Just a fluff comment about Mariah Carey

I was reading "People" magazine on Friday and noticed that Mariah Carey claims to be turning 37 this year. She is not 37. Ask me how I know --

An old friend of mine went to Harborfields High School "with Mariah Carey." Which is to say she was in the same building at the same time as Mariah -- she didn't know Mariah and said Mariah was a year or two behind her. My friend is 44. Even if Mariah was in 10th grade when my friend was in 12th (when I lived on Long Island, junior high went from 7th to 9th grades and high school went from 10-12th grades.) that still makes Mariah Carey 41 or 42.

Not really important -- I was just surprised that she shaved so much off of her age.

Hmmm...well, they must have been lying about her age for a long time. I am 42 and I remember Mariah Carey during her "first" bout with success. At that time I was probably in my mid to late 20s and she was younger than me (or so they said at the time).

According to everything I can find, supposedly she was born on 3-27-70, which would make her 36...so there's a lot of stuff not right apparently.

Imdb.com has her birthday as today, born 1970, which would only make her 36. I guess she can't decide how old she is LOL.

Their publicists are very savvy in keeping them within a certain age bracket as long as they "can"...

I went to college with Keith Sweat and I was about the youngest person there, got there at 16 and graduated at 20. When he came to visit my radio station about 10 years ago I was 39 and his publicist sent us paperwork that he was 29!!!

What got to me is a co worker looked at me and told me I WAS THE LIAR!!??? Why in the blue blazes would I LIE to brag about Keith Sweat????? I could see if it was Paul McCartney but KEITH SWEAT???? Yeah, sweet cheeks, it was ME that was the liar here....

a quick search for mariah carey bio turned up many hits, each site that has a bio lists the same birthdate...March 27, 1970

there is no way Mariah is in her 40s, I remember when she released her first album , thinking she's cute, but she's just a kid...

Well, they've been lying about Barry Manilow's age for the past 30 or so years. He's turning 63 this year, and the press states that he's 58 or 59. His record company apparently knocked a few years off of his age when "Mandy" came out to appeal to the younger teen crowd (figuring 29 sounded better than 32).

Regarding Mariah, I remember during that video that was shot in Rye Playland ("Fantasy", was it?), she claimed to be a "street kid" from the Bronx. Then, a few years ago, she did a special from her hometown high school. I was surprised to see that it was Harborfields High School in Greenlawn, New York because I was raised the next town over in East Northport.

So ... about 3 years ago, I ran into my old friend from Greenlawn and told her I thought of her when I saw Mariah's special. That's when she told me that she "went to high school with Mariah", in that she was in the same building but never knew Mariah because Mariah was a grade or two behind her.

As I said, a completely fluffy comment. I was just surprised to see her age in People.

I saw on Entertainment Tonight last night that she turned 36 yesterday. I believe it.

I'm 40 and I've always thought I was a few years older then her. I remember vividly her first few videos and her first album and she was 20; it was 1990.

She married Tommy when she was 24, June 1993. He is 21 years older. That makes him born in 1949 and he was.

I believe it.

Small world - I've also got a friend who went to high school with her. I'm 38 (er, 39 when the heck did that! happen), my friend graduated a year behind me from college, Miriah was a year behind her in high school. 36 sounds about right.

Having seen the HS yearbook pictures, I believe my friend's story.

Dh also went to Haborfields High School, Mariah was in his graduating class, 1987. Dh turns 37 this April and unless Mariah was left back several times she will also be 37 this year.

All I got out of this thread was that Barry Manilow is 63!

You know how when you hear something shocking, you don't hear anything else after that.....that's what happened to me! I can't believe I love such an old (fill in the blank) .

Gotta say though, I think he looks pretty good for his age.

Then I guess my friend has a bad memory. Beats me, I wasn't there.

As a side note -- I went to high school with Edie Falco. She was a year behind me, and admits to being 44, so all is right in the world. She said that she was in the drama department in high school, and I was on the stage crew. I don't remember her at all, and it might have been that our paths didn't cross. I do remember her brother. I didn't even realize they were related until I read the interview.
