Story for lwilliam and disnutz (and anyone else who cares to read) about booze on St. Thomas:

Greg and I went on a RCCL Panama Canal cruise for our honeymoon ('95). We started our trip with a few days in Puerto Rico. We were at a great hotel, but it had the biggest casino on Puerto Rico so the cigarette smoke was terrible. As a result, we both ended up with really sore throats and colds.

Fast forward to the cruise -- we were really sick on embrakation day and the first full day, and spend most of the time in bed (and not in a honeymoon sort of way). Our day 2 stop was St. Thomas, and we dragged ourselves out of bed to go onto the island. We were dizzy and hoarse and wandered into a liquor store to bring back some gifts. The owner saw us and said, "You two look terrible. Come with me." He brought us to a tasting bar (where a lot of people were sampling different liqueurs) and said he had the cure for our colds. We kind of shrugged and said okay. He then mixed about 12 different things into one concoction for us and told us to drink it down. I can still recall how much it burned! We bought some liquor, thanked him, and went back to the ship, where we slept off what must have been the equivalent of 2 Long Island Iced Teas.

When we woke up, we were cured. Not just "feeling a little better" cured, but completed cured.

I still sometimes wonder if it was a hallucination, because we've never been able to find that same liquor store again.

Achoooooo - cough, cough....we've gotta find that place!

Soggy Dollar - I know a group going, not me! I'm sure they will have a great time, knowing the group that is going.....I'll be back on the ship while they are 'sightseeing at the Soggy Dollar' - I HATE to miss ship-life!

My post is going to make my dh's eyes roll so far in the back of his head that he may never be able to see again, but I do feel the need to comment on this discussion. I apologize in advance and particularly to my husband.

People pay fees like this on credit cards because of the perks -- for that Continental card, for example, it comes with free access to Continental's elite club room at all airports. So for anyone who flies all the time, it's a good deal. It's the same reason people pay $450 for Amex's Platinum Card -- it gets you into almost all airline elite clubs. So if you're like me and sometimes spend half of your life in airports, it pays for itself very quickly because you get free drinks and snacks, a quiet and clean place to work at airports, and free internet access in the club rooms. Those costs add up really quickly when you're on the road all the time, so those card perks are great.

But for the vacation-only traveler, it's not worth it.

Okay, the credit card industry lesson for the day is complete.

I worked two summers on Cape Cod in Falmouth. I was the prop person for the College Light Opera Co. I spent so muc time going all over the cape collecting things. And it helped that my roomate was a townie. I had the best time there. They are some of my fondest memories. Very magical.

I loved it, but I didn't fully appreciate it until after I left. The off season is horrible because the entire Cape shuts down for winter, and summers are so packed that getting to and from work was a major task, but there was history and the Autumn was nice (though not as nice as Indiana/Midwest, I don't care what any Northeasterner says!), and it was a great place to live. I definitely miss it!

I lived on Otis, and my work site was that hidden base on the road that connected the two bridges... We used to do all our shopping at Falmouth. The one thing that I really remembered about it was that Christmas time was absolutely beautiful in Falmouth. Couple that with the Christmas Tree Shop right over the bridge, and Christmas didn't get much better for the warm fuzzies that I missed after leaving home!

Hello to the cruisers on July 18th. This is going to be our third cruise but its been many many years since our last one. I cant believe how many things has changed. I JUST found out about the cute magnets for the doors and the fish extenders. Im not sure when the cut off is or was for the fish extenders are. I would love to get in on this, I think it sounds so fun. I just printed off the list and would at least like to at participate on our end. I do understand its late. Our room number is,7623 my name is Jo Ann my DH is Darren and we have one DD Brandi (14)

I can help here... Sort of. Like Marcy said, we haven't been able to find it. BUT, I have a picture of the square that the store was right off of somewhere around the house. Maybe I can post it, and we can have a scavenger hunt or something. But like Marcy said, the place has changed so much that it's possible that it's long since been leveled. But I remember everything up to the point that I had the drink. After that...

I was in the AF for 6 years, but my job positions were confined to only the rare overseas bases (Australia and Greenland were really the only two). In the end I spent a year and a half in remote Alaska (which was my nightmare until I got there, and then I fell in love with it) and four and a half at Cape Cod, MA (where I met my lovely wife!). I wish I'd got to see more of the world, but I have no complaints. I'm just going to make Marcy take me, now.

I can still picture it exactly! I had the good fortune to get back there about 8 years ago and believe it or not, the cottage was still there. I couldn't believe that: a) I was able to find it after all these years and that, b) it was still standing! Sweet, sweet memories.

I love the Northeast, and would happily move up there again if given half a chance. Still... As much as I fought Florida (and I DID really fight it... it can be miserable if you don't have the right attitude), I've really grown fond of living down here. Though, to be honest, if not for Disney and all the fun stuff to do around it, I'm not so sure that the pull would be nearly as great.
