Just A Little Vent

I probably would've just chalked it up to the CM having a bad day and moved on. But I would've been sorely tempted to work "AP" back into the phone call about 10 more times, too. :stir:

We discuss things with the acronyms all the time. Also I'm an engineer working for a military project so its even worse. There are many designations that are known by acronyms sometimes even by just numbers - for example a 29 (two nine, not twenty nine when spoken)
I especially love the acronyms where one of the letters is the first letter of another acronym...

Epcot is not an acronym any more. It was turned into an "imaginary word" by Disney and the "all caps" were dropped some time ago. Due mostly to the fact that it really never was going to be an experimental prototype community of tomorrow. The park is referred to as Epcot, not EPCOT. So I imagine the CM calls it "Epcot". :rolleyes1

Oh I know that and was trying to interject some sarcastic wit which by the looks of it failed. :goodvibes

on ABC and ESPN doesn't matter... from what I read CM said disney doesn't use acronyms, and they use ABC and ESPN, which are acronyms.

and the boardwalk thing... was just creating a fictional script of what someone might say on the phone. If there's one restaurant in town called Smitty's and it's on Elm street, someone might say "How long would it take to get from Smitty's on Elm to the Medical Center" (b/c if you've ever had smitty's burritos). but kudos for dissecting my exaggeration (?) ploy?? :thumbsup2
The Entertainment and Sports Programming Network calls itself ESPN, and identifies its affiliated businesses with the same letters. One of those businesses operates by agreement on Walt Disney World property. That venue is named, called, known as, however you wish to phrase it as ESPN Club - not Entertainment and Sports Programming Network Club. Therefore, Disney Cast Members call it by its name: ESPN Club.

Disney named a counter service restaurant ABC Commissary. They didn't name it American Broadcasting Company Commissary then instruct or allow Cast Members to call the venue ABC Commissary.

The theme park with Tower of Terror, Toy Story Midway Mania, The Great Movie Ride, etc., is currently called Disney's Hollywood Studios. We call it HS or DHS or whatever. Cast Members use full words. When the park was named MGM, they called it MGM. Do you see the difference between a company assigning a name to a business, and consumers choosing their own acronyms?

If there's one Smitty's in town, and the burritos are that bad, it would make more sense to use as few words - and so as little time - as possible to get directions to the nearest hospital.

Okay. I don't understand why everyone ls arguing over acronyms?

The cm stated Disney didn't use any acronyms. She didn't place a clarifying statement.

Obviously , they do. Not necessarily the ones we, or anyone else does, or to the public .

But they do . Why the debate over which ones?

Back on topic. Especially with the message board comment, we can assume she was exaggerating, maybe from a bad day. I've done it before.

Human, but definitely unnecessary.

They are still acronymns, and Disney not only uses them, but they named establishments on their property after them (and they own the companies who go by the acronyms)... so Disney does use acronymns (in response to the seemingly condescending tone of the CM... nothing more, nothing less)

and I looked up the definition of acronym, and per merriam webster, it is...

"..: a word (as NATO, radar, or laser) formed from the initial letter or letters of each of the successive parts or major parts of a compound term; also : an abbreviation (as FBI) formed from initial letters..."

so if radar and laser are acronyms per "Websters", so epcot also remains. :thumbsup2 and AdLib, for that matter

this guy is watching an acronym :happytv:

I'm sure if the Cast Member who caused this thread ever becomes aware of its existence, she will truly regret not interjecting the apparently necessary term "guest-created" just ahead of the word acronym.

eta: ad lib is the shortened version of the Latin ad libitum. Capitalizing each part of the phrase and running the words together doesn't make the phrase an acronym.

I hate acronyms and would never dream of using them outside of a message board. I find them obnoxious. I see through your story, that I am not alone....

dont know what that is supposed to be but whatever - maybe you are the CM who I spoke to. hope your day gets better, too.

I know it is your goal in life to argue and insult your way through everything, but please be real. I (or most of the people here) dont say MVMCP, MK, DS, etc. Even the person at Member Services who sold it to me called it an AP. It is not that far-fetched. You always come across so unhappy. I truly feel sorry for you.

AdLib, as used above in the thread, is an acronym for Adventureland / Liberty Square.

per Webster...

: a word (as NATO, radar, or laser) formed from the initial letter or letters of each of the successive parts or major parts of a compound term; also : an abbreviation (as FBI) formed from initial letters...

the proper course for the CM wouldn't have been to simply interject "guest-created". It would have been to say STEO "I'm sorry, I don't understand what you mean by that". We all understand s/he (and everybody) knows what ESPN and ABC are but may not know what AP or MNSSHP stand for, but it just could have been handled a bit better. When you act snarky, you tend to get snarky responses (spelling out the words behind the acronyms ESPN and ABC).

Really? She chastised you? Perhaps she was merely stating the truth. Most CMs do not frequent message boards, therefore they are not familiar with acronyms (especially those used on this site). It seems to me she was attempting to clarify, not chastise.

Her statement was true. Disney does not use acronyms. I believe she was just attempting to be specific with you.:)

There is a difference in friendly correction and being ugly. This was not a friendly correction at all. I am not that sensitive. ;)

Just curious as to how old that CM was

Not that it really makes a difference, but my wife and I are in our late 40's and we use acronyms all the time in conversation - when we text...... ;)

Of course it is hard to tell by a voice, but I immediately thought she was a college student. Maybe she will LOL with her friends and SMH when texting, but it offends her when it is work related?

And maybe she was hoping you would get the word out that we should use the full words when we call in, just so there is no confusion.

I would never call and say "Hi there ! My DH, DD, and DS are planning a trip to WDW this fall. We all need APs and need help making our ADRs. Plus we want to use the ME to get to AKL where we are staying. Could you help us plan our trippie?" Given how many acronyms we use on the Dis, I'm sure it is more than a little confusing when people call in and shorten everything down.

Again, ridiculous.

A CM has no business chastising a customer, liking or disliking ancronyms is not even the point!

I can tell you first hand tho, I've spoken to two different CM in guest relations who have told me they don't like DIS because of misinformation??? They just don't get how much business this board brings Disney!

I wouldn't have put up with that I would have asked for a manager!!

Sent from my iPad using DISBoards

It is not something that would make me quit going. She was out of line and if her call was being monitored, I am sure they will let her know about it, but I was really just venting. I didnt get bent out of shape about it.....

But, funny they would mention misinformation to you, because CRO gives more incorrect information than any other source I have found to date. :)
