Ooooohhhhh! :worship:
Cheesecake, good; cookie, good.

I may have to try this recipe really really soon.

Yea Jill!! :wave2:

I'm glad I'm not the only girl around this TR with some love for the Duke boys. Yee-haw! Bo was my absolute favorite as a kid, but as I got older I realized he had the looks but few brains and I found Luke a little more appealing.

I had a metal "Dukes of Hazzard" lunch box and a huge "Incredible Hulk" Halloween candy bucket! They were awesome!!! ::yes::

I did like CHiPs as well. Erik Estrada was terrific as ponch! :thumbsup2

Oh yeah! My parents surprised my brother and I with a trip to Worlds of Fun when we were kids....if the rides weren't enough, we got to see John Schneider perform a concert. Best day ever!!!

I'm going to continue on my 70's/80's theme and say that you and Nebo are like Bo and Luke Duke to me of "The Dukes of Hazzard". I can tell you this.....the Duke I liked as a kid of five was not the one I favored when I was older. ;)

Well... okay. But I drive! Every time Nebo drives there's a hurricane or tornado or blow out happening.

Yeeeeeee Hawwwwww!!!!
12_7_25.gif

And now I think I can safely say I am off my early childhood show favorites. I can say that "The Incredible Hulk" and "The Dukes of Hazzard" were probably my two favorite shows as a youngster.....at least until "Knight Rider" came along!! :thumbsup2

What. No 6 Million Dollar Man or even Bionic Woman?

! I did  Bo Duke.

Don't forget about CHiPs!

Well my favorite Duke wasn't Bo or Luke. :rolleyes1:

I'm with you Sandy Mouse! Look on the bright side Pkondz, now you can have Sandy Mouse's share of zebra domes and my share of them as well! You won't hurt my feelings or taste buds. If I could afford it, I would air mail you some of them in a few weeks in a big dry ice packed cooler!

Mmmmmm..... zeeeeeeebraaaaaaa dooooooommmmmmesssssss.......

What? Sorry, must've drifted off there.

Hey Pkondz, you can call them "Candy Bar Cookies" or you can just call them what you have listed. All that matters is that they are chocolatey good!! :)

Done! Thanks! :)

I can't speak for Marie, but I think I want to tell her "Sorry"! Just so long as you don't pop up as me. I would hope folks around here could tell the difference! ;)

Ah. Saying sorry. Such a Canadian thing to do.

Sorry.

That was just in case things weren't confusing enough as it is.

Tomorrow, I become Marie the Librarian!

I would like to see this, too! :rotfl2:

Two Pearl or not to Pearl - Part 2

Hi-yo Silver, Away!
We mounted our trusty steeds and galloped off in search of adventure and fame! The sounds of the horses hooves galloping over the dusty trail was a perfect counterpoint to our hoots and hollers of excitement!

Well, not quite.

We arrived at Kualoa Ranch the required 30 minutes before scheduled departure time. It’s required because they have a gift shop and they have to make sure you have enough time to buy lots of useless crap that will be shoved in a closet and only re-discovered when you move or die.

Well that’s a cheery thought, isn’t it?

And am I the only one who thinks Koala Ranch? I think we have to go another 5700 miles to get to a koala ranch.

But we don’t care, ‘cause we’re going horseback riding! We’re all set. Everyone has a hat, and long or longish pants (a Kualoa Ranch recommendation). We’re slathered with sunscreen and… “Gather round the car, folks. Water bottles for everybody!” I’d stopped at a Walmart and stocked up on water for the week ahead and made sure we had plenty for the ride. I contemplated two bottles per person but couldn’t figure out how to carry them. Heck I wasn’t sure how we were going to carry one bottle let alone two. But we’ll cross that bridge when we get to it.

We walk up to the check in counter and let ‘em know we’re here. Yup, there’s our reservation and I’m having reservations on how to hold a bottle of water in one hand, a camera in another hand and the reins in another hand.

Boy I sure could use the prehensile tale from that monkey at Chinaman’s hat.

The nice girl at the counter was kind enough to help me out.
“Oh, no sir (There’s that sir again!), you can’t bring water bottles with you. You aren’t allowed to carry a bag or anything except a small camera.”

“All right folks! Let’s gather round the car again to put back our water bottles that I made sure we had just for this activity! Is everybody having fun yet?”

I’m really making a mountain out of a mole hill here. It turned out to be a mostly cloudy afternoon so thirst wasn’t a problem anyway. But I do wonder what they do when it’s hot and the sun is beating down on their paying customers and the riders start dropping off the horses.

We head off to the loading area at the designated time and wait around like cattle to be told what to do.

Like that? See how I did that? It’s a ranch, right? Cattle? See?

Okay, I’ll shut up now.

The people in charge were mostly young girls (around 20?) who seemed to know what they were doing. Eventually, we all got into a saddle. Coincidentally the saddles happened to be attached to horses. Kay was on Tzaziki, Elle was on Kimber, Ruby was on Blue and I got Atlas. Ah yes, Atlas. Greek mythology. Supported the world on his shoulders, I believe. Hey! You saying something about my weight?

Considering I was the only male of the four of us, shouldn’t I have been on Blue? I mean considering how parts of me were going to feel after a two hour horseback ride.

Just sayin’ :rolleyes1:

The good.

There were about a dozen riders in our group. We were at the end of the line. We had two guides. There was the first girl who I cleverly called girl 1. She was at the front of the line, so never did learn her name. At the tail end with us was Randy. Randy was terrific. She really made this ride great. I had asked her a few questions (Come here often? What’s your sign? Can I buy you a drink? Whoops! Skip that last one.) and she mentioned that she tried to be the kind of guide that she would want if she was on a tour. And boy did she ever come through. She was full of info about the different plants and what they were called, where they came from, how the ancient Hawaiians used them, etc. Towards the end of the two hours, she and girl 1 switched places and boy was she missed. Girl 1 didn’t say anything. Oh, hang on, that’s not quite true. She did say, “Get back in line, sir

We started off and after a few minutes we began passing these strange looking concrete blocks.
P1000054.jpg

Apparently they were a direct result of the attack on Pearl Harbor. The military wanted to ensure that the troups would have a place to shelter from an attack so all these bunkers were built. Supposedly they could still be used today… but looking at them, I’m not too sure how much use they’d be against today’s weapons. Interesting, but a little sad too.

We left the bunkers behind and were treated with some beautiful scenery. Well what’d you expect? It’s Hawaii for Pete’s sake!
P1000056.jpg

P1000059.jpg

That’s Randy in blue off to the left. Shortly after I shot this, she dropped back and asked if I’d ever had Guava right off a tree. I said no and she looked surprised and said, “Really?”

Yeah, we’ve got tons of guava trees in Canada. By the way, Randy, have you ever sucked on an icicle straight off an eaves trough? No? “Really?”

Okay, I didn’t say that… but I thought it. I wasn’t being mean spirited, I just thought it was kinda strange that someone in the tourist business would be surprised that someone hadn’t done something that’s pretty much relegated to the tropics.

So what does she do next? She quickly trots off over by these bushes:
P1000061.jpg

You can’t really see it in the photo, but if you look closely, you’ll see some yellow spots. Those are guava. She plucks four off the branches and gives one to each of us. Remember that there were about a dozen people on this ride? She only gave the guava to our family. I’m guessing it was the ‘What’s your sign’ line that did it. ::yes::

Show of hands out there, everyone who’s never eaten a guava before? :wave2: I look at this fruit and I realize I have no idea how to eat it. Do you peel it? Are there seeds? Is there a core? What?

I ask Randy and she tells me what to do. Apparently you eat the whole thing. Imagine a peach without the pit and you’d be fairly close. It tasted tart, but good. Especially considering we didn’t have any water.

You do remember the water, right?

This is how our family works.
I eat mine.
Ruby eats hers.
Elle takes a bite or two and decides she doesn’t like it… and carries it for the next 1/2 hour until Randy spies it and tells her it’s okay to toss it on the ground.
Kay takes one tentative bite and pitches it over her shoulder.

I’m not sure if I should feel annoyed or pleased… about either one.

We move on a little farther and I start getting a weird, disorienting feeling. Déjà vu. This place looks really familiar… but I know I’ve never been here before. What gives? Here’s what I saw: Before reading on, see if it looks familiar to you too…
P1000063.jpg

Figured it out yet?

The picture might not have the same effect on you as being there did on me. In one of the Jurassic Park movies, there’s a scene where the professor (and Mary Anne… sorry wrong show) and the kids huddle behind a log while a herd? flock? gaggle? bunch of dinosaurs runs over and around them. This is the meadow where it was filmed.

The bad.

After living happily during the last 48 hours or so, my camera battery decided now would be the best time to give up the ghost. Just as we were getting to the best part of the tour!

D’oh! So much to show you and so little to show for it.

Luckily, none of the DDs brought their cameras with them either. :sad2:

Here’s a rundown.

We were shown an area where a scene was filmed for Lost.

There’s a scene in Windtalkers where Nicholas Cage is filmed overlooking the battle scene from a high cliff. We saw the “high cliff” it was a little rise about 10 feet in height.

We saw the view from the closing scenes for both Mighty Joe Young and George of the Jungle.

We saw props left over from Mysterious Island (the new one, with The Rock).

And my two favorites:

There were three shallow giant footprints from 1998s Godzilla. Shallow? Didn’t Mathew Broderick fall in one? Apparently they were originally about 6 feet deep. But the cows kept falling in and couldn’t get out. :lmao:

The roadway where Adam Sandler tries to meet, and re-meet Drew Barymore in 50 First Dates… including the bushes where she beats up Rob Schneider with a baseball bat.
Love that movie. Not as good as The Wedding Singer… but good.

The ugly.

We’re about an hour and a half into our ride and heading for home when it happens. One of the horses up ahead shies from something and another nips at it or kicks it. Not sure exactly what precipitated it, but the result was one horse getting spooked and running off.

Now these tours are meant for people with limited to zero experience on horseback.

The horse takes off and I can see that the young man in the saddle is starting to lean farther and farther off to the left. The guides are trying to yell instructions as they gallop off in pursuit, but it’s too late. The guy is thrown from the horse and lands heavily on his side. Luckily, for being thrown, he does exactly the right thing… he kicks his left foot out of the stirrup and so prevents himself from getting dragged.

He was a little banged up (scraped knee and hand, I believe) but otherwise seemed okay. The guides offered to have a jeep come and take him the rest of the way, but he declined and clambered back on the horse. I gotta give the guy credit for having the guts to mount up again.

As the end of the tour approached, so did the hardest part. Getting off the horse after sitting in one position for the last two hours.

I walked funny all the way back to the car… but nobody was laughing. Well nobody was laughing with me.

...

We drove back into Honolulu and headed out for supper. Ruby had picked the evening’s restaurant and she had decided on The Cheescake Café. If you’ve never been to one, it’s just like you imagine… except bigger. We don’t have one in Winnipeg, but had eaten at one in Alberta and another in Vegas… see a trend here?

Traffic in Honolulu is insane. The only thing more insane is thinking that you’re going to find a place to park. I told Ruby to jump out and try to get us a table and I’d go park. I found a parkade a few blocks away and hurried back to the restaurant.

Ever been to one of the places where they give you a buzzer? If you’ve dined in Disney you know what I mean.

There was a line up just to wait to get a buzzer. By the time I’d parked and returned to the Cheesecake Café, 20 minutes had gone by. Ruby told me to go up to the desk and get a buzzer. I dutifully head over to the desk, passing about 100 people in line and tell the harried hostess who hurriedly hands me a buzzer. We wander back outside to serve our sentence.

While we’re waiting outside, we keep hearing a bell ringing. I look over and see a pick a pearl kiosk. Hey! Just like Japan in Epcot! Cool! I wanted to do that last time we were in Disney, but the girls were (IMHO) too young. We sashay over and the young girl at the counter explains that we can pick a prize which will be 10 to 40 percent off a pearl. No obligation.

Kay picks a prize and “wins” 40% off. The pearls are only $12 so it’s not a huge prize… but still it’s about $5 off. Kay picks her oyster. Interestingly enough, I’ve read on the DIS that the best oysters are the ugliest ones, and the girl at the counter says the same thing. Kay picks a butt-ugly oyster… and sure enough she gets a really nice black pearl. If she had a choice, it’s what she would’ve picked so… score! Pearl girl rings a bell in triumph. That’s where the bell ringing comes from. Every time some sucker… um… I mean lucky customer gets a pearl, she rings her bell announcing the lightening of a wallet or purse.

The pearl girl oohs and ahhs over the pearl, polishes it up then drills a hole in it “in case you want to mount it.”

Uh huh.

“Did you want to mount it? Here are some nice silver mounts.” The mounts are around $50. I let Kay pick one… every time we go on a vacation, Ruby and/or I will buy one gift for each brat. Anything else that they want… they’re on their own. So Kay picks her mount… but now she needs a chain, right? Total cost for her $7 pearl? About $85.

The pearl girl turns to Elle and asks if she’d like one too. I say, no. The pearl girl says Elle can have one for free! I tell Elle that I’m not buying a second mount and chain. Elle replies, “That’s okay, I saw a nice cage for a pearl for $12.

Oh. Now you tell me.

Elle gets a nice pink pearl. Again, it’s exactly what she wanted.

Our buzzer goes off and we head in for dinner. Again, no food porn pictures. No camera battery right?
Ruby and Elle share a Chicken Caesar Salad, I have a cheeseburger and I can’t remember what Kay had. For dessert Ruby and Kay split a vanilla bean cheesecake while Elle and I dive into a raspberry chocolate truffle cheesecake.

Fully sated, we stagger back to the car and head back to the hotel. We have an early morning coming up the next day, so this one is done.

Coming up: Surf and Sharks

Yeah, I think it's best that you drive as well, considering Nebo's track record and all.

What. No 6 Million Dollar Man or even Bionic Woman?

You guys really aren't helping me let go of the 70's/80's fixation, are you? Yes, both of these were good too, but I also liked Wonder Woman as well.

Well my favorite Duke wasn't Bo or Luke. :rolleyes1:

Oh yeah, I get it. You mean Uncle Jesse was your favorite Duke, right? ;)

Ah. Saying sorry. Such a Canadian thing to do.

Sorry.

Boy, Nebo is gonna gag for real when he reads all of the Duke boys and CHiPs stuff!!! And he thought it was bad around here when I was giving you compliments!!!:rotfl2:

Semi-lurking (old habits are hard to break), but still really enjoying your report (even the parts without pictures)! Can't wait to see/read about what happens next...popcorn::

Pkondz, great chapter! I was really hoping you would have a mention of "LOST" in the chapter. My first thought of the picture wasn't "Jurassic Park" though once I read your explanation I remembered the scene. My first thought was of the island where Jack, Kate, Locke, Sawyer, Sayid, and Hurley hung out.

Hawaii looks so beautiful! And score on the guava au natural!

I believe I would also be a little movement impaired after being on a horse for two hours!! Er, not exactly the same, but I bet it would be awkward!! :sad2:

Can't wait for the next installment, but no rush, it's fun around here! ;)

You guys really aren't helping me let go of the 70's/80's fixation, are you? Yes, both of these were good too, but I also liked Wonder Woman as well.

Me too!!!! Possibly for different reasons.

Oh yeah, I get it. You mean Uncle Jesse was your favorite Duke, right?

:rotfl2: I knew it! I knew if I just left it at that, someone would say Uncle Jesse.

And for the record.

Yes. Uncle Jesse.

Boy, Nebo is gonna gag for real when he reads all of the Duke boys and CHiPs stuff!!! And he thought it was bad around here when I was giving you compliments!!!:rotfl2:

My liking Uncle Jesse was a compliment? I don't think I want to get on your bad side.

Maybe I'm already there. :scared:

Nope you are good Pkondz. Nebo is too, it's just fun to be able to tease him a little. We have to try to keep him on his toes sometimes!

Since Nebo is back and doing the break downs, no need for me to do them. :woohoo: Besides, I wasn't doing a very good job keeping up with them. Busy time of the year for me at work. Imagine that, having to do work at work. The nerve of them. :sad2:

Can't say I've ever eaten a guava. And surely not straight off the tree.

Is the Cheesecake Cafe like the Cheesecake Factory? I googled it :surfweb: and see the Cheesecake Cafe is in Canada. I've been to Vegas several times and have never seen a Cheesecake Cafe. I've been to the Cheesecake Factory over there.

You know they do sell extra batteries for camera's. Just a suggestion for the next trip.

Elle, you dropped the ball girl. You got some good pics from the car. Imagine the good pics you could've gotten while on the horse. You know you can't trust a man to do everything. Oh wait, I am a man. Umm, let me rephrase that. You know you can't trust your dad to do everything.

Great chapter. See you haven't lost any readers yet. Hmm, come to think about it, Lady H hasn't replied in some time. I may have spoken too soon.

Well my favorite Duke wasn't Bo or Luke. :rolleyes1:

Mine either.:goodvibes Or Jesse or even Cooter for that matter. :rolleyes1

I'm never going to get off the couch.

Hi Lisa! Funny, just last night I checked your ticker to see if you were gone to the World yet. Getting close. Thanks for checking in, and glad you're liking it. The comments from people like you are what keep me going. I keep thinking, "Who in their right mind wants to read my random ramblings?"

Who, me? Insecure?

Lots more photos in the upcoming chapters.

I never watched Lost... even though I've heard lots of good things about it. It was a casualty of too much TV, too little time.

Randy did point out an area where in Lost a jeep (I think she said a jeep) came over a hill. The tracks were visible for a while after. One person on the ATV tour decided to recreate that and chewed up the hill with his own set of tracks. :sad2:

Hawaii looks so beautiful! And score on the guava au natural!

It is pretty cool.

I believe I would also be a little movement impaired after being on a horse for two hours!! Er, not exactly the same, but I bet it would be awkward!! :sad2:

Same... yet different.

Can't wait for the next installment, but no rush, it's fun around here! ;)

Can't wait? Hope you're not easily frightened.

heh heh heh

Nope you are good Pkondz. Nebo is too, it's just fun to be able to tease him a little. We have to try to keep him on his toes sometimes!

Yeah, he's a slippery little devil, isn't he?

Since Nebo is back and doing the break downs, no need for me to do them. :woohoo:

Bailing out, are we? Hmmmm?

Besides, I wasn't doing a very good job keeping up with them. Busy time of the year for me at work. Imagine that, having to do work at work. The nerve of them. :sad2:

Doing work... at work? How novel.

Actually I was busy today too. So I hear ya. No worries, you did just fine.

Can't say I've ever eaten a guava. And surely not straight off the tree.

That's two for two.

Is the Cheesecake Cafe like the Cheesecake Factory? I googled it :surfweb: and see the Cheesecake Cafe is in Canada. I've been to Vegas several times and have never seen a Cheesecake Cafe. I've been to the Cheesecake Factory over there.

D'oh! Yes you're right. It is the Cheesecake Factory. My bad. Now I wonder if I should change it and confuse the heck out of people about this post or leave it and have people mock me.

I'm used to the mocking so that would work. Whaddya think? Change it or leave it?

You know they do sell extra batteries for camera's. Just a suggestion for the next trip.

Not this kind. It's one of those weird rectangular ones that you couldn't find at the local store. Certainly not at a ranch... and definitely not one hour into a horseback tour.

Great chapter. See you haven't lost any readers yet. Hmm, come to think about it, Lady H hasn't replied in some time. I may have spoken too soon.

Gone! Gone but not forgotten. I picture myself in a large empty room calling out, "Is anyone out there?"

Mine either.:goodvibes Or Jesse or even Cooter for that matter. :rolleyes1

Check. Boss Hogg it is.

Oh, and be vewwy vewwy quiet, I'm hunting Ponzi's. Didn't think I saw the bunny comment did you.

Oh, shoot! No! Wait! Don't d... <BANG> aarrrgghhhhh.....

Heads up! and tummies forward...
I've posted links to all the cookie recipes on post #2. If I've missed anyone, let me know. Buzz, I didn't know the name of your Christmas cookie recipe, let me know what it is and I"ll change the title.

That is all.

Oh man. I've been busy at work and now I feel like I'm late to the party. I have cookie recipes! Can I still post them?

Ponzi, i won't get a chance to respond to your latest entry until tomorrow but I hope to bring my C game.

Well... okay. But I drive! Every time Nebo drives there's a hurricane or tornado or blow out happening. Or tires leaking or exhausts falling apart or he's turning around to go back and get something or he's taking narcotics as he's driving with his knees, or he's making us answer stupid trivia games he either made up or put on CD, or he's almost hitting Bambi, or he'e yelling "Look ma, no hands" going through the Smokies, or he's blind inside of the mountain tunnels in the Smokies, singing, "Inside of "Ol Smoky", or he's....

somebody could stop me, you know?

Well my favorite Duke wasn't Bo or Luke. :rolleyes1:

I never watched the show, but I do have a recollection of a belly button, ala Dawn Wells, am I mistaken and my naval maneuver memories mostly are misplaced?

Done! Thanks! :)

Ah. Saying sorry. Such a Canadian thing to do.

Sorry.

Oh yes, that Raffi Torrez from Vancouver was always saying he's sorry as he'd put another Blackhawk in the ICU ward.:sad2:

I was thinking maybe:

Sheriffff Rosco P Coultrain OR maybe Couter the mechanic? Maybe Boss Hogg??? Nah Ponzi has too much class for Boss Hogg.

Man am I glad I wasn't the first one to show my age here (well maybe I was with the whole Gilligan's Island reference (and that my friends started in the 60's so imagine where I'm coming from. Also

I will give my best Lemon Bar recipe to ANYONE who can name all 6 of the Walton kids... Ready.... Go!:happytv: OH AND NO GOOGLING or other types of look ups on the World Wide Web!

Hey Thumper man, help me out here:
You were doing a great job having breakdowns, please, don't stop because of me.
I just like picking out a few things and insulting Ponzi on them, that's all I'm good for.
I also can't sit here very long without my back throwing up again, and If I DO try to post a shortened report on our last trip,,, it's really going to b e a back challenge, so take apart Ponzi any chance you get, tell Lady H to do it too.

I do think that doing another would be over kill right now, what can I possible have to tell that I haven't already? And Ponzi is doing a great job.

Laura has a great report going herself, along with Shannon, so I'm not sure yyou don't need something else to have to keep up with.

I don't know, I just hate to see you waste good sarcasm when It could be directed at Ponzi.

Well, little Buckeroo, you carry your water in your handy dandy canteen slung around the saddle horn.
