Just Back from 1st Disney Cruise -- Details & You Won't Believe This!

RE

poor thing thinks its normal
I doubt this child really thinks this treatment is normal. As having been a teacher in some neighborhoods where 6yr. olds walk 5 yr. olds to scholl and 8 yr. olds take care of little brothers and sisters or cousins while mom is "out" , I know that kids do not think it is OK or right, they just know that is how it is for them, unfortunatley.

This little girl is well aware of what her mother did was not the norm as I am sure she observed other children getting their hair done with encouraging family members present.

It definatley is not judgemental to have an opinion-it is an opinion and in this PC world we need more people to have an opinion and express it when it comes to things that are just not right-and we all know it.

as for my opinion that a trip report highlighting someones poor parenting skills is "holier than thou" - sorry, thats my story and I'm sticking by it...if posting what those parents did is not a solicitation to berate "them", i don't know what is?

As for posting that I'm new to this board?, you may have me confused with another poster, but my DW and I have enjoyed this board for 2 1/2 years.

Anywhere you look you can see examples of poor parenting...On line in the terminal to board our most recent cruise, my DS, 6, befriended another 6 yr old boy...my DW said hello to the boy, whereby he confessed out of the blue that his dad sometimes takes off his belt and beats him with it....while my wife was horrified with this revelation, I certainly did not consider it fodder for my trip report...

i personally do not understand the criticism dizneeyore is receiving for her post from a couple of people. While you may not consider it 'fodder for your trip report', she chose to write about it. HER Choice. Should a new set of 'rules of posting' be made up? This is ridiculous.

Sorry, but i enjoyed her post and the visual aspect of it. I guess if you dont like it, just move on the to next post. That simple.

No, Alexandrew, did not confuse with the newer poster... :D

However, you did 'agree' with this poster, who did nothing at all in their post, and subsequent posts, other than berate another innocent person! That is what is NOT good for the boards. IMHO.....

All opinions, related to what happens on a DCL cruise, are WELCOMED!!!! Thanks AMY for sharing.

Alexandrew, While you did happen to have the one occurance that you mentioned... ( to sad for that boy!!!) My guess is that the incident did not even come CLOSE to having this family as dinner companions, and having to 'stomach' this bad-parenting throughout the cruise!!! ( I would have immediately tried to request a different table.)

And, If everyone will notice, the original poster had a LONG post, and only shared the 'you won't believe this' part until the last paragraph. What is so unfortunate is that after such a WONDERFUL experience as a Disney Cruise, this is what this particular poster felt like she should share.... Which, she is entirely entitled to do here on an open forum!!!

I agree with Bemily, when an innocent poster who shares a trip report is then outright berated for one or two 'descriptive' sentences... Jeez... It is getting ridiculous. What do we have here - the political correctness DCL poster police squad??? LOL LOL!

Here's what I am reading in all these posts: the implication in the OP is that the woman's looks, the fact that her husband was older, and her poor parenting skills were somehow related. And (not to put words in anyone's mouth), but I think that's what some people find objectionable. I too wonder what it added to a trip report to highlight someone else's faults? I think that's the part that one of the posters called "holier than thou". It doesn't feel right to me to do this, but as others have said, DizneyEyore is entitled to her opinion, and she has the right to post anything she'd like.

I thought the trip report part was super and that highlighting this incident was gratuitous.

You know, this probably should end. There is so much to talk about on a Disney cruise. Nothing was meant by it.

I bet the weather was really nice. Disney cruises are definitely addictive, aren't they? I can't wait for ours.

No one should be made to feel that they did a bad thing by sharing their trip with us. I, for one, wish I took more time and shared with you highlights from my trip, but it takes time to remember all the things and then take the time to post them.

Again, thanks for sharing your trip.
Tina :)

Bemily, just as you feel that the original poster should be able to report about whatever they want, I felt I reserve the right to reply about what I felt was an unnecessary part of her trip report...

I guess we agree to disagree...

Wow! I never imagined that my post would cause some folks to unravel. ;) My thanks to those that took my post for what it was and came to my defense. :teeth: I guess after all the time I've spent on public boards I should've known I'd need it with some folks out there!

For those whose delicate sensibilities were offended, hey, a description is a description -- the only reason I gave it was to further illustrate the woman's obvious self-centeredness (i.e., focused on her appearance, etc.). Get it? The hubby's age had nothing to do with it, aside from a sugar-daddy sort of appearance.

For those who don't appreciate my relating the tale, oh well. It happened on my cruise, I found it outrageous, I mentioned it in my report. It had nothing to do with seeking to "highlight someone's faults". It had to do with my not being able to believe that someone in their right mind would do that to their child. If that makes me holier-than-thou or intolerant in your opinion, again, oh well. :teeth: End of story.

Your post has me even more excited for our trip! Unfortunatly we still have 6 months to wait. Its alot better then the 14 months we had to begin with though.

I dont believe those parents left their 5 year old with a stranger who was braiding her hair, to go shopping! That just makes me sick. When I read that part, I hugged my 5 year old daugher.

Your description of the couple didnt bother me at all...if anything it made me be able to visualize the scene you were explaining.

As someone who writes as part of their job, I found your post to be very descriptive and therefore more interesting to read. If you can actually have your reader picture the scene as it is being described, you have done a great job of writing.
Congratulations on a great cruise and a great post!

Okay, I get to do my little talk AGAIN tonight.

This is a FRIENDLY board. We do not BASH other posters. FINE to disagree, just do so respectfully. Personal attacks are not tolerated.

i thought the description was accurate the woman was obviously a bimbo so she was described as a bimbo, maybe she went shopping to buy something so she didnt have to wear tight, tight jeans to dining rooms, and didnt find anything, she obviously spent more time on her hair and fake nails then on her daughter, so if you ask me thats a bimbo with no class and they got the description right, just keep watching your tv's because there bound to end up on jerry springer sooner or later.

DiznEeyore,

Excellent post!! The mother and father of the little girl should be ashamed of themselves, and have some common sense "knocked into them".

AMEN NEZY!!!
I was going to stay away from posting on this thread (although in my opinion, I thought the descriptions were great and I enjoyed reading the whole trip report...I hate to see others criticizing it because it will scare off other posters from sharing). But I can't stand extreme political correctness, and I was glad to see another person who feels that PC has gotten out of hand. This IS America, and I hope we still have the right to say what we please.

Coming into this thread three pages in, I'm finding the comments an interesting collection (OK, so I've been reading too much research lately about narratives)....

Storytelling is something that we humans have done for thousands of years - it is one way to pass on information. Back in the medieval days the storytellers used to tell their stories in rhymes, with great descriptions and elaborations.

Today, we exchange information electronically, and different mediums expect different types of information. These boards, and others, are places for folks to seek the "quick answer" - concise information. These boards are also places where folks look for stories and tales about traveling with DCL (and beyond).

There are many readers of this and other DIS boards, with each reader expecting certain type(s) of information and postings.

There are many contributors, each offering their information in a variety of forms - the quickie answer, the short answer, the paragraph, multiple paragraphs and the longer story. And we all know there are the trip report boards - places to go where we certainly expect to read long stories, with details and adjectives about personal experiences.

I think we all need to realize that not every post conveys the information we seek with the amount of detail we would like. Some readers want more, others want less, some want to post more, some want to post less. Some want adjectives, others don't. However we all need to be respectful of the privledge and opportunity to post and read in accordance with the posting expectations for communication on this board.

The DIS boards have a wonderful (and large) community - we need to keep the community strong - the occasional disagreement is not unhealthy to the community. In fact, what the disagreements do are help to establish and maintain the norms of communication that are expected within the community (research coming out here, can you tell?). This thread is showing various societal and electronic norms being examined - parenting, what info should be shared, what action should be taken, the form of storytelling, the type of info to be posted, etc. The discomfort many feel relates back to the multiple norms being discussed. So let's view this thread as one of those norm-maintaining/clarifying threads and move on to reading and posting about the broader topic at hand - DCL!

Yes, I am here procrastinating insead of working on my research, and obviously this post is way too long, but hey, this is a forgiving group ;-) (And the Disney store website loads way too slowly in my other browser window, allowing me too much time to write!)

you guys are getting away from the important fact what kind of idiot leaves there kid alone in another island or country by themselves. Advertising parenting skills or not someone should have notified the authorities. God forbid something happened they would be the first one boo hooing and suing the island disney the cops etc.,

Just wanted to add my opinion and say that I loved the trip report, including the story of the family. I couldn't believe the insulting responses which I think were unnecessary and totally out of hand; not at all what we have enjoyed reading on these boards.

What first struck me in the description with the fact that the "mother" was wearing jeans to dinner. I thought that was discouraged.

I am sure many people reading this thread were surprised that someone would leave their child alone OFF the ship, when I have read some threads about people who are nervous leaving their child ON the ship while they get off to site-see.

I just wanted to defend the poster and say that I loved the descriptions, necessary or not. :D
