Cruiser was on her third cruise

Liked the new Shutters services (came on excursions, better groupings of photos)

Cruise staff joined excursions

Loved the fireworks in Barcelona

Felt that there were a lot of new staff being trained

Did not think the food was as good as previous trips

Felt that people should not book their young children on long excursions (they get bored)

Change Euros before you arrive (you can use extras as tips at the end of cruise)

Bring back your purchases rather than pay expensive UPS shipping in Barcelona

I read her post, found lots of interesting info there.
Greetings from the west coast,
We are going on the cruise on July 28th and would like to be join everybody for the fun. My DW and I both have met many of you (DISERS) on the Christmas and Panama cruises and I have been reading the boards for several years. I have always been impressed with how friendly everyone has been. My daughter is also very anxious to meet other DIS kids, decorate our door and participate in the fish mail.
We live sunny Southern California.
My name is Don (45)
My DW is Anna (43) I suspect she will also post!
My DD in Deanna (11)
My DS is Donnie (8)

We are currently in 2 cat. 12 GTY rooms. We had been in cat 10 GTY but switched when the rates went down. (You guys saved us a fortune)
We have 2nd seating for dining. This will be our 5th Disney cruise.

Will hundreds of desperate tourists praying for their single passport to arrive before their cruise besiege me to try to find out how I accomplished it? Will Jason Bourne, upon regaining his memory, snicker at me and call me a rank amateur, given that he's had hundreds?
I can only wonder with trepidation what this will bring. Excuse me for a moment, someone from the Department of Homeland Insecurity is knocking on my door. Be right ba.....
Love the new tag.
I am so sorry. Last summer, my next door neighbor (who has 8 children) woke up one morning and their 16 had a seizure during the night and had passed away in his bed with 2 of his brothers in the room that he shared with him.
The dad had already left for work and works for the CIA ... his is not allowed to have a cell phone and works Top Secret. The police had to go to his Langley (CIA) and talk to him....the only way he could be told.
Well, that took several hours and I sat with Vicki (the mom) and the other kids till he got home. It may have been the worst several hours of my life. The police had told me what had happened and I found it somewhere in my heart to knock on the door....I knew she must have been all alone.
We sat and held hands and prayed for Joel's soul.....for an hour. And then we talked about what a wonderful child he had been......but when I don't know what to say to a parent, I find that reaching out for there hand (what ever the situation) and asking the parent if I can pray for the child is the most comforting. I used to say "What can I do to help" and of course the answer is almost always .."nothing". It takes bravery to do this...but no one has ever told me no. They know I am a believer.
After the VA Tech shootings, we lost two neighbors (freshman at Tech and friends of my sons) and Cho, the assailant, was also from down the street....prayers were the only thing that helped at all. Several kids told me no one has ever prayed with them before.
Ok, I will get off my soapbox.....sorry, just felt the need to share this
Oh my, I read this post after having dealt with my son's incident at school yesterday. i just hugged him extra hard. it amazes me when I think that he was only 3 lbs when born 8 weeks early. I'm always frightened that something will happen.
You are a such a good friend to be there for her when she needed a person most.
I finally booked our hotel -- you should have seen how many screens I had open trying to see if there were discounts and what the best deals were for a triple room. We'll be staying at Las Ramblas Hotel from the 25th - 28th. One less thing to prepare for!
Congratulations, one less thing to worry about.
I've been doing that, too, and reading the trip reports and the blogs. I kind of was inspired by the blogs and created one for our trip. I'll be having my laptop w/me, so I told the kids we could write our reports in Word, and then upload them. I like the idea of posting from the three of our perspectives with the highs & lows.
We are bringing two notebooks with us, our oldest son is autistic and needs to be able to have time alone to wind down. So we figure it is the easiest way to handle it. I just hope we will be able to post our trip there. it was my idea too to have us all post our own perspectives. One day the kids will look back at it and love it.
Wow, you have so much energy!! Um.... are you planning on coming out to So Cal anytime soon?
I'm always planning a trip to SoCal. the problem is getting there. I was down in Redlands in march with some girlfriends. We were going to come to Palm Springs in July and fly out of LAX. However, we decided to fly out of SFO instead and kennel the dogs. And my hubby is still anti-DL until after the cruise. (shh - but somehow I think we will be there in October. Can't miss Nightmare before Christmas)

I have the same concerns, and I hope they iron out the kinks. Although I'm hoping for the best, I'm also pretty good at making the best of things, so I'm lôôking forward to having a great time.
When my friend took the first Panama crossing she said things were a mess upon arriving into LA. It was obvious that they had tried to think of everything, but fell far short. She then took the August cruise, and said that by then things were running much smoother. I am hoping that the same happens for us. I hope the seas calm down, and the operations all start to work like a well oiled machine.

One of the great things about the DIS are the moderated boards (though not everyone always agrees with that. ;)

How true. Back before my second son was born I would frequent the disney parent chat. It was great because it was moderated, in fact, we got to know the moderators quite well. it was a great place to discuss anything from diaper rash to the weather. Anytime someone got on that wanted to be rude, crude, or offensive, they were immediately blocked.
I will have to trust to others to judge the quality of the food. I am not exactly a gourmet. In fact, I adhere strictly to the official USDA food pyramid - the one that has four food groups:

Dark Chocolate

Pizza

Honey Roasted Cashews

Everything else
In short, the food would have to be close to indigestible before I'd even notice.
Besides, the real reason I go on these cruises are the chocolate smoothies - which comprise a major budget item for me on these trips...
mmm - chocolate. Of course, it can't be Hershey's. Only the good CA made stuff.
Hi all
well it's 8am here in the UK and I see you've all been busy with your posts, makes great reading over my coffee this morning. I have so much admiration for those of you who have sad stories of loss to tell. Your words are so inspiring.
As for the weather in the Med in can't be any worse than here in the UK, and as for the food on board, well if it means we all lose a few pounds whilst away that can only be a good thing too.
I spent alot of time yesterday looking at the excursions etc, I guess you guys have already done this. So much to do whilst away!
My Husband and I are off to Rome next Thursday for 4 nights, so we can let you know if it's worth the long bus ride to see the sites there. I'm certain it's going to be.

ohh - so jealous. I would love to just hop over to Rome for 4 nights.
I agree, losing weight wouldn't be a bad thing.
Another hot day here in Pennsylvania.......wish me luck (no air at school!:confused3 ) We have 11.5 school days left around here....how about everyone else??
You know...here, if it is hot and we can't cool off the classrooms, they send everyone home. Only happened once, back when we were year-round and it was 110 in July. We had rolling blackouts and they wanted to cut the A/C at the schools. The fact is, when it's hot in the classroom, the kids can't focus.

If we try really hard we might even catch Andrew. Nah. Who am I kidding.
Did anyone figure out the 3 signed documents we are suppose to bring for checkin? someone in their trip reports said with online checkin there are 3 documents we are suppose to bring. I only remember the cruise contract. Guess I'll have to go check.
Once again DCL QA dept has errored out. I tried completing all the documents online. If you are not catching a flight directly after your cruise, they want to know where you are going. Well...They give you some options, including other. Only, 'other' only offers the ability to enter a USA address. As we are not going to be in the US, you would think they could have opened it up more. I know they could have, the code to do it is very simple. In fact, in about 20 minutes the problem would be solved, and tested. OK - I'll back off the soapbox.
did anyone see how people's luggage were getting picked up and transferred to the Magic? Someone mentioned that it was being picked up at 8am. but didn't mention if they were leaving luggage in the hallway, taking it down to the Disney desk (my preferred method), or waiting in their room for someone to come knock on their door to collect luggage. Ok, I'm getting way too deep into this, I can see.
I'm really interested in learning what to expect. I guess we will have to wait for a few more people to return. I think we have time to learn and adjust.
Ironically....my DH was painting this w/e as well!!:rotfl2: He painted our kitchen (it really needed it!) We still got some beach time in though!!
Ahh - the kitchen. I went away one weekend and he painted the kitchen. i want to repaint it, but want to paint the other rooms first. glad you got to the beach.
"A special note to this trip for those that will be cruising later on, and I think other trips as well, is to bring toilet paper. You will not find it on these side trips"...read this today!!!
Yikes........ewwww.......
Thanks for that info.
That's really true about the toilet paper. Every bathroom i've been in around here hasn't had it and usually doesn't have a seat either. I'd keep a pack of kleenex or baby wipes at the very least in your backpack!!
Double thanks for the info. I have a collapseable toilet seat that I bought when the boys were training. It's great because it helps make a normal size toilet kid size. But it also doubles as a great seat protector. I usually bring it on road trips for the rest areas. I just use hand sanitizer on it back at the car. I might be packing it with me. It will fit into my purse.
Hey all - Capt Crash posted a slideshow on Post #4579 on page 306 that has a link to a slideshow from our 11-Nighter last Sept. The show has 121 images but the last 50 or so are what you are all interested in.
The first couple are from St. Thomas I think. Then about image 55 or so you have some shots of Fish Extenders and door decorations as well.
As someone said - yes the ::MickeyMo frowns on tape on the door but magnetic sheets works well. What I do is I print up a sheet of photo paper and or put one in a protective sheet and attached the magnetic sheet to the door. Some people go all out.
HEE HEE HEE - you'll find a picture of me and DH in here also. It was taken at our DISmeet breakfast in Parrot Cay. Someone organized a time and we all had breakfast to 'meet' some of the other DISsers we may not have had a chance to meet. It was actually fun. Anyway, I'm wearing a red tank top and a patriotic Mickey pin on my shoulder. Don't laugh anyone - I actually like it. I have made a conscious effort to start being in pictures and its getting easier.
So as I mentioned before - those that have the advantage in the contest are those with embroidery skills or creative minds - you should have seen the winner on our cruise - not a space was left untouched. Don't think its in the picture slideshow but at least you now get an idea!
Oh yeah - did I see someone post that they were making a map of DIS cabins? This really helps in making 'deliveries' to our "Fish Mail" Trust me - not only will the kids enjoy it but you the adults will be looking in the mail every time you enter the room
Oh yeah - since that group was awfully big - we had what we call designated floor monitors on each floor. Nothing much was involved, just that they posted a list of all DIS cabins and of any changes if changes were made, they made it on their level. There were a lot of changes and upgrades at the last minute so this came in handy. Those that didn't advise of an upgrade missed out on goodies and those that took over their cabins were probably wondering - what is this and who keeps dropping things off in my fish holder!
WARNING! I would suggest that you take those cable ties or those zip ties to anchor your fish mail down. Sometimes they do have a tendency to 'swim' away. I came across this note hanging where the owners were asking to have their fish extender brought back. Someone had taken it down. (I was making deliveries and saw the note) Well the next day I was dropping off a Secret Mickey present when I saw the 'wayward fish' on the other side of the ship in a doorway -very far from home. The good news is that I was able to 'guide' the fish back to its rightful hanging place. It was then anchored into place!
This is all great information. I will check out the slide show.
This is getting really complicated!! What kind of trinkets do people put into your fish extenders? I'm the kind of person who would be worried that no one would give us anything and I'd look like a big fool.
I'm a bit more concerned about not bringing enough with me.
Oh nothing really big - some examples we've gotten was a postcard, a small baggie with pieces of candy such as a roll, a mint. etc. Small and easily taken care of. Some UK'ers actually brought a postcard from their region, which was really neat actually - one had a receipe for some sort of.......biscuit/scone? We even got a deck of pirate playing cards. Someone dropped off a tiny rubber duckie with a ribbon stating the name of the DIS. Just small things. Others like me gave away big things that we ended up having to ship to the terminal. But one creative person ended up giving a roll of lifesavers with a picture of the Wonder and the caption on it - kinda like those chocolate Hersheys given out at baby showers with a new cover? Small things - one person even had a menu which was torn up and glued to a small wooden back that they turned into a magnet - the menu was from a previous pirate night and had the look of an old map? That was pretty ingenious. I took to getting some, inexpensive trinkets from ports such as a stamp, a postcard, something that I could easily get w/o having to carry. It was more for the fun.
I gave away a small water bottle holder (which took up lots of space and I ended up having to mail over 300 to the terminal at the last minute ) We however aren't that big and REMEMBER: This is voluntary - NO ONE IS REQUIRED! ITS FOR FUN!
Again - another hint - go to Big Lots, Claire's or Dollar Tree if you want to participate - IT IS NOT REQUIRED! IT IS FOR FUN! PLEASE NO ONE FEEL LIKE YOU ARE OBLIGATED!
On my part - I have experienced this and love the idea of 'mail' its fun so I do it. Again, be smart - don't carry anything you have too unless you want too, small, inconsequential things are good. Heck even a small candy from home is good. I saved my life saver covering in the hopes that if I ever get to scrapbook - I can incorporate it into the page!
Once again, some great ideas. i will have to think of what I can give away.
Hey guys - I was like that too - but when I experienced the previous cruisers friendliness, I decided to jump in.
The only way you would not get something if if you upgraded and didn't get your new cabin upgraded on the list. That is why I mentioned the need for a floor list. A central cabin that we can go to look and see if anyone is upgraded (which does happen) Does anyone recall who's making such a list? I'll go and look on page 1 in a minute - boy do we need Andrew or Helen now. Can't believe I just wrote that.! Im never gonna live that down.
We certainly need to keep the cabin list updated. Especially with so many people jumping down to cat12, and not knowing their room numbers yet. i will print out the list before we leave.
Hi,
Does anyone know approximately how many rooms/ people are participating in the fish extenders? I love the idea but don't want to get caught short of whatever I dicide to bring.
Sandra
It might be a good idea to make a list of that too. I fear Andrew's post on the first page will be 15 pages long when printed.
