Just back from Contemporary - disappointing!

My family of 5 just returned from a 3 night stay at the CR, June 9 - 12. This used to be one of our favorite resorts but we were disappointed by this stay.

We arrived very early on the 9th because we had just gotten off the Disney Wonder at 8:00 am. I wasn't expecting our room to be ready but we checked in anyway and asked if there were any rooms available. We were told our room was being cleaned but that it would be ready in a few hours. I asked about moving to another room, one that was available, but was told that since we were travelling with other families, our ressie was marked "DO NOT MOVE." I explained that we had been on a cruise with these other families, but we did not need to be together in the hotel and that I would gladly move if I could get into a room right away. They advised me to just wait for the room I was assigned to and said it would be ready in a few hours.

So, we went to the MK for a few hours and returned to the hotel around 1:00. Still, the room was not ready. I asked again to be moved to a room that was available now and they said to check back in 30 mins. This cycle continued all afternoon until 4:15. Finally, at 4:15, a Cast Member agreed to switch me to another room that was available right then.

I was happy to have a room because my kids were exhausted and were sick of hanging out in the hotel lobby after 3+ hours, but the room was awful. The location was awful....very back of the North Wing, 3rd floor, poor interior view, broken sliding door, etc. I might have been OK with this room if they had offered it to me at 10:00 am, but after wasting the whole afternoon waiting for a room, it was a real let-down.

Then, a few minutes later, I talked to my sister who had checked into the hotel around 10:30 that morning. She said her room was not ready at 10:30, but the Cast Member offered her the option of moving to one of several rooms that was ready immediately. Of course, my sister took one of the rooms that was available.

I was really upset and called the hotel manager on duty. I told him I wanted to know why my sister was immediately given the option of moving to another room that was ready right then when I was continually pushed aside, causing me to waste a whole afternoon in the hotel lobby. The manager apologized and agreed that wasn't right and moved us to a better room immediately -- a first floor room near the front of the hotel with a nice lake view.

When I went to the desk to get the new keys, the Cast Member made a snide comment -- something like "well this is the room you would have had anyway if you would have just waited."

By this time, it was almost 6:00, so we went to Epcot for the evening. When we returned to the hotel, the manager had sent us cookies and milk. It was a nice gesture and was appreciated.

I'd like to say that things got better from there, but they really didn't. The bedding seemed worn out. The bedspreads had holes. The bathroom wallpaper was peeling off. Housekeeping was almost non-existent. Our room wasn't made up until after 4:00 each day, and even then, it was sloppily done. The staff at the Food and Fun Center restuarant was unfriendly. Almost all of our encounters with staff were lukewarm to negative....not what I expect when I spend $300+ per night for a hotel room.

There were two bright spots though. The lifeguards at the pool were great. Two of the guys even got in the water and played games with the kids. Also, my son left behind one of the "prizes" he had won in the arcade, and when he returned to retrieve it, it was gone. One of the staff members offered to give him a replacement, and that totally made my son's day.

So, overall, it was not a great experience. I don't think we'll be staying at the Contemporary again anytime soon.

Any questions?

Sharon

The last (and only) time I stayed at the Contemporary we had a horrific experience. We were given a dirty room in one of the wing buildings. There was actually hair in the bed and mold in the corners. The mouldings were crumbling, the furniture was in awful shape. We were mortified. This was at 11pm so I laid towels down on top of the sheets and we went to sleep. The next morning we had a fit with the manager and others and were moved to AKL for the rest of our stay. Never again, not until the thing has been totally renovated.

Did you find the Food and Fun center to be nasty? We ate there once on a recent trip because my pregnant wife was starving and my 2 year old needed to eat something to. What a disapointment. The place is tiny, windowless, unadorned - there were flies buzzing around, and of course all the noise from the arcade. What a terrible place to eat. I would never have expected to find a place like that in a 'Deluxe' hotel.

I feel the same way. We used to LOVE that place. Our last stay really turned me off, too. We had decided to splurge over Thanksgiving week and stay in a MK view suite on the 14th floor. (We had heard how terrific it is from the DIS :confused3 ) It was a shabby and rundown as you describe your wing room to be. What a disappointment. The worst of it though, was this "fabulous" room cost us $1200+/night. :sad2: We couldn't move down to tower club as the whole place was booked for the holiday. I still have MAJOR regrets about that trip.

Sorry you had a bad time there, too.

Yes - dining in the Food and Fun center is not what you would expect in a Deluxe Hotel. I thought the food itself was OK, but we usually took it back to our room because it's not very pleasant to eat there. I understand that it's just a snack bar....but in a hotel that costs as much as CR, you would expect that the "snack bar" be a little more appealing.

I thought that the food at the Food and Fun Center wasn't bad, but I've eaten at hospital cafeterias with more personality than that place!

Oh, wow. I'm really scared about staying there now. :scared1: I really hope my group gets a renovated room in September. I'm kind of a princess: I can't handle things like dirty sheets and bugs and such... The whole food center thing doesn't bother me though. There are plenty of nice places to eat, and if we have to eat at the food center, we'll just eat and not worry too mch about ambience.

This truly breaks my heart because I have such fond memories of that resort the 2 x's I stayed there with my family. Always stayed in the Tower and always had good service.

One of the things my mother told me to do when I checked into a WDW hotel was to immediately call housekeeping and request that the room be cleaned by X. I usually asked for the room to be cleaned by 1pm. I also asked for extra towels, shampoo etc. And then I tipped daily.

I am really sorry to hear that your expereince was lousy. I guess we will wait until the place in completely renovated.

sounds upsetting to me....I switched plans from POR to CR but I haven't read great things about either lately!!!! Oh well. we are not hard to please and I requested a ground room and paid for water view...having never been in a "deluxe" I doubt any of my family members will care too much, but I don't want a dirty room. Especially for the price of this trip :earsgirl: Sorry it didn't go so well.

Remember folks you almost always hear the I did not like stories more than you hear the good stories. Been to CR twice and liked it alot and found it was good for our family. I did not go with high expectations or looking to find issues or expecting worn out rooms. I think sometimes we all can be very critical on these boards and are looking to compare things we see or hear here to our own vacations. I too have done it and then decided that it was not for me to start to compare, I was loosing the magic that way. Don't be nervious about any places in WDW and have fun.

Believe me, I didn't go there looking for problems. In recent months, I have posted many positive things about Disney and the CR. Like I said, it was one of our favorite resorts.

I am generally a very positive person and I give praise when it's due and usually keep my mouth shut when things are less than perfect, but this recent stay was really bad and I wanted to share my experience with the folks who were interested in my opinion.

I totally agree, understand, and feel the same. We have spent so much time (and money) at the CR over the past 12 years that my kids call it their vacation home. It was a real let down on our last stay. We have always LOVED that resort, that is where we are coming from - not to be negative because we had such HIGH expectations. I think when you spend as much money as the CR charges/night, you do have a right to have some expectations. They call it a "deluxe" resort, right?? We spent $1200/night for our run down room. Of course I have a right to be disappointed if the grout is black and moldy, the ceiling tiles are caving in, the wallpaper is torn, the walls are scuffed, the "wood" furniture is peeling, the toilet has a scummy drip...!! :confused3

Anyway, the place really needs some updating and repair so good thing that is beginning to happen. It is overdue.

Thanks for taking the time and giving us you experience. Sorry it was less than perfect. Appreciate reading all reviews for making plans and keeping up with how things at different resorts have been going.

:goodvibes I thought our North Wing room we stayed in last month was in good shape - certainly no major issues. I love the look of the updated rooms though. I always called when we left the room in the morning to request that it be cleaned by a certain time (like 2 pm - we have a napping toddler) and it was always ready. That is the ONLY time I've ever had my room cleaned before 5 pm (sometimes not even cleaned at all) at any WDW resort I've stayed in (AKL and POFQ). Maybe that is what you have to do :confused3

The food court was fine I thought - certainly just as fine as Mara was and I liked the food better. We had a problem finding popsicles/desserts that my 3 yr old could eat (he is highly allergic to peanut) and she had an entire case of Itskadoozies sent over from the MK and put in back for us. Really top notch on her part and much appreciated.

WHEW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

well, I will give you my review in 2 weeks when I come back.. we booked CR in hopes of getting a MK view...thinking that maybe the good outweighs the bad....
well, If I find these conditions, will they move me to someplace more to my liking???

will not tolerate seeing peeled wallpaper, sliding doors that don't work and mold & mildew in bathroom paying over $400 a nite..
if I wanted that I could get a sleazy motel for $29 a nite in Orlando

so asking, can you change?

Listen, I understand the point you were trying to make, but I don't think my expectations were too high - I wanted a clean room that wasn't crumbling and dirty. I got a room with hair in the bed, dirt, crumbling mouldings, etc. There is no hotel over 2 stars that should be that way.

Having just returned from the Contemporary on 5/11/05, I hope I can help. If you have a reservation in the standard wing room, pay extra for a tower room! Do not even mess with the standard wing, they are awful. We had a family of 4 chanting freaks above us that thought tapdancing in boots at 3:00am would be enjoyable for the entire hotel! After complaining for over 5 hours, we were moved to a different room in the tower. WOW!! What a difference! The beautiful room, EXCELLENT maid service, and convenience would be worth ANYTHING they felt like charging (true, we were upgraded for free, but in hindsight, would have paid substantial $$ to stay where we ended up). The Food and Fun Center is TERRIBLE!!! Do not UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE get the pizza or hamburgers! I took them both back, they were that bad. The nachos and french fries and refillable mugs however were great. The arcade is the BEST in WDW, hands down, and the Coffee stop (Contemporary Grounds) was fantastic. All in all, I would DEFINATELY stay at the Contemporary again, but only if I were in a Tower room. Don't be scared, just stay in the tower :)

I can't afford it :sad2: I am doing good to get a deluxe out of dh as it is!! oh well I will grin and bear it or maybe be upgraded for free or maybe ask to upgrade for a fee if I get there and hate it!!! Either way...thanks for your help, once again not hearing the greatest things about CR.

Our North Wing garden view room in March was very clean. The maid even left extra towels (I left a big tip the first day). We also had a good pizza in the food court, but most of the time we just walked to MK to eat counter service. I was very happy with our $199 AP rate. It was worth it to us to buy one AP so that we could get that rate during peak season.

To: Wonderwomandc,

Thank you for your comments! As I was reading the posts I was wondering when someone would defend disney and betsy did just that. Her comments were : "you should think more positive" or "don't complain or you will lose the disney magic." oh brother....if someone stayed at a motel 6 and complained about the service , I can see someone saying, " oh,think positive or you will lose the magic at motel 6 if you complain.....just try to look past the hair in the bed and the mold on the walls....after all, this is motel6! No one in their right mind would defend service that was poor no matter where it is.
wonderwoman, I hope you write a letter to a supervisor and complain. Your service was ridiculous for a deluxe hotel! That is the only way things will change. It is obvious there are "disney zombies" that will take any kind of service and say, " so what? I am at disney...how bad can it be?"
Don't get me wrong...I grew up at disney and I am positive and try to find the best in every situation but come on...lets complain when service is less than desirable to make improvements for others. I feel like you are complaining when you say they didn't make towel animals for you or didn't recognize your birthday but when you can't even get into your room all day and then it looks horrible, that is not complaining.
Sorry your trip wasn't up to "disney standards" and maybe one day it will go back to the way it was. :goodvibes
