNEY they didn't seem to care, so Mr. S/D picked up the pieces for them. Thanks again for your post!:D

The best Floors in the Dolphin (IMOHO), are the FAR EAST WING, with a Preferred View of EPCOT, anything from the 5th floor up. I prefer these floors, and anything in this area (as you'll read from recent posts) offers the BEST unobstructed view of the Epcot World Showcase and the illuminations fireworks (also Spaceship earth is easily visible from your window/sliding door--some have balconies, some do not--request one if you prefer this feature). I wish you a wonderful stay, and may request POLY assistance from you in the near future (should we dare to venture away from these fab resorts!). PM for anything else! :D

Although we are just back from the Swan ( great resort) firends of our were at the Dolphin on the 16th floor facinf the Swan. No balcony but an incredible view. They were there with the teacher rate and had made no special requests. Magic happens even when not in Disney hotels.

anyone been recently that can tell me if dolphin rooms have been redone or not?

The bus tip is a great one.., I didn't think of that during our recnt stay at the Dolphin and sometimes had to wait 30 minutes for a bus to the MK.

My question, is would the same ring true for buses to/from the AK??

I definately plan on heading over to the Swan for the bus over to MK on our next visit.
