June 27, 2013 - Magic in the Med (Venice)

When you board, go check with the port excursions desk. Often things open up on boarding day, or disney holds extra spots they don't put up online.

Thanks. That's what I was planning to do. However, when I called yesterday I was told that I can't cancel any tours once I board the ship. That means that if they don't have the extra tickets I'm stuck with my family being split between two tours.

I'm struggling with doing Venice on my own or taking an excursion or private tour. Does anyone have any thoughts?

First of all, welcome to the DIS and to the June 27th Magic in the Med to Venice Meet group! For Venice, we are doing a DCL the first day to get us off the ship and out and about quickly and get a good overview of where we are, plus we wanted to go to Murano, so that's what we're doing. Then after we get back and have dinner, we'll leave our teenagers on the ship (unless they want to go back out with us) and go out on our own for a while. On the second day, we're doing the Secret Itinerary tour at Doge's Palace (booked independently) and then spend the rest of the day working our way back to the ship.

Disney has an excursion for St. marks, Doge Palace and Gondola ride that looks interesting. However, I have a 16 year old DD and the family version of the tour has been sold out for every time I look, EXCEPT that yesterday two seats became available. So, now I have my family of four split between the family tour and and adults only tour on July 4. The family and adult tours look identical, but Disney won't let me book my DD on the adult tour. Is anyone planning to give up two tickets to the 8:15 July 4 tour? If so, please PM me. Thanks

i would say if this is a tour you absolutely want to do, then keep your booking as you have it and then just keep checking to see if the additional slots come open on the family tour that you can get the rest of your family in so you guys can go together. Because you have tickets for each of you now, but you just can't do it all together, but better to at least get to do it. Although you might look for a private tour that is similar and compare the time and cost and whether you might do that as a family rather than splitting up through DCL. Actually that's probably what I would do - look for a private tour - check TripAdvisor and also CruiseCritic on their Italy ports board to see if you can get some recommendations.

Sorry for all the posts. :mic: Just trying to "earn my ears."

Yeah, for DIS you have to have those 10 posts before you can do a PM - the nice thing about the Meet threads is that most of the time your fellow DISers don't mind the post post post to get your post count up to be able to PM. Glad you made it to your 10 and hope to see you over on FB, too. But as you can see, there's still a lot of info and activity here on DIS - I like having a FB group to be able to get to know the other folks more individually but I like having the trip planning and such over here. Be sure to check out the activities and such we have planned for the group - Meet and Greet on sailaway day at 3 p.m. in Promenade Lounge, and on the evening of July 4th starting at 10 PM we're doing a 4th of July celebration, also in Promenade Lounge. Join us if you can.

As we get closer to sailing, people are finalizing their plans and may drop out in favor of a private tour or whatever, so definitely keep checking back. Are there two more spaces on the adults only tour? Have you asked about making any sort of exception for your DD? How close to 17 is she? Sometimes if demand is high enough for a particular tour, DCL will engage an extra tour - we've had that happen before - and it was maybe a month out when we saw it opened up. So do keep checking.

10 at last!!:cool1::cool1::bored:

Yay!

Hey all you experienced Disney cruisers-

Regarding our Key to the World on board- When we have cruised on Royal and Carnival in the past we were able to get a bungee keychain thing and they punched a hole in the card at the casino on board. Wondering what the Disney equivalent of this is or if we need to bring something? We like not having to carry a purse or wallet when we are just going around the ship.

Thanks!

Most people on DCL use a lanyard they are given at checkin for returning cruisers. They sell one on the gift store too. It has a plastic sleeve that you put your card into. That's what we use.

And in addition to what Jel0511 said, you can get a hole punched at Guest Services. We used to bring our own hole puncher for that very reason but I was always afraid I'd punch it where it would crack or interfere with something that needed to be visible or work to open the door (LOL). My boys don't like the pouches which is why we started hole punching. If you have something leftover from a previous cruise or have a lanyard, bring it with you. Oh, one other thing about lanyards is that when it's windy up on deck, you may want to tuck it under your shirt so it doesn't flap away, or worse yet, fly away - I saw one fly off a lady once. Not quite sure how it happened, but yikes! I'd hate to lose mine that way. We will also tuck our photo ID in the pouch when we go into port so we aren't digging through the bag when we get back to the ship.

Anyone interested in getting together for a photo meet? Maybe on a sea morning? I know there are some photographers here in our group. The June 15thers are doing one and some of the folks on FB were just chatting about 20x zoom and such ... so I thought some of y'all might want to get together for a photo meet.

Feel free to talk amongst yourselves. The only thing I know about cameras is turn it on, point and click, and hope for the best.

And speaking of cameras, today I charged our batteries and emptied the memory card(s) so we're ready to go.

Well we are almost there:
Tuxedo booked...
clothes all fit, washed and ready (almost)
Cruise docs completed and printed out...
Air lines tickets confirmed and meals ordered...
Hair appointments booked

Now I need to focus on FE stuff... I need ideas.

Soooo excited!

By the way are there any other Canadian DISers who want to celebrate Canada Day with a cold bevie or a pint on July 1st?

We aren't Canadian but we are always up for hanging out with new friends. For the US Independence Day on the 4th, we are doing a 10 PM meet at promenade lounge. Perhaps you might host something on the 1st at a similar time and place. That's Naples day and its a sea day next morning so people don't have quite so early a curfew :)

Have my hotel in Barcelona for arrival and departure days! We're staying at the Royal Ramblas. Anyone else staying there? I didn't see anyone mention it on the hotels thread.

School's out on the 21st, then we leave on the 25th! Excited doesn't even cover it!

Hi! This is the second time we (I and my wife) join Disney Cruise to Mediterranean. Last time was 2011.
It is so excited that I'll been to mediterranean again with Dsiney Magic soon.
This forum is great and I got lot of useful information.
:tink:

Someone on the June 15th sailing asked about what movies would be playing onboard, so I called DCL and asked. Here's what the CM said:

Tangled
Chimpanzee
Avengers
Brave (2 and 3D)
Oz
Finding Nemo
Frankenweenie
Wreck It Ralph
Lincoln
Iron Man 3
Monsters University (starting June 21)
Lone Ranger (starting July 3)

and not included in this list are any they show on the TV.
Do you know the schedule of show at each evening? Also, I noted in page 8 of the pre-arrival guide that "Golden Mickey" is included in Fun Aboard the Magic. Is it truth?
