Depends what he is studying/teaching / researching... ...University of Manchester and Birmingham both have good reputation for engineering and sciences. Also Manchester has a good reputation for Business Studies and also for Art. Both are very established institutions and rate highly in the UK.
Of the two Manchester is the higher ranked - about 25th in the world..... whereas Birmingham is in & around the top 50-60, I think.
These are both Universities ...not 'schools' as described in the UK...places of higher education would be a more apropriate term...ages of students are predominantly (though certainly not exclusively) 18 - 22years for ordinary degrees.
I could probably find out more, if you know what he is interested specifically to learn about these places .
I went to Edinburgh University myself, so can tell you alot more about this place (top University of Scotland, top five in the UK and consistently in the top 20 in the world rankings)...if he is interested ?
