Just a few thoughts from a long time listener...

For anyone who is complaining that we don't put more of our YouTube videos in iTunes, do a quick Google search on what you'd like - making YouTube videos into audio - and maybe that will fix your situation. It requires you to do a little work, but if it is that important then it should be worth it, right?
I've done that work its not easy, especially for the technically challenged listeners. It's actually EAISER for YOU to strip the audio and post that in an audio only feed then it is to do it the other way around. A lot of applications that convert YouTube RSS Feeds no longer work when YouTube Depricated the RSS API. Now you basically have to download the video strip the audio out, put it into a playlist and sync your phone. This also won't grab new content, so if you are on the go you need to have this set up ahead of time. The whole point of a podcast app is for new content to be delivered automatically

Most of these apps and solutions require an app on your computer to be running to update so if you leave the house, you won't get new content even if you have that automated

Don't get me wrong, I appreciate everything you guys do for us craig, and at ZERO cost to us, but your basically inconveniencing the very people you are intending to reach because you don't want to add a few steps to your workflow to just strip the audio and update another feed.

EDIT:
Before I typed the above I had just spent a half hour trying to find an easy way to share with you all how to turn a youtube channel into a podcastable RSS feed but there really isn't any. All the instructions out there are mostly old and outdated and DON'T WORK.

The process I had used I only was using because I wanted to watch the video podcasts on my TV without getting out of Plex (a home theater media player for those that don't know) and with Plex the YouTube plugin did not work so I had to find a way to automatically download said videos however the result was not pretty, filenames were "JkduyghklUJKHD73D.mp4" and nothing like "DisUnplugged Episode #322" so viewing them in any sort of sensical order was not applicable. Luckily a 3rd party youtube plugin came around and solved that but it wasn't an easy.

For those that want to take a dive in to the manual process, I use a program called "YouTube to MP3" by MediaHuman. It will extract the audio, its free with a paid version for extra features but unneeded. You'll need to put the resulting files into iTunes (i believe it can do that itself but I manually do it as I don't use it for just one podcast)

good discussion everyone

I too miss the second hour with the brackets and stuff like that. Maybe with Steve coming back they will have some more resources and can do them again (wink, wink, nudge, nudge, knowwhatImean, knowwhatImean)

I do get the viewpoint that the team can be come off a bid jaded - especially when compared to how they talk about Disneyland ... which I think makes sense as Disneyland is more of a vacation for them like WDW is for (not that they are not working then but still planning the flights, hotels, meals, etc). I also might be more sensitive to this as my last WDW trip was vastly superior to my Disneyland trip (better CMs, etc.) so don't see what the team sees I guess in comparing the parks

Thought I also know the love is still there - I recall a picture Pete posted to Facebook not too long ago of Cinderella's Castle with the caption "Never gets old"

I do appreciate when @*NikkiBell* posts the links to new uploads here - definitely helps. Sometimes it can be confusing where to look when trying to find older content

I do love all the content out there and have been loving the live Facebook and in the park videos and stuff so hope that continues

Just to be clear, I do not expect anything to change just because I happen to prefer audio and I'm not asking Craig or anyone to do even more work than they already do. I'm a dinosaur. I get that. Everyone else prefers video so that's where they focus their time and energy which totally makes sense. I'm 52. That's rarely any company's target demographic as far as sales are concerned (except for medical devices and such). 18-35 is usually the key market for almost everything. You need to play to your customer base.

well then this 36 year old doesn't matter either, however coming from a Customer Service background in Retail for 15 years why inconvenience the few when it doesn't take all that extra work on the employee part. The company I work for doesn't want us to call and let our guests know about a sale anymore....the sale will be out across email and social media. Heck no! there are a good portion of my guests that don't want, or don't have email and thank us for giving them a call. Until that portion of the guest list dies off I'm doing the extra work for them especially in this age where just yesterday or the day before another store (Macy's) is announcing more store closures.

anyways back to the topic....I do believe there are more than just you and I that want the audio...its a small market? compared to video yes, but one should not ignore that market just because the bigger one is taking off.

Perhaps it's time for DIS Annual Listener/Viewer Survey get insights in what we want to hear and see.

The customer base for the Dis is probably anyone who wants to go to Disney. I think that is probably one of the widest customer bases out there. I am 48 and have twin 5 year olds so I busted that 18-35 demographic pretty easily. Plus, the older we get, the more time and perhaps money we can spend on WDW or DL or ABD etc. At least I hope that is the case.

I agree though that I am not looking for anyone to do huge amounts of extra work. I would just like a little longer podcast with some more chatting about a topic and perhaps a spring clean of the various Dis content sources at some point.

I too miss the show having a main topic like saving money, dos and don'ts, best attractions, etc.

If you get the DIS Daily Update emails during the week and/or watch the Daily Fix, there's really little reason to watch the majority of the podcasts as they just rehash that content.

Having someone report from inside the park has been a neat touch, but I hope some themed discussions come back to the show.

Responding to OP original post:

1. The main show may be shorter than it used to be with the 2nd segment cut out, but there are now 5 shows in total (6 if you count Connecting With Walt). That, and they do a LOT more in-park vlogs and misc. content. So if the trade off is to have a shorter Orlando show for all that other good stuff, I’m fine with that.

2. Initially, the way they separated the content was confusing, but I’m a tech-savvy millennial, so after a few minutes of looking, i realized what they were doing :D

-The DIS UNPLUGGED youtube channel is strictly the shows and in-park vlogs. Basically, anything driven by the personalities on the team.

-THE DIS youtube channel contains the DAILY FIX vids and in-park content (ride POV’s, shows, interviews, etc.)

-The DREAMS UNLIMITED TRAVEL channel has the things pertaining to that show (I don’t know why they needed a separate channel, but I guess they wanted to simplify it and separate it from the rest for people who don’t necessarily care about the other stuff The Dis makes).

Facebook live and periscope things are just extra stuff they do if you care to follow along. No one is missing out terribly by not catching those. Unless you are in dire need to keep up with Theresas sleeping cat on periscope, you'll be fine without it :D

And articles are on the website for people who want to read stuff.

None of this seems confusing, really. There's just a lot of content in various formats for people to consume. Ingest, if you will.

3. If they ever seem jaded, it's because they live here and go all the time. They don't make it a secret, and usually point out a certain thing might be great, but might be a rehash of something Disney did last year (which doesn't apply if you've never seen said thing in the first place).
You may have noticed on their recent Disneyland coverage how more excited they were. Because they don't live in California, so it's a special thing whenever they go out.

This. Thank you. EXCELLENT post. You hit the nail on the head completely here.

This is a very good question. Since I watch very little of the video content, I took some time on a lazy Sunday morning to scan through both YouTube channels to see if there is really that much that I'd want audio from.

1. The Daily Fix - The show is essentially audio-only anyway except for seeing who is speaking. There's no video content here and the information isn't time-sensitive (other than the weather report which only matters if you're there). I know that most of the stories get repeated on Tuesday but it would still be nice to listen to it every day.
2. Restaurant reviews - I only looked at recent stuff but Art Smith's Homecoming, Blaze, and Drhum Club would all work just fine as audio feeds.
3. On the DIS feed, the first thing that pops up is a video of people singing a song from Frozen at the D23 Expo. As with the Fix, there's nothing particularly "video" about it. It's 3 people standing on a stage singing. Multiple other videos from D23 are the same, either performances or interviews that would be just as enjoyable listened to.
4. Interviews: Chef Tim from Flying Fish, J. Michael Roddy about the Star Wars Spectacular show.

I realize I'm tilting at windmills here and I'm clearly in the minority. I don't expect anything to change. I wish I had the time that everyone else seems to have to sit and watch all of these videos but I just don't. I'll keep on enjoying all of the audio content. Hopefully that won't ever go away.

All of your bullets here are worthy of video in my opinion.

Steve, I love ya, but I think you need to take a step back with this situation here and look at it from a different perspective. The viewership has significantly increased since the podcast went to video. The team has been able to do things that were never possible with audio only. There's quadruple the amount of content. In fact, there's so much that it's become "The DIS Unplugged Network." That's incredible in itself.

Times have changed. Video is the ultimate way to engage viewers and deliver content that is informative, entertaining, and worthy of being shown. Still though, the network offers audio options to satisfy the minority who prefer that route - Connecting with Walt, DIS POP, and the DL edition.

Do you watch/listen to the news at night? I know I tend to throw the tv on for background noise and listen while preparing dinner or cleaning. Have you tried playing The Daily Fix (or something else you'd like as audio only)? It's the perfect opportunity. During a lunch hour is another option as is after dinner instead of watching tv. I play the shows on my living room television to wind down at night. If I'm too busy one night, I'll watch the next day or later in the week.

I'm a teacher, private tutor, freelance writer, message board moderator, and owner of a small business. Add my recent hunt for a new house into the mix, and my time is more than limited. Still though, I enjoy watching the show and fit it into my schedule. If I can't watch an episode the day it comes out, I'll watch it at some point during the week. I love it and prefer doing so over regular tv programming.

There's a saying in my classroom that keeps popping into my head here and, although this is far different from school follies, I think it does relate if even in a minute way: You get what you get and you don't get upset. When passing out special treats to my kids, we use this as a way to remind ourselves to be thankful for any goodie that comes our way. It doesn't matter if Johnny has a red one and it's Billy's favorite color or if Suzy has one that sparkles, we enjoy what we receive as it's given. We don't lament over aspects of them that don't suit our personal tastes.

The shows on the network are just that - special treats - and I think of them in that way every week. They're unique little packages for me to savor in. If something doesn't appeal to me, I won't watch it and instead spend my time on a different segment, episode, or show. If I have an idea or piece of constructive criticism, I share it but do so and then move on with my day; if it's acted upon, great and, if not, that's okay too. I'm just thankful either way that so much is being offered to me.

I hope this makes sense. I've tried to offer some ideas to help.

Nikki - i don't think anyone is saying that video was not a great development for the team or the podcast. It is not the change to video that I dislike, it is the segmenting the content into a number of different places. Before I had a 90 minute show I could download and enjoy. Now I have a shorter show and have to hunt down other content from multiple places.

Of course, people consume the Dis product in different ways. Your way would probably not work for me. However, if the intention behind the podcast and the site is to keep people coming back and perhaps get them to use Dreams, then perhaps some tweaks would make sense if it keeps everyone coming back and not just those who can watch videos. Of course, that's up to Pete and the team.

Perhaps it is true that I am in a small minority group that primarily uses the podcasts and not the other content sources. If that is the case and the Dis team want to go with shorter podcasts but multiple other sources of content, then that is their right and there is nothing I can do about it. I will continue to listen but also look elsewhere for my daily commute time. With all respect to you and the Dis team, I don't think this is a case of "you get what you get and you don't get upset". Instead it would be "you get what you get or you can get what you want elsewhere". Now I don't want to do that, but it is up to the Dis team whether they care about it.

From your post it looks like I am very much in a minority here. I get that. I don't think you will convince me to change how I listen or what I would like to listen to, but that is ok. No worries.

We provide on an average week one Disney World show, two Disneyland shows, one Dreams show, one Universal show and either one or two DIS POP shows all on our iTunes feeds. We do post a lot more video on a weekly basis then audio, but that's because Pete wanted to invest heavily in making video a priority and made this a reality through Dustin, then myself, Ryno and Oliver. We will not abandon our original audio audience and have even added Connecting with Walt and some DIS POP episodes that are exclusive only as audio. However, we are heavily focused and driven on producing great video content as that's what we were brought in to accomplish. A lot of the things we do in our opinions will not translate to audio and that is why we chose the medium that we did. Others have the potential to also be audio, which some of you have pointed out, but the time it would take us to make it available would take us away from other projects and productions causing others to suffer whether it's website visitors, video viewers, or our families who graciously put up with the long hours and commitment we have already made to deliver the amount of content we do. The point is, in an ideal world it would be great for everyone to have everything they want the way they want it, but not even Disney can do this with their parks, which gives us the opportunity to have discussions about it with friends.

Craig - I agree with everything you said. I think the video content is awesome. I just wish the main podcast could be like the Universal podcast - housekeeping, news and then a topic, rather than just housekeeping and news. I don't think anyone is questioning your hard work or the hard work of the rest of the team when it comes to the video content. I just want you guys to hang around longer in Pete's studio each week for the main podcast and talk about a topic.

As a listener before a member of the team, I totally understand. Over the past year we have been looking at ways to tweak and adjust the content of the Disney World show. One of the things we did look at was the content into the second segment.

The segments Dustin hosted were very popular and very helpful in trip planning, but we had to temporarily step away from them because A) Dustin is no longer with us and until we have a host that we believe can put the time, energy and enthusiasm into the segments then it won't work and B) sometimes there just isn't anything relevant to discuss and we don't want to stretch on and put out mediocre content just so there is more of it. I've said it already that we are striving to put out more content, but it also has to be good or it isn't going to see the light of day.

That being said, if you do follow our DIS Unplugged YouTube channel, you may have seen us testing the waters with mini episodes over the past 6 months. Some would even point out that these are very close to being like our old segments, but with only 2 or 3 people giving their opinions instead of 7 or 8. I can't give specifics, but if you read between the lines you may see a hint of what might come in the future for video and audio. Or you might not, we are always open to change.

And finally, for anyone wondering, here is the breakdown for the channels - the DIS Unplugged YouTube channel is focused primarily on members of the DIS Unplugged team and features podcasts, in-park vlogs, dining reviews, and anything featuring any member of our team. The DIS YouTube channel, which was the home to all of our content before the split focuses on overview videos, ride through videos, and the Daily Fix. While there are people out there that enjoy the DIS Unplugged and enjoy the team as personalities, there are others that don't. Some people just want to watch videos to get an idea of what something is like before their vacation or look back and reminisce and others want to hear our opinions. We would appreciate that our audiences wanted to do both, but again, life is not idea sometimes.

I understand that it doesn't make sense to some (it didn't even make sense to Pete at one point), but usually everything we do is part of a grander plan.

Although I've been on the boards 15 years, I just started watching the podcasts. I'm all caught up on 2016 and watched some of 2015 so they are pretty fresh in my mind. I could see the regular podcast continuing with Pete, John, Kevin, Kathy, and sometimes Corey, Julie, and/or Theresa rotating in and out as the main panel with support from Craig, Ryno, Oliver talking about news and 1 feature. I could also see Ryno/Oliver splintering off for mini- episodes and Craig/Steve (when he comes back) doing the same (or whatever combo). I also like the reviews with the smaller group of 4/5 folks. Maybe giving a name to the small mini-episodes might make it easier to find content, like Ryno with DisPop. I really liked the recent UK with Oliver and your walk through MK. Perhaps those kinds of shows could be under one title. Sorry for rambling...

Craig - Many thanks for the response. I will read between the lines as you suggest and hope for new developments. While I know things can change, your post made me a very happy chap. Thanks for that.

Not sure I will ever get my head around the split YouTube channel. Probably because I don't really understand someone coming to any Dis related content if they don't like the personalities of the team. Many thanks for the explanation.

So, while we are chatting here, any chance we can get the forum list on WDWInfo (old style with News and Rumors far down the list) to match the forum list on Disboards (new style with News and Rumors in a different place)? Just checking...

Thanks again.

Things change, and they NEED to change. This doesn't mean toss out the old. It means figuring out the delicate balance of old and new, keeping it fresh and interesting.
Some people have a really hard time adjusting to any change---think of re-orgs at work. Coke changing it's recipe. People asking you to move one seat down in the movie theater.
Other people just expect it and embrace it. We're all different.

I think this crew has bobbed and weaved as best they can. There IS new content, new talent, new programming. It also takes time and tweaking.
The viewing audience had a huge and positive response to Ryno and Oliver and their segments. It is a breath of fresh air. Oliver's Epcot/England video---outstanding.
You see an enthusiastic and supportive response to Craig and Kylie's Magic Kingdom video, with calls for #morekylie. It's great.
People COUNT ON Pete to rail on and get worked up. It's part of the soil. If that changed, it would crumble.

These folks have a proven history of knowing how to do this, listening to their audience and adjusting accordingly. They all have a passion for Disney, as do the listeners.
To be honest, when I started watching the videos--I wondered why there weren't any young people and that changed quickly. I thought the demographic wasn't aimed at me but I have come to appreciate the diversity in age and life experience. The different family compositions and their tips on how they approach Disney are very valuable.

I'd much rather watch a group of people with genuine care and affinity toward one another, than a made up group of "talent" put together for a show. They treat each other like family, and we all know what families can be like! Buckle up

I agree 100%. The volume, variety, and quality of content that the team has been producing is better than ever. No argument here on that at all.

Times have changed. Video is the ultimate way to engage viewers and deliver content that is informative, entertaining, and worthy of being shown.
Again, I agree completely, which is why I said earlier that I'm well aware I'm in the minority on this point and have no expectation of anything changing.

Do you watch/listen to the news at night?
I do not. I have yet to find a newscast that appeals to me. I don't care about who shot who where. I don't care about sports. I don't care about politics. And when there is a story of interest, they over-cover it outrageously. I used to love to watch the news when it was 30 minutes long. Now that they have to occupy 2-3 hours or more, or 24 hours on CNN, they've forgotten the art of "just the facts, ma'am". Even the weather report is ridiculous, often lasting 5-10 minutes when all we really need to see is the board with the 7-day forecast. That should take a minute or less.

Some people just want to watch videos to get an idea of what something is like before their vacation or look back and reminisce and others want to hear our opinions. We would appreciate that our audiences wanted to do both, but again, life is not idea sometimes.
I think that's a great point, Craig. You aren't producing content for one specific unified audience. Some of your followers are big fans of the show and the members of the team. Folks like me who have met all of you in person and would tune in to hear you read the phonebook. We want to hear what's new, what's happening in the company, what are the rumors, what has changed since our last visit. Then there are folks who just stumble across DIS content when doing research for an upcoming trip. Maybe they're trying to explain what Disney World has to their kid who has never been there. Watching a stroll through the park or a couple of ride POV videos is perfect for them. I'm sure none of you expect all followers to consume all content all the time.
I don't really understand someone coming to any Dis related content if they don't like the personalities of the team.
It isn't necessarily that anyone doesn't like the team. They may not even know the team exists. They may just be searching YouTube for info on WDW while planning a trip. They may not be hardcore fans who would find a Disney podcast on iTunes. I'm sure that's a big part of why viewership is up dramatically since they went to video. Some of those folks may eventually find their way to the shows, but many probably don't, which is fine, too.

I'm a young guy and very tech savvy so I can and will watch everything via video when I can. I actually discovered the podcast because it went video. I've never listened to the WDW, universal, or dreams via audio. I prefer to watch everything via video and subscribe to well over a dozen YouTube channels mostly Disney related content. I watch videos before I go to bed or while I'm sitting and eating lunch or something. Audio podcasts like connecting with Walt or dis pop I will listen to while I run or when I working on something.

I am a huge fan of all of the dis video content and pretty much anything the Dis does. Something like the daily fix I don't think needs to go to audio since it's so short and quick.

As for the format of the WDW show. I see where some of you are coming from. I also kind of agree but also see where the team is coming from.

A lot of the housekeeping is necessary and I would also say that a lot of the housekeeping prior to the mega meet was about the mega meet which is now over. The news varies from week to week on bigger stories to less notable stories that's just how theme park news goes. Trust me I know about that working with the rumors and news board. The team still does rapid fire which sometimes creates discussion sometimes it doesn't.

The Dis produces more content than any other Disney related site out there. No other site has 5 Disney/Universal related podcasts, disboards, wdwinfo, YouTube content, Facebook, periscope, Twitter, Instagram.

I can only imagine that even more content and other related things are being worked on behind the scenes For the future.

So, while we are chatting here, any chance we can get the forum list on WDWInfo (old style with News and Rumors far down the list) to match the forum list on Disboards (new style with News and Rumors in a different place)? Just checking...
What do you mean by this I'm confused.
