Disney puts "Jungle Cruise" in high gear

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Following the record-breaking success of "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest," Walt Disney Pictures is giving high-priority status to another potential adventure franchise based on a Disneyland ride.

It is developing "Jungle Cruise," inspired by the ride in which parkgoers travel the jungle river guided by a riverboat skipper, encountering such wild creatures as piranhas and gorillas during their tour. The ride was one of the 22 original attractions when the park opened in 1955.

The executive producers of the CW network's superhero saga "Smallville," Al Gough and Miles Millar, are in negotiations to write the script. Plot details are being kept under lock and key, but the movie will be set in the 20th century.

"Dead Man's Chest," the second feature based on Pirates of the Caribbean, another of Disneyland's most popular and long-standing rides, has grossed more than $1 billion worldwide. The across-the-board success of the film, with its broad demographic appeal, has been cited by Disney's new president of production Oren Aviv as representing the direction in which the movie division is heading.

Movies based on Disneyland rides, however, have not always had smooth sailing. While "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl" grossed $305.4 million domestically in 2003 and "The Haunted Mansion" banked a solid $75.8 million that same year, Disney's "Country Bears" took in just $17 million in 2002.

Perhaps this has something to do with the proposed rehab???

That is an interesting thought...hadn't connected the two but it certainly makes sense.

And those wonderfully popular suggestions about placing Lion King characters in the ride...unless, of course, this is animated.

I'm curious what folks think about this idea? Do we think JC is strong enough to mount a film?

It's not the story that makes JC interesting, it's the skips. Not sure how a Chatty Cathy style im(re)prov comedy will translate to the big screen.

I'm not even sure I know what the story line really is now that I think of it. I guess they could make up whatever they want, throw in some schtick and call it a tie in.

This is what I was wondering...a good skipper makes the cruise what it is...if yo get a skipper with a lackluster delivery it wrecks the ride. We felt that way on Kilamanjaro Safaris...the first time we went the driver was very monotone and we figured we'd never ride it again. We did again last time just so we could see the animals, and the driver was much better and it was a whole different ride...

As for the movie plot...we could see a headhunter movie or a boatload of dead skippers, who knows what they will come up with!

And maybe while in the Jungle we will also run into George of the Jungle or Tarzan in addition to Lion King....just think of all the cross-product tie-ins.

And then we will have to redo the ride to add an AA of Brendon Fraizer since those who go to the FL park will ask "Where's George?"

(this sounds like another Country Bears movie IMHO)

I don't know why Disney does this. Eventually there will be no more attractions to base movies on and the studio will close unless some creative people are hired. p.s. it does seem like J.C. will be staying! :cool1:

Naah. Even after you've made Spectromagic - The Movie and Pop Century - The Motion Picture you still have all those direct to video sequels. :)

Well, considering that the attraction itself is based on a couple different river adventure movies, I'd say yes. Though I hate in general. I think they got lucky with Pirates.

Like Pirates they could be pull it off with a strong script and funny captain.

I think it could be done well like Pirates, the skipper in the ride can't be the main character though because the skippers on the ride are always different, male and female. They would need to come up with a great character like Jack Sparrow and get a solid actor like Johnny Depp to do a great job with the role. Once they have a likeable character and a blockbuster story then they could incorporate the animatronic character into the scenes of the ride. I want to say again though, I do think this COULD be done well but I don't have high hopes that it will be.

On another note, I would love them to do a CoP movie! Anything to save my favorite attraction.

It will be starring Eddie Murphy, Lindsay Lohan and Raven.

and they will stop at a high School along the way and dance and sing together!
