I understand that folks on on sites for dates are talking about getting groups together to do excursions on their own. Any ideas here yet about that? The more I read the more I think we are going to do most of the ports without the excursions. Head into town on the train, follow guide books, etc. Who else is thinking about that?

Yes i'm think of doing this in Palermo,Marseille and Ville Franche.

Not sure about Rome-civilavecchia yet, either will get the train and book a guide or get the DCL tour.:goodvibes

Depends on the size of the transport they have, I have booked five trips some a cover six people andi have a familiy of four, so there are a couple of seats. But the co's I have contacted are generally 4/6 not coaches.

The price is per van so more people reduce cost.

The prices on tours seems to keep getting higher. I really think we are going to do a lot indenpendtly. Take the train in, where necessary, and go from there. Hop a cab in town or take a bus when we need to. I think Sardinia and Sicily might be the only exceptions to that, as I'm not sure what we would really want to do there, so might rely on a tour. It depends on feed back also from some of the early cruises.

I would love to try to do Marseille, Villafranche and Sardegna on our own. I don't know where to start :confused3

We are definitely seeing my relatives in Palermo - (going to my hometown), so no excursions here. :cool1: Can't wait.

We have/had done some on our own with the Eastern and Western cruises - that was much easier - just by reading previous trip reports and threads like these. They went like clockwork.

We are likely going to do a trip to Arles when we get to Marseille, on our own. As far as Villafranche, we've been to Nice before, and likely will just hop back and forth on the train to there, over to Monaco, then back to Villafranche. Would like to see Ezze if possible, but probably not take that tour. Sardinia and Palermo are open, though I had a student last year from Sicily, so I mentioned to her in the halls that I had to get with her this year and get some info on Palermo.
The more I look at the excusrions, and the prices, the more I think we'll do a lot on our own. Save the money to shop.
Rome, and Florence we are just taking the train in. Not sure of Naples yet.

Hi, looks great. I hope you mean though that the price was reduced, not the size of the luggage. :confused3

Nice luggage, Helen!!

We're a group of five, if not seven, so I can't jump on your tours, Andrew!!

I'm going to read all my travel books and then make some important decisions! There are too many amazing places to check on this cruise! The problem is to not get too exhausted doing everything!!!

Passports have arrived!!!!!!!!! We're just waiting for my DH, who applied after the rest of us!!!!!!!!!!!! So excited.....one step closer.........

Hi All,
It's March, so time to get down to some real planning for this trip. I think we're the only family thus far on the list from the great state of Oklahoma! Glad to see so many already linked up for the 7/28 departure, and looking forward to networking and collaborating with friends here as we prepare.
Have a great weekend.

Sorry, I gotta work on my funny avatar faces and other identity things.

I've spent all morning pouring over the 60+ pages of this thread:surfweb: and I am so overwhelmed. When to fly, where to stay, how to get places, excursions ... oh, and did I mention we don't yet have our passports! Yikes.

I'm going to plead with all of you that have been working on this trip since last March to help get us ship shape (pardon the pun). Any help is greatly appreciated. BTW, we are happy to consider excursions outside of those offered by DCL.

As I said, looking forward to exhanging ideas and friendship with all of you.
