Okay.. so the new
D23 Calendar:
includes a ton of unrealized parks ideas, in addition to movies, shows, etc.
The very first idea is "Edison Square" which quite frankly is very cool.
The next is "The Pirate Museum" which we all know eventually became "POTC"
The next is "Mickey's Madhouse", developed in the 70's for
Disneyland for "Dumbo's Circusland". It was going to be a wild mouse coaster set in the early world of black and white Mickey Mouse Cartoons. Ward Kimball was the genius behind it.
There's "Tokyo Sci-Fi City" a redesign for Tomorrowland at Tokyo Disneyland. There wa going to be a new ride that featured a Rocketbike ride through an otherworldy strange landscape. A test track was even developed at Disney's Golden Oak Ranch, and part of the track is still there.
The "Lewis and Clark Adventrue" was being developed for "The St. Louis Project", which was essentially an indoor Disneyland "an entire city block filled with four stories of attractions and restaurants".
The "Garden of the Gods" was developed in the 70's by Marc Daviswho wanted a full scale view of the Greek Underworld, Hades, with the river Styx and Cerberus. The Topiaries for the garden were grown and ended up in front of "it's a small world".
"Rock Candy Mountain" is discussed in depth in
The Disney Mountains book, but was going to be for Casey Jr. and Storybook canal.
There's a gorgeous picture of "Discovery Bay" set in the Victorian Age of Invention for Disneyland.. Very Steam Punk, and eventually the proprieter of "Professor Marvel's Gallery of Illusions" became Dreamfinder at Journey Into Imagination!
"Herbie the Love Bug Ride" was developed in the 70's to be able to do wheelies, split into two, and run tilted up on one side.
Western River Expedition, planned for WDW to be like POTC, Marc Davis' brain child, Tony Baxter developed BTMRR from it.
Museum of the Weird, precursor to The Haunted Mansion, developed by Rolly Crump, and I think we all know the back stories to this...
The Switzerland Pavilion was planned for EPCOT to hold a souped-up version of the Matterhorn, the finale would have featured a spinning avalanche tunnel of ice, giving the illusion the sleds were riding upside down.
And finally, the "Enchanted Snow Palace" was concieved for WDW. Marc Davis thought of this cavernous, snow-peaked boat ride through ice as a perfect respite from the unrelenting Orlando sunlight and humidity. There's a picture of polar bears playing in a magical ice landscape, and a snowflake queen surrounded by snow owls. No pictures exist of the ride vehicles.
So there you have it.
The calendar in an Imagineering nutshell. enjoy
