Just Back...and I really wanted to drink the DCL Kool-Aid

We did the Very Merrytime cruise in 2015 - early December - and really enjoyed it. The decorations are wonderful. I think you'll enjoy that. Have you cruised Disney before? I haven't been on the Wonder so don't feel too comfortable recommending it or not. Some people love the small ships - I'm just not one of them. If you haven't cruised Disney can you wait until your Fantasy cruise to decide about the Wonder? You might also consider the itinerary - if the Mexican Riviera is something you'd like to do, maybe don't cancel?

As far as the Oasis - my daughter (then 6) loved it. She loved the pools/splash area, the rock climbing wall, the Aqua Show, Ice Skating Show, and Cats. (The pools on Disney are horrible.) She also enjoyed the different dining venues. She even asked if we could go back on "that ship" - which she hasn't ever asked about ANY ship! I have to admit I was not a fan of the Oasis. I do like the big ships, but this was just TOO big. I have never been on a ship where there were long lines for breakfast buffet. I didn't like the Promenade - a bunch of stores that did seem like a mall. Central Park was weird...trees on a ship? And I really didn't like the feeling of being disconnected from the sea/ocean, which had been my worry before the cruise (NCL's waterfront does a great job of keeping you connected!). I don't think I'd go back on the Oasis (or Allure, etc.) but my daughter would! :)
We have not been on DCL, the upcoming Fantasy trip will be my son's first cruise ever. What worries me is that he is quite the adventurous little kid, and I'm not worried about the Fantasy, I'm also not worried about MSC, I'm still learning more about them, but it's an 11 night very port intensive itinerary. But, I am worried about the Wonder- by 10/17 that will be his 3rd cruise. I will be on a "complimentary" Carnival cruise later this month, but am not taking him bc I don't think it's the best ship for him, and I want DCL to be his first experience. I receive one of those complimentary cruises every 6 months, I've passed on all prior ones, but finally am taking advantage. Now, the latest one does include the Vista for next year, and that ship may be appropriate for him. So I'm leaving my Wonder booking in place, mainly because of the itinerary, but I am still going back and forth between an Oasis or Quantum class, the Vista (only Carnival ship that I would consider), and the Wonder. So, TBD.......

We've been on RCL Oasis as part of a big family group, and RCL Freedom, and did the Fantasy last year- even at a VGT rate our cruise on the Fantasy was almost twice the cost of Oasis- while we LOVED the Fantasy, it didn't blow us away- we basically LOVED the Oasis too. The dining room food and service for example- just ok, that sort of thing. Also the pool situation for kids -DD11 loves pools but no way she was getting into the kid soup. We loved Castaway, but loved Royals two private islands too. We actually felt the fantasy felt more crowded than the Oasis- I think because Oasis is so big to spread the people out. We loved the people on the Fantasy, the FE, shows, but for us, we will prob hold off on another DCL for a while, and do the parks for our Disney fix

(FYI the KoolAid reference refers to mass murder/forced suicide of men, women, and children in the 70s, by the way...I get how people use it, but it's actually quite an ugly phrase.)

I see you wrote a quick report about the room, but you truly didn't mention how much the noise bothered you. If you were in tears at 3:30, you should make your review of the room stronger, IMO.

Thoughts? What makes Disney Cruise Line "worth it" for you?

It's not worth it for us right now. We only have Royal booked right now, with the option of Celebrity in the future.

There were calm seas, but MAJOR vibration all night and MAJOR noise from the cabinetry in the room. There were points when I thought the ceiling was going to fall in.

Not everyone will mind that. It would help my husband sleep MORE soundly, for instance. I sleep with earplugs so it might not bother me at all. Plus, our first cruise was Alaska in the front of Radiance of the Seas, and the early morning we left the Inside Passage (something I wasn't expecting for some reason) it got VERY noisy up there. Dh was sleeping like a log so I had to "self soothe", reminding myself that nothing was falling out of cabinets etc.

Believe me you want to hear all those flexing noises. If the vessel does not flex, she will possibly break!

So true. My stinker of a then-brand-new-husband happily shared all of that with the Canadian couple we had breakfast with, while I saw there staring daggers at him because where was that explanation at 2am while I was scared out of my mind??? Gah. Spent years on oil tankers going up to Valdez but gives his then-brand-new-wife NO info while she was trying to sleep..... :)

Though the OP said they were in calm seas.

I now love the familiarity and that some of the staff remembers us!

FWIW that's not a DCL-specific thing. We sailed Freedom of the Seas in January 2014 then again in March 2016. Had the same stateroom attendant (apparently, in between she had been on a different ship!). She recognized us and remembered our names. Wild.

OP: In my experience, it's okay to not love something; life is boring if everyone agreed on everything. (I automatically assume I'll hate a city if my brother likes it...we only agree on Seattle, for instance. We are both very well traveled but just have different tastes. S'okay.)

There are those who vehemently feel DCL is overpriced. There are others who do not. I have been on many cruises and continue to return to DCL for the familiarity and comfort I feel when on board.

It sounds like the Disney parks are where you enjoy the Disney brand and perhaps a different cruise line would be your preference for cruising, which is great. Almost no one has an unlimited vacation budget so fortunately you realized what aspects of the company's entertainment divisions work and don't work for you.

Thoughts? What makes Disney Cruise Line "worth it" for you?

It made me sad to read your post: you clearly put a lot of effort into your trip and ended up very disappointed. From your review, it actually does sound like many of the more balanced reviews that I've read from guests that, overall, ended up happy with their vacations. What really stands out to me is that the noises in your room prevented you from sleeping at night. It's certainly not normal to have to go to guest services in tears in the middle of the night, especially since you've been on other cruises before. The disappointment of that and the resulting lack of sleep would certainly also affect my experience. You say that it may be difficult to convince your DH to go on DCL again. If my companion ended up feeling negative(?), I guess it would also have an impact on me. Overall, it sounds like you had really rotten luck with your stateroom and I am disappointed that DCL were not able to relocate you to another: perhaps that could have made a difference(?).

From personal experience, I really liked our 3 DCL cruises (all on Dream/Fantasy) so far. I am no huge fan of Palo either and we've had a couple of pretty darn awful MDR servers as well. I just booked two upcoming cruises that I am giving my two sisters from Denmark and their families. For my youngest sister, who has not been on a cruise before, I booked a Fantasy Eastern in February (1-bedroom suite). For my older sister, however, I gave them the option between a suite on the Fantasy or the equivalent on any other cruise line. I expected them to go with Fantasy, but they chose a much cheaper option on Royal Caribbean's "Allure of the Seas" which will be the first non-DCL cruise for all of us. Her family (party of 8) all love DCL's Dream class ships, but they just want to try something new. As for myself, I have mixed feelings about it, but I was shocked to see how much I could get for the same money on the Allure. I think I'll book the Fantasy again when they open for reservations for the spring of 2018: I love the combination of the family feel of DCL combined with the relaxation that complements our visits in the parks. On the Allure, I imagine I'll miss seeing all the happy little kids dressed up, but it will be exciting to try something new.

Seriously. We planned for months.
I wanted this to be the first of many Disney Cruises, and now I just don't know if we will ever go again. I love cruises. I ADORE DISNEY. Wasn't this supposed to be a great culmination of the two??

First, I understand that for those with kids under the age of 7, the kids clubs alone would make it worth the expense over other lines. BUT, for those of you with kids 8 and over, like us, what makes it good for you versus another cruise line? I am really genuinely asking because with all of the hype, I think we may have missed something.

Castmembers... how I love thee...
The Cast Members, with the exception of a couple, saved our trip. In true Disney fashion, they went above and beyond to make our trip great. After being in tears at guest services the very first morning around 3:30am, they sent a ship officer to our room later to make sure we were ok. Seriously, do not book stateroom 8668 if you want to sleep in more than 4 hour spurts. Then, later that day, they also left a bottle of wine and some arcade cards for us to enjoy. Like I said...they tried really hard to make sure we were having a magical time. But would the service have been just as good elsewhere?

The food...
We ate in the rotational dining rooms almost every night. We enjoyed each of them, especially Animators Palate. Enchanted Garden was our least favorite. We adored our servers, Jimi and Rudwin, but though the food was underwhelming. Everyone raves about Palo's Brunch...we found hair in the lasagna. The Palo staff were very apologetic. It happens and we didn't make a big deal about it, but I started to think that maybe our trip was cursed.

The shows - They were good...love the masked adult humor

Adult Entertainment - We really liked hanging out at O'Gills for NBA Playoffs and the games in the Tube

The ports - we LOVED Tortola. We went on our own to Cane Garden Bay and had the absolute best time! St. Thomas was just ok. I think that I would opt for an excursion next time we are there and I wouldn't travel there directly to stay for a vacation. We went on our own to Magen's and it was beautiful. BUT, I am more of a cocktail server with a lounge chair kind of girl, so we went to Coki. Little bit sketch...but still fun. Castaway Cay...I did the 5k and am not a runner. It was a fun experience, but I would suggest that you only partake if this isn't your first visit or if you can finish in a reasonable time. It really cut into beach time. We did the Castaway Cay Sandbar excursion and it was the highlight of our trip. Seriously, if you ever have the chance, do it. I have never seen so many conch shells or sand dollars in my life.

My bottom line...is it worth the extra $2k we spent to be on a boat with Mickey? (Comparing to RCL OASIS OF THE SEAS prices) I don't know. I was expecting to have tears as I left the Fantasy last Saturday, but it was the opposite. I left thinking that I could have had a nice room at the Poly with Parkhoppers for a long parks visit instead. IF I can ever convince DH that we should ever cruise DCL again, I think it would be on a European or Alaskan itinerary. I don't think I could get him on the Dream to Nassau, as our Sandbar Excursion guides said to skip Nassau every time.

Thoughts? What makes Disney Cruise Line "worth it" for you?

I agree that a lot of the dcl hype is their marketing. They are brilliant at marketing. A lot of people who post on dis boards are travel agents and therefore in a sense an extension of disney marketing. Trust your critical thinking abilities. If you are even questioning the value of dcl that should be a red flag. At the prices dcl charges there should be no doubt in your mind. Honestly, we have determined the price is not worth it. Especially if your kids are not loving the kids clubs. We continue to cruise dcl but much less than previously and only when we get a REALLY good deal (making the price more worth it). We also have two kids who really love the kids clubs. But we have another child who does not like the kids clubs. So that can be a problem. We are trying another line for the first time soon. I have a feeling it will make us even more critical of dcl. For us, other lines are literally half the price.

I just wanted to comment on the kids club portion of your post (OP).
Our DS who is 7 loves the clubs on DCL and I think he will probably still do so in a couple of years at age 9.
We have a DCL cruise booked for when he's 8 and I have no concerns. Even though he is into competitive sports at home, when I showed him the zip lining or rock climbing on the oasis (online) he had no interest. Whereas I can think of some kids my son's age who would definitely thrive more on rci. All kids are different. I think for the most part, what DCL does with the kids programming works. But obviously not for all. If your kids really enjoyed the clubs and never wanted to leave, your cruise experience might have been different.

We cruised RC in a concierge suite for a 10 night cruise and it was our first...I can safely say we were pleasantly hooked. We had issues with our room and the noises there, too. The pool was directly over top of us. And while there was no one in the pool, they were cleaning it and reorganizing the deck. They were dragging chairs around up there, and we could hear that loudly. VERY annoying. My one regret there was NOT having a white noise machine. The concierge was incredibly friendly and did what he could to help us. Including going up and telling the guys moving the chairs to CARRY THEM. But it was still too quiet in the room...and I could hear my husband snoring. Loudly. And so I didn't sleep. I definitely recommend white noise machines...

We also stayed in this room and heard noise from the bathroom area all night long......the kids still slept, but I was up every few hours from it. We still booked another cruise, but not that room!
SO GLAD to see this...Now I know that it wasn't just us...
Our 9 year old slept like a baby...but we were on 3-4 hour spurts the entire week.

I'm very nervous right now--I booked the cabin next to it after switching cabin 3 times. OMG, hope hope hope I will be able to upgrade at port.

Quick question about your CC excursion - could you snorkel/swim around the sandbar or just walk it? Debating between the snorkeling excursion(which is more $) or the sandbar excursion. Thanks!

I have always said, if anyone doesn't think DCL or any line is worth the money, then the best thing to do is move on to another line, (except Carnival)

Like you we love Disney, we stay mostly with DCL because of the over all package.....service, food entertainment, it adds up to the magic and pixie dust.

I especially like the vessels, they are better designed, better and safer built then I see out there. I love the classic liner lines and the theming.

We also love watching the kids, the joy on there faces and the interaction with the characters.

Guess those are the reasons it is well worth the extra money for us.

AKK

PS. We were in 8678 a month ago, no vibrations back then

There are a lot of people on these boards rhat have been happy with Carnival.
think its been posted here in various different forms.........The Disney Magic and pixie dust are all those things with the Disney touch is so special, add o that the classic vessels, , well built, designed and maintained, the excellent service, food and Disney only entertainment put the DCL cruises head and shoulders above the others. The Disney magic and pixie dust can only be found on DCL cruises. it brings ou the child in all of us just walking onboard.

I am so sorry that you had a negative DCL experience. It can be very frustrating to plan and arrange details and then when something (or many things) go off kilter, it puts a damper on the trip.
That being said, if you decide to try DCL again, you might want to consider a cabin midship or forward to offset those vibrations you experienced. We stayed aft on one of our earlier cruises and did not enjoy it as much as we enjoy mid and forward.

I have researched other cruise lines and have actually tried a Carnival cruise (it was a few years ago on an older ship) and then we started cruising Disney and cannot seem to stop. I don't consider that drinking the Kool Aid..as much as it is something we KNOW has been consistently good in service, cabin space, and entertainment for the dollar.
We are Annual passholders who live in Orlando and have priced out "staycations" at Disney resorts for the length of a Disney cruise and found that for our family of 4, it made more sense to to cruise than to stay at a Disney resort and pay out more for dining AND accomodations. We don't bother with the dining plan, as it is way too much food and we don't do character breakfasts and buffets as a rule on property.
So, as an example, we priced a Polyneisian Club level, Lagoon view for the same time frame as our 7 Night Caribbean cruise in September and it will cost us $5897.97. This is for room only and no park tickets or dining plan.
We will pay extra for 2 meals (breakfast and lunch are typically combined) so we are figuring at least 200.00 more per day so that brings us up another $1400.00. We are now spending $7300.00 for a Disney resort stay.
Our cruise is going to come in at 5200 ish for the same exact time frame. This includes cabin, food, entertainment and totally unplugging and getting away as a family.

That is the value for us. :)
I hope you try DCL again but in a midship or forward cabin. All the best!

I would be interested to know what category cabin you are comparing the Polyneisian Club level to. I haven't seen concierge priced at $5900 for a family of four in quite a while. You can't compare the Polyneisan to a regular veranda, that would be like me comparing the cost of the Pop Century to concierge. Apples to oranges. I could certainly get a room at the pop, dining plan, tickets for both of us for less than an inside cabin for 7 days. Its all what you like though so I respect your decision. I just wonder what we are comparing.

My room only rate on our 2015 Poly trip- with 30% discount was still over $4900. Not club level. But was TPV which is always higher priced than standard or lagoon view club level.

On our Fantasy/WDW combo this year we are staying TPV at CR -room only, before tickets, MM, dining etc is almost $3k for 4 nights- no discount for that week. Poly tpv would be over $3200 for those same 4 nights.

I think the deluxe monorail resorts, if staying club lagoon or higher, or standard theme park view, are very comparable to the cruise prices- depending on cabin. We are in a cat 5a midship deck 9 - regular verandah room, not the family one, and the price was less than our Poly room last fall. Once you add in tickets, dining, activities, the cruise is a lot less than than a WDW trip.

We are a party of 2 though. That doesn't have an impact on the resort rates, but it makes the cruise price seem relatively reasonable.

ETA- I just checked and the week I'm going is sold out, but 2 weeks later lagoon view club level is actually priced higher than standard theme park view. So maybe that fluctuates.
Garden view club level is $10 more per night than standard lagoon view. And is about $60 less per night than standard tpv.
A standard garden view is $200 less per night than standard lagoon, and close to $300 less per night than standard tpv.
So room selection has a huge variation of price points within that resort.
I don't understand paying $10 more per night to not have a view, but I can justify $60 more per night to not do club level and wake up to a view of the castle, but that's just my thoughts.

I have stayed club level at most of the WDW resorts. None of them compare to what you get on a cruise ship. The food and service offered at WDW club levels is nothing special and I've heard it's gone done since we have stayed there.
There is absolutely no comparing Pop century to a cruise ship. Pop does not have restaurants, health club, spa, water slides, or H20 products. Pop is just a room not even a very nice room and nothing else.

Maybe I didn't explain myself very well, sorry. While I mentioned comparing Pop to DCL my point was you can't compare Polyneisian Club level, Lagoon view to a veranda room on DCL. If your going to compare it at all you would have to be pricing a concierge cabin IMO. My comment about Pop was to get to the other extreme. We stayed at the Animal Kingdom Lodge club level last October and I can tell you the offerings were wonderful and the free drinks flowed. That is not a regular veranda room service. That is the concierge room on DCL. JMO.
If your going to compare what you can get for value and make a fair comparison you need to compare like to like.
