Ok - someone tell me that this does not look like a typical Sister (as in nun)

This is April's 6th grade teacher as well as her 8th grade teacher.

Wonderful story about how the grads and families surprised her.

She and I were talking a few months back when I asked her opinion on some of the excursions in Rome. I had asked her if she'd ever been. Well, after explaining - I took my clue and decided on which ones I would be doing if I got - which I didn't but what I got was a good 2nd choice.

Ok - she then goes on to tell me that she is trying to scrape together money to go on an Alaskan Cruise. But that its hard.

So on Tues evening (2 days before last day of school for Grads) I get a notice saying that the room parents would like to thank Sr. Pauline for her wonderful service to our kids. They were the only students in the last 10 yrs to have a nun as their teacher more than once. Many had her for 3 yrs as she also teaches 2nd level of math (DD goes to AP math classroom). Anyway, they would like to thank her by raising funds to maybe send her back to Ireland.

Well, I called said room mother and told her about my conversation several months back and suggested that maybe instead of a plane ticket to Ireland that they should find out about maybe placing an onboard credit with the cruise line instead of cash. I was worried that should we give her cash - that do to her vow of poverty - she'd be forced to give it to the convent fund.

They said that they would investigate and if that was the case - they'd buy gift certificates for her. Well, after the ceremonies - the room parents called Sr. Pauline up to the stage and handed her a card with the greetings and $900 dollars in cash - TO Be used for her Alaskan Cruise. Well, let me tell you - I have never seen a nun so flabberghasted and close to tears - she actually swayed and held on to the principal - she almost :faint:. She turned beet red and was speechless. After she composed herself - she thanked everyone and hightailed it off the stage but was in euphoria for the rest of the time.

I like to think that a little bit of pixiedust: and God intervened to spread the MAGIC ( :rotfl2: ) as no one knew she was trying to raise funds for this cruise. Had I not been nosy enough to find out what they were fundraising on - she would not have had the response she had - once the word got out - the $ poured in and as you now read - she has one less worry to think about.

HHHMMM....WONDER if it would work for us? :lmao:

Anyway, here is April and Sr. Pauline - she is still in shock and this is about 10 minutes after the announcement. Poor woman is probably trying to figure out how everyone found out! :rotfl: WONDER if I should tell her a little ::MickeyMo told the school? :wizard:

I've actually been thinking of getting tips together. We have them here on the DIS, right? Maybe we can help each other with more tips.

Wow - is it still not done with?

Who's else is on?

Is someone going to :tiptoe: ?

btw, Laura, I loved your story about making coffee for your superiors at the time.

ROTFLMAO!

Yes - I must admit - I get an evil pleasure out of telling people this story - :rotfl2: and you know - when we get together at friend's houses - they don't ask me to make it there either. Out of a group of 10 - 3 are ex-Marines, 2 including myself are ex-Army and 1 is an Air Force service member. And who ends up making the coffee? A Marine! Somewhere, someplace - someone is laughing at that!

Me? I just get a good old shoot-eating grin when I remember! :lmao:

GREAT Story! I love the pic, too. What a generous thing you did... err, that the ::MickeyMo did for her. :goodvibes

My kids went to St. Anthony of Padua in Gardena. Our principal is retiring at the end of this school term, and with her the last of her order of nuns who basically established the school. She has been such an inspiration throughout the years, and has helped so many, including me, in her quiet way. I'm going to miss her.

They both went to Catholic high schools - Nick went to Bishop Montgomery in Torrance & Kelly went to Serra in Gardena, though a lot of her friends went to St. Josephs in Bellflower.

Ok - back to that other photo site to see what else I can do - I'm in an exploring mood! ;)

Oh, and let me say - Thank you for serving our country! I have great admiration for our service people. :)

I, uh, kinda feel guilty... well, almost guilty. ;)

OMG MJ! My other 2 kids went to St. Paul High School in SFS. I investigated Bishop Montgomery but it was just too far away. Then my SIL moved in down the street from it. But her DD kicked up a fuss and said - no way am I going there - so instead she is going to that public school that "is the only good school in Torrence!" according to her. Anyway, St. Joseph's I know only too well! Our now principal graduated from there and was a teacher at St. Pauls. In fact - she nominated DS-Andrew for a Religion Medal that he won and got to wear at graduation. That was the reason for our Sept cruise - a celebration and a pact that I made to the kids. If anyone one of them won one - they had to be elected by the teachers - not the students - and Ms. Pekarcik nominated him and all the teachers voted on him they got to pick out a trip anywhere in the world to visit. Andrew picked that cruise with a little encouragement from me!

Isn't it funny how something so small and yet so far away has connections to others? Bishop Montgomery! Imagine that! :goodvibes as well as a small dose of pixiedust:

Shouldn't - as our EB REPO says - TAKE WHAT YOU CAN - GIVE NOTHING BACK!

Which until just recently - I had no clue why they said it! :headache: :headache:

Now I just wonder why I lead such a sheltered life! :lmao:

 Hey - Does this mean you get to name your own pirate: ?

That is so kewl! :thumbsup2

As for the other part - thanks - didn't do much but I like to think I contributed! LOL Even if I didn't come out of it learning how to make a pot of coffee. I sometimes think that I'm the only one in the world that doesn't know how to brew a pot of coffee!

2 Christmases ago - my DS gave me one of those one-cup coffee brewing pots. The ones that you just drop in a packet that brews one cup. Dang thing is still in its box on my pantry floor. I really think that I was scarred fro life on the coffee thing. ;) :lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

Wonder if that is another reason why I love to cruise so much I don't have to make coffee! :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

:rotfl2::rotfl2:

Everyday, just about, I tell the kids one more cool thing about the cruise. Having hot coffee delivered to my room... mmmmm

I get the super-simple foo foo coffee. I like the Hills Bro (I think that's the brand) of the toffee flavored coffee. Now THIS one you can pour directly into the cup & pour hot water over it. lol
