Just back from 10 days at OKW

We just got in last night and thought I'd share some observations.

Also - meant to mention we rented a car for the 10 days but decided to use the ME check in at OKW the day of our departure. We had two bags to check as well as 3 golf bags. You have to check everything at the front desk at least 3 hours before your flight departure. They printed out our boarding passes and took all of our check-in luggage. DH was alittle apprehensive about his golf clubs but everything made it back to Seattle just fine. Our waiter at Olivias mentioned that this will only be free thru the 50th Celebration and then Disney will start charging for the service. So enjoy it will it lasts!

This may have already been discussed but there is just one Member Update meeting now. It is on Thursday at 3:00 at SSR. No big news at the one we attended, just general discussion about the latest attractions for the 50th B-Day. They did a slide show presentation and then a raffle drawing after. They gave away a DVC watch, spa t-shirt and DVC umbrella. If you're not staying at SSR and have no car it could be alittle challenging to go to the meetings now.

We liked the slide at OKW but it has certainly changed the mix of families at the HH pool. Lots more young families using the HH pool and possibly some of these were pool hopping. We wound up using the Turtle Pond pool just because more quiet and easier to get a table for your stuff. I didn't realize the snack bar was closed now. Is that just seasonal?

We stayed our first night at LBV suites (very nice for a late arrival) and checked in to OKW about 9:30 the next morning. Room was not ready so we gave Bell services our groceries and left for Epcot. Came back and room still not ready. They said the carpets had to be cleaned. Room wasn't ready til 4:30 but it did meet all our requests; non-smoking, non-HA, top floor so we were happy.

The DVC boat leaves once an hour now to DD until 4:00. Then its every 20-25 minutes. Maybe that's not a change but I don't remember the once per hour limit.

It was a great time of year to go with mild weather and few crowds. We only encountered mega crowds for the late night hours at Epcot and MK. We noticed lots more British guests this time. Spoke with a English man who was also waiting for his family to ride Mission Space and he said it was very cheap now to go due to the weakened dollar.

Only scary event to happen was seeing a little girl about two years old who had her head stuck between the iron posts on the iron fence around the Crystal Palace! She was laying there crying while about 4 Disney Security guards tried to get her out. Her poor mom was frantic but they eventually got her out and everyone cheered! Just when you think you've seen it all.... :earseek:

Thanks for the report! Sounds like an interesting trip.

Thanks for the trip report! What a nice length of time to get to visit :goodvibes Oh, I bet you wish you had not seen the little two year old :guilty:

It was alittle scary but more one of those things you see and ask " How the heck did she get between those fence posts!" I'm sure she will hear about that story from her family for years to come!

Another thing I forgot to mention; we really enjoyed having John as our waiter at Olivias. He's a tall, big guy with a great personality. He really went out of his way to get to know you and your family and make you feel welcome. We asked for his station every time we went to Olivias for breakfast and he took great care of us.

One time a teenage girl got her leg stuck in the slats in the wooden fence on the Frontierland Train Station platform. They had to use a crow bar to get it out.

Thanks for the report. What was your room #? What did you think of the location?

Thanks for the report JoEllen. Sounds like you had a nice time except for witnessing the poor child with her head stuck. Not sure about the snack bar being closed ? Hope that's temporary.

The great mystery...... The head, arm, leg, etc goes in easily but takes an army to get out!!!!!

Hey, I can sympathize. I was waiting for the boat at DTD to go to OKW and of course, it took forever to arrive. So, by the time I was totally bored and my legs hurt, I braced one leg on the railing at the boat dock and my knee went between the posts. Do you think it slid right back out again. Noooo! Learned my lesson.

Hi Debbie - We were in a 1 bdrm in Bldg #26, room 2621. We like being near the Peninsular bus stop but close to the HH in case we miss the bus!

Our room had a golf course view but the trees pretty much blocked most of the fairway.

Hey, we were in Bldg 25 in 2515 from the 22nd to the 25 last week-howdy neighbor!

Had a good view of the golf course this time-last time we were in building 36 with a view of the parking lot. Also had to wait until after 4 (I showed up at 10:30 and got the card, kept calling all day....) for our room to be ready-next time I show up at 10:30 in the morning I ask 'whatcha got ready right now' instead of being picky about being close to the pool.

The Passporter shows bldg 25 as smoking but there was no smoke odor in our room (thank goodness!). Did notice some butts out in the bushes on our porch-nice, smokers, thanks for littering.

Did you notice the security van always parked at the entrance to our cul de sac? I wonder what that was about?

We did use the main pool a lot and my two daughters spent about the entire time going down the slide over and over and over again. Phew! I didn't notice a lot of pool hoppers but I did notice that it seemed like everyone was tattooed! What's up with that!

We love getting Olivia's takeout through Good's to Go. The roast beef sandwich is the best.

Hi Robin

Interesting that you had to wait so late for your room. Wonder if another new procedure?? We noticed the security van as well and wondered about it.

What a great week to go! Did you see BJ Thomas at Epcot? We went to a 5:30 show and the place was packed! It was a great show and he still looked pretty good! (although he looked alot like Stephan Tyler, maybe the same surgeon??).

(snip)
When the carpets need to be shampooed, it takes a bit longer to get into the room. We have had this situation more and more at OKW. I always suspect it is because the folks who just checked out made a huge mess, or they are trying to get rid of smoke smell in non-smoking units. We have had to wait for carpets to be cleaned 2 of the last 3 trips.

We tried to get over to the concerts but decided that our kids (4 and 6) probably wouldn't sit still for it this year. We like to do the 'go on rides when everyone else is at parade/fireworks/show' thing, too. Last year I knocked myself out trying to get to where Paul James was giving his talk (I love his show!) but I was late and the crowd was out the door! We've been down during the flower and garden show for the last three years-I love EPCOT and I really love epcot during the flower show. We did do the Minnie's Butterfly Tent and everyone was amazed that the girls got the butterflies to land on them-heh, I poured some of the free soda on their hands just before and told the girls if they held super still the butterflies would land on them-woo hoo, it was a blast!

Our room definitely smelled like the carpets had just been cleaned. I wonder if Disney will ever switch over to Pergo?

It really wouldn't be practical. Laminate is not as durable as hard wood, and noiser than carpet. If you have ever stayed in a 2 bedroom unit that is under a GV, you will understand how much noise those hardwood floors generate! Pergo would be have the same problem.

I did a similar thing when I was a kid - got my head stuck in the metal railings of our staircase. Very talented! But I still remember it

Glad you're okay.

I have stayed at OKW once, but I did not get a refillable mug. Do they have them and if so, where can you refill them. Is it self serve or do you hand it to cast member for refilling?
Thanks!
