June 25, 2012 - WONDERful 7 night Alaskan cruise

I'd rather tip based on the quality of service at the end, this way the staff is encouraged to give good service for a good tip. I wonder if they were having trouble with people spending all their money then not having enough for tips or stiffing the staff? I bet there are too many people who don't tip if they see it as an option.

I 100% agree with you and DCLShel. ::yes:: We always do personalized thank you cards, and hand our tips directly to the servers / stateroom host the last night of the cruise, and always end up giving quite a bit more than the recommended amount. I can only think of 2 times in the 11 cruises we did where we only gave just the minimum suggested. On our last Alaskan cruise, the stateroom host that we had was terrible. He never remembered to bring ice, he actually knocked a hole in the wall :sad2:of the room when he was making up our DS's beds, (I actually called it in, as I was concerened that we would get the blame for it) I think we only got towel animals like twice during the week, and on and on. I spoke to him about his lack to attention to detail like everyday during the cruise. Hopefully, we're all wrong, and we'll get the excellent service that most of us have always experienced, and we'll be adding to our tip amounts on the last day, but am worried that there'll be a lack of incentive, if they know they will at least get the min amount from everyone.

On another note, after 6 months of checking the Delta website daily, I have finally managed to get the exact flights we were looking for out of Fargo to Seattle at the standard 25,000 miles / ticket. :thumbsup2 Up until about a week ago, we were still scheduled to fly from Minneapolis, but flights from Fargo finally opened up! :cool1: This will save a 3 hour drive, and a lot less hassles in the airport. Check in at Fargo is so much easier. We'll still be going through MSP, but in transit, so just need to be able to get from one gate to another.

Still lot's of rooms showing up available on the DCL website. I've noticed that they've introduced 2x new booking classifications. (VGT) Verandah Guarantee? & (OGT) Oceanview Guarantee? at some really drastically reduced prices. Of course, the website states on new bookings only, and you must pay in full when you book. Has anyone gotten any upgrades yet? I think they normally do this at about 5 weeks out, but perhaps they'll be giving some a little earlier. :surfweb:

Just stopped by to say hi... its been a while and notice the tipping thread has hit here... I for one am not happy with it. I'll only say that tips are suppose to be for after services are rendered... not before.

Other then that I also noticed that DCL was discounting... I can tell you that we just had friends of ours that were looking at the DCL cruise and RCL sent them an email for an Alaskan Cruise that is leaving 2 days before ours with longer port times. They were a family of 4 that booked a balcony with airfare for $4K.

Now don't get me wrong but DCL is getting close to pricing themselves out of the market. We are booked on the 6/15/2013 13 day med cruise and we got a 9B before the pricing went public with the 10% OB discount for $7200.

I just looked at RCL and for $4300 I can do the same cruise with airfare and a balcony..... thats almost a $3K difference..... oooooo Mickey its getting tough to be loyal!!!!!

But getting away from that... 2 months to go... whoo hoo LETS GET THIS PARTY STARTED!!!!!!

Glad you were able to fly out of Fargo and save yourself some driving!

Just changed our return flight this morning. Love Southwest - no change fees! Instead of flying home on July 3rd, we're coming back on the 2nd. It'll be a very long day but my older DD is being induced on the 3rd. I'd be a wreck if I was half a country away!!:(

No upgrade here but I'm hoping the cruise doesn't fill up. I'm hoping to upgrade to a verandah at the port.

I agree - its getting harder and harder to justify the cost of DCL. I try to plan as far in advance as possible so I can get the best price. And, it always helps to book onboard but even that isn't as good as it used to be.

We thought about doing the Med cruise again next summer. But, it was double the cost from June, 2011. Geesh! :scared1:

I'm also hoping to upgrade at the port, if I don't get that free upgrade I'm keeping my fingers crossed for. I wonder if Disney will have to start discounting more often now that they have more ships out there and less people are willing to spend that much on a cruise when cheaper options are available. While I wouldn't do another cruise with my kids, I'd check out other ones once they were old enough to not need the kids club (or when they don't go with us at all.) Though I know I'd just compare it to Disney the whole time. :rolleyes1

I booked 2x cabins (connecting SPH's) for the July 25, 2013 12 night Med Cruise next summer, but am having some serious 2nd thoughts about sailing on DCL! :confused3What I had planned on doing, and probably still will, will rebook the same cabins once onboard our Alaskan cruise, to get the 10% onboard discount. That will save us almost $1.5K. :smokin: Even with this, I was doing a bit of research and we can do a 14 night Northern Baltic in a higher level suite, with connecting verandah room on Carnival for almost $2k less! I don't mind paying a bit more for peace of mind on DCL, but come on! :stir:

That is a big difference, though I'd still have to pick the DCL because the kids programs are better than on Carnival. But when the kids get older, prices may force me to look elsewhere for cruising.

Good Morning Everyone! :wave2:

7 weeks today our ship sails! :cool1::cool1:Who's counting? I am! :rotfl2::rotfl2:

My DW was asking me last night about who all is doing the FE exchange. She was talking about getting the shopping done for this. Has any thought been given to a cut-off date for signing up? I also noted that a couple of the cabins signed up haven't given cabin numbers. It's going to make it difficult for delivery of FE goodies. Or, will these be PM'd to everyone once a cutoff date has been decided? :confused3

Good minds think alike! I had the same thoughts about a cut-off date for the FE. My suggestion is May 28th. :hourglass That gives people 3 more weeks to sign up and its 4 weeks before the cruise sails in case people are making gifts. Thoughts?

Hopefully, our group members will start checking in on the boards since our date is getting closer. If we're still missing stateroom numbers, perhaps Glenn (the FE coordinator) can PM them and get the information.

At one time, we also discussed having a "Meet" on Embarkation Day. Is anyone still interested in this? I'm open to suggestions on time and place.

I'm waiting (and hoping and wishing) for my upgrade call from DCL before I give out my room number. Otherwise, we'll be paying for an upgrade. So either way our room number will change. I will make sure I keep everyone updated on it. I like the idea of a cutoff of the end of May.

I'm still interested in a meet, though I think I've only ever made it to one successfully (rained out, ran late, didn't see anyone from the group.)

FE Exchange: End of May works for us. :thumbsup2

I'm still hoping for an upgrade as well, although I am probably delusional. :rotfl2: We've got the connecting SPH's, so if we were to be upgraded, we would need / want upgrades on 2x rooms (still connecting). We've never been upgraded, and this will be our 12th DCL cruise. So, perhaps it's our turn for some pixie dust? pixiedust: I suspect the reason that we have never been upgraded, is we pretty much always book the SPH connecting cabins, :confused3 (9 out of our 12 cruises).

I am routinely checking the DCL website, and have been for over a month now. There's still a lot of availability showing on the higher categories. In fact, I am not seeing much in the way of movement on these. :surfweb: Fingers crossed?

Crossing my fingers too! When I got my one and only upgrade it was about 5 weeks out. So I'm being patient. Though I'm very excited for the cruise! I may start packing this week. I haven't put away my winter clothes because it's what I will wear on board. I'm guessing Alaska summer is similar to Florida winter.

I've only gotten one (free) upgrade and it was on my very first cruise in 2004. (this will be #12 for me, too) I have always been under the assumption that if you reserve a specific stateroom, DCL won't ungrade you for free. You can request an upgrade at the port and pay the difference. Thoughts?

Paul - I noticed we are on the port side, directly across from you! I love staying on Deck 5. We stayed in 5022 on our last Wonder cruise and really liked the SPH. However, I'd love to upgrade to a verandah at the port. It seems like verandahs will be available so it will depend on the additional cost. :worried:

Shay - my DD (Kiley) keeps asking me if she can start packing. You two have the same philosophy - she's not wearing her winter clothes so why can't she pack them?! :lmao:

My brother and his family did the DCL Alaskan cruise last year and said the temps are pretty cool. They - along with every thing I read - say to dress in layers. My only issue is we always overpack! Jeans and sweatshirts take up alot more room than tshirts & shorts. I'm scared :scared1: how many suitcases we'll end up taking. Thank goodness Southwest lets you check 2 bags each for free - haha!

We will definitely be doing laundry on board because I don't think we can pack enough clothes for our few days in Seattle and the entire cruise. I talked to some people from my area who went on the cruise last year and they also said layer up. There were times when they were bundled up with sweatshirts and others just a long sleeve and pants. I am a cold wimp, so I will be prepared.

I got a message that our fish extender is being shipped! This is such a fun idea and my kids will love it. Our current room number is 2104. We are getting so excited but definitely worried about the under vs. over packing as well!

Kelly - are your DFIL & DMIL participating in the FE, too? If so, can I have their names & stateroom number? Thanks!

Hi guys!

Sorry I was MIA for a while. Got busy with other stuff, but now that the cruise is so close I can almost taste it, I'm getting revved up again!

Read through some of the posts here.

Tipping. Ugh. NOT a fan of this new procedure. Hardly is a "tip" at all at this point, is it? More like an "extra surcharge". Now, we always tip all the servers, and usually at more than the suggested, and would never consider skipping out of the last night, etc. to avoid the tip (I can't believe some of the things I read about that on the boards here :faint:). But the old way at least seemed more like a "tip" - that is, something tangible that you actually put in an envelope and personally gave to your server at the end of the trip.

You know, I wish they would just get rid of the entire tipping thing altogether, and just include the tip in the cost of the cruise, and pay the crew accordingly.

Meet and FE. YES! We'd love to participate in a meet, and I think we are signed up for the FE. In the past, we have tried to meet sometime on embarkation day as an ice-breaker, get-to-know-you thing. DCLShel and I are coming in on the same flight on Friday, so I'm am hoping to "meet" her at the Southwest terminal at the St. Louis airport! Maybe we can meet the rest of us sometime before the muster drill?

On our last cruise, we posted some family pictures of ourselves, so that we would have a vague idea of what we looked like for the meet! Maybe we can do that here?

FE. Last cruise I was on, after the sign up was closed, someone drew up a big spreadsheet with everyone's stateroom number, names, and ages. It helped a lot in getting the goodies and then distributing them on the ship! I am no good at all with spreadsheets, so I'll leave that to someone else.

Upgrades. How do you get them? Do you call DCL and ask? Do you ask at the terminal? Would LOVE to get one, preferably free!

Packing. Yikes. I too am SO GLAD I get 2 bags free with SW. DH always complains that I overpack, but with spending 3 days in Seattle the weekend before, and then having to pack layers and heavier clothes, I don't think there is any way around it. I think we will each have 2 suitcases.

Oh yeah, magnets. Thank you for the reminder! We have a lot from the Caribbean cruises, but I need to get some Alaska ones too.

Finally, costs. Yes, we are doing the Med cruise next year, but the price is a bit staggering. Right now, we are justifying it as a graduation gift for both our kids - DD will be graduating from college, and DS from high school. But I don't know if we can do more DCL in the future, especially when the deals on other lines are just so much more reasonable. I hate to abandon the Disney loyalty, but the price difference makes it difficult to justify.

On my NYE Fantasy cruise someone created a FB group so we can post pictures and personal information. Is anyone interested in having one for this group? I don't mind posting pictures here, but I know some people like their online privacy. We don't have to be FB friends to be in the group.

Any rough estimate on how many have signed up for the FE? I'm trying to see if I have enough or if I need to get more. My friend that was going on the cruise with us cancelled so there's one more balcony room free. She realized she just didn't have the money for a cruise right now.
