Just a quick stop for now -

Andrew - keep resting and stay away from the disboards ;)

To everyone dieting - congratulations and good luck. I know it's very, very hard. About 11 years ago, I lost 30 lbs. (put 10 back on, everyone thought I was sick). I kept the 20 off for about 9 years. Two years ago, I started to slowly gain all my 20 lbs. back :confused3 I have tried to start my walking routine, but it does not always work. I have no patience, time or energy to watch my diet at this time. Totally stressed out :sad2:

Great news - I was just able to finally book my spa reservations.

Hi All,
Just checking in. Lots of interesting talk going on over past 48 hrs. My e-mail at work has been on the fritz, thus my absence. It's frustrating. Today I'll have to back up all of my data so the IT folks can reload all software in hopes of getting rid of the bug. Cross your fingers!

Quick thougts:
Thanks for setting up the kids thread. I'll get my girls set up tonight to post. They'll really enjoy meeting some new cruise friends.

Glad I'm not the only one looking to shed a few # before we leave! (Hey, even guys worry about that stuff). Feeding our quasi- support group here (pardon the pun) should help keep each other honest in the home stretch.

Still looking for and dis folks that may want to change to private excursions, particularly in Naples, Rome and La Spezia. DW CPA is highly scrutinizing the $ I've booked for DCL excursions!

OK, so I'm offline to labotomize my computer. I'll check in later.

glad to see you are resting... my family sends lots of get well hugs:hug:

Thank s for support.

Helen - CONGRATS :cheer2: you deserve that - 50 lbs is a major milestone and as my counselor used to say - you didn't put it on overnight - don't expect to take it off overnight. Especially with your ruptured disc, you make sure you take it easy and are cleared for any activity - we don't want you missing out on this trip. In the meantime, I say - Baby Steps - however small is still a step. If you can incorporate a good habit into your system - it takes time to show but it can last forever. Remember this - it takes about 21 days to develop a habit - 3 weeks is pretty good if it benefits the rest of your life! And don't forget - we're here now - so you can talk, write if it makes you feel better!

BTW, when in August 2005? You by chance didn't do the Magic Repo did you? I was there in 2005 (Magic) did you hurt it on the ship, doing an excursion? Just curious, when I was on the ship I thought I heard about someone getting hurt - hurting their back. Not you I presume?
It was a 3 night trip on the wonder. When we got to CC one of my discs in my spine ruptured (at the gift shop actually 9:30am) which left me with excruciating pain and no leg movement. :guilty: I was taken by a cm in his car back to the ship and I spent the rest of my time in the USA on my back. We had a week @ BWV after the cruise. DCL were great though, I saw the ships doc straight away. They supplied me with lots of cold gel packs for my back to reduce the swelling. We had transfers booked with them to get us to BW , but they sent us there in a private taxi. Also the head server phoned me and read out the evening menu and sent my food to my room. (not that I felt much like eating). It has taken a year of weekly physio, acupuncture and hydrotherapy to get me mobile again.

Corr a nightmare but DCL seems to try their best for you.

Oh my, Helen! I am so happy you have come so far- I can only imagine the pain you have been in, and how scared you must have been. Are you walking without pain now- how did you keep the dogs from jumping on you when you first got home????
sallie

I don't know if anyone is interested, but I thought I would ask. Is anyone interested in getting landyards for our cruise? I was looking at this landyard badge reel combo http://www.kennyproducts.com/Mercha...CTGY&Store_Code=KPI&Category_Code=Badge-Reels

I talked to someone on the May 26th cruise and got some ideas. The company is sending me some samples but I was thinking either the plain landyard with custom printed badge reel (about $2.50) or a custom printed landyard with blank badge reel (about $3.20). The company doesn't have an example of the latter option but they said they could do it. I just thought of another option, and that would be a plain landyard with one of those snap shut cases (ETA: I can't find these cases except as a first aid kit, so forget this option). I see if I can get a link to what I'm talking about. Anyway, you can put your Key to the World card in any one of these. We could print "Rome-ancing the Mouse" July 28th, 2007 11 day cruise and maybe a mickey head design or something. Let me know what you think. We would need a minimum order of 100.

Your picture is sooooooooooooo good, I quoted it on my Panama cruise thread for 2008, with a FULL credit to you.

They love it and it has made so many peoples day to see it!

THANK YOU AGAIN.

Well, what the May 26th cruisers are doing is passing out the landyards at the DIS meet onboard. I can ask them how they handled payment because it would be alot for one person to take care of then not everyone show up with the bucks. I suppose payment could be handled via paypal, but not sure if everyone has that.

That would be great if you can hand them out on board and have no shipping costs. I have a paypal account but you'll have to tell me how to use it. I only know how to pay for things I've won on ebay. (Talking of which just got 2 nice skirts for the cruise:flower3: )

I have some pain now but nothing compared to what I had. I get stiff really easy and cant stay in the same place for long periods. Thats why I was limited on my choce of excurisions; I cant really sit in a coach for more than an hour or so without feeling some discomfort. I also shouldn't spend as much time as I on the computer (dis) Andrew its hard to take a step back I know.

As for the dogs - virtually lived upstairs for the first month when I got back. Sally is 14yr old with 2 dodgy back legs so she was ok. It was the younger ones that couldn't understand why I wasn't going to training with them. Dave took over and competed with them, but it was hard watching him.

I am improving all the time, but everyso often I get very anxious when I get the odd twinge that it might happen again. I just pray it doesn't.

Ok, we just had a nutritionist give a talk here at work today. Some tips on diets:

* about 65% of our diet comes from carbs. Good carbs are complex (whole grains), have high color, spoils quickly and leaves a stain on your clothes. So if you were to choose between an iceberg salad and a spinach salad, or red wine vs white wine, or dark chocolate vs white chocolate, choose the more colored one. Eat the carbs throughout the day. Remember, they are processed quickly compared to fats and proteins and move out. 15g=one carb serving.
* your body needs food every 4-5 hours. So thats 3 meals a day or 2 meals with snacks or snack all day. If you go longer, you affect your metabolism. It needs to eat to burn fat!
* balance your meals. Have a combo of carb, protein or fat with each meal/snack. Why? Because your protein or fat take longer to digest and slows down digestion than just eating a carb meal. You avoid the two hour blood sugar spike and crash which leads to food cravings. So if you are eating cereal, milk and fruit for breakfast (this is all carbs), you need to add some nuts or protein. Also, with this balance you will feel more satisfied.
* you need to eat to lose weight. With exercise, you need to probably increase your calorie intake (good foods) especially if you are one of those doing the <2000 calorie restriction. People who go on diets actually put their bodies into starvation mode which triggers the body to slow their metabolism way down. You need to find the balance between not triggering your body into starvation mode and losing weight. Many times if you are in a plateau you need to fire up your metabolism with some energy to lose weight. A guesstimate for calories intake: Take your goal weight and add a zero.
* Be careful with supplements. If you are eating right, you probably don't need supplements. Supplements are usually having only one form of a vitamin, when in nature they occur in several forms that are important to health. If you take only one form, you can be causing problems. High C and Calcium supplements lead to stones.
* Fats and sugars. Simple sugars are sucrose (white sugar), honey, dextrose (pasta), lactose (milk). Complex sugars is frutose (fruit sugars). The more complex, the longer to digest and avoid the blood sugar spikes. Best oils: olive, canola, peanut. Get off the transfats and saturated fats (butters, sour cream, etc). I think I got this down right. Correct me if I didn't.
* Low proteins could be giving you migraines. Not sure if its the iron or the protein that is actually doing this.
* Pre-diabetic. your are headed that way (along with cardio and Alheimzer) if you have high blood pressure, wear your weight in the middle and overweight.
* Links:
Nutrition Action Newsletter: http://www.cspinet.org/ suppose to be quite good with informative featured articles.

ETA: forgot to add info on exercise, not much though. Just that your body burns different things at different rate of exercise measured by your heartrate. So usually what happens is that your body will burn carb/glucose at first, then when your heartrate gets up to a certain level, it starts burning fat, if you are really pushing it, it starts burning muscle. So you need to find your level for burning fats. I guess there are tests you can take to find out where that is and its different for people depending on their condition. Those with less muscle mass will start burning fat at a lower heart rate.

Hope this helps:cheer2: :yay: :dance3:

Great information thanks:goodvibes

I've just finished today's excercise bike and I managed 25 mins :goodvibes :woohoo:

Oops, I forgot to bring in the chart with the food pyramid. Except this food pyramid is different. It breaks down the types of carbs to eat between starches, veggies, fruit and... Well, I'll post it tonight when I get home.:thumbsup2

OK here's a question for you all -

What recent thing have you done, learned, earned, etc. that you are most proud of? We always take pride in each other's achievements or special moements, it's about time we take a moment out and respect and acknowledge something of ourselves. I started (see above) who's next?

For me Im really proud of my dogs. I have worked hard training them and its great to see them go out and compete in a team with others. You can tell from looking at them they enjoy it.

Also I got my certificate in the post this morning - I achieved grade 2 @ my Spanish class. Looking on the back, it states that those who attain grade 2
can "can answer simple questions and give basic information along with stating some likes and dislikes But after 1 glass of wine will I be able to remember any of it?

Whilst we are asking questions - Who is your favourite Disney Character?
I love Pooh, Tigger and Eeyore equally.;)
