Julie big reader here!!

I finished the Kite Runner this weekend... what an amazing, amazing, amazing story.

I'm in the middle of Life of Pi by Yann Martel...about 88 pages in. Has anyone read this? I find it fascinating!

I'm also writing down all these books that you guys have listed... but I have to remind myself...one at a time!

Just bought a few new books that I haent started yet....When You Are Engulfed in Flames by David Sedaris and The Monster of Florence by Douglas Preston.

Anything from David Sedaris is absolutely hilarious, including this newest collection of essays. I also have to agree with 'Robertgp' with books by Sarah Vowell. Another great writer of this style is David Rakoff, who has a couple of great essay collections, fraud and Don't Get Too Comfortable. Great to see other members' tastes in books.

I've become a recent fan of author Sophie Kinsella. I loved her books The Undomestic Goddess and Remember Me. I also really enjoy Cecelia Ahern. PS I Love You was so much better in the book version than the movie!

I plan to read the Shopaholic series by Sophie Kinsella soon!

I read on my Sony Reader....yes....I'm a gadget geek.

All the stuff I read is in digital format.

A man after my own heart. I listen to alot via audible, because I've had a long walk to work lately. I also had eReader put on my Treo - it's very convient but I find the screen a little small. It seems I'm clicking the page down button every paragraph.

I'm hoping that the new iPhone will have some good electonic book/reader software. I love gadgets but carrying so many in my travels is driving me nuts. Laptops, cameras, treo, international cell phone (because the stupid treo doesn't work in Europe), etc.

I can't wait to get the new iPhone :dance3:

I just bought the first Shopaholic book and a Cecelia Ahern book. Not sure of the title, but has Rosie in it.

Oooh..I didn't realize there was one that I hadn't read yet! I'll have to hit the library!

Kevin, forgive my ignorance, but where do you buy the books for the Sony Reader? My wife's vision places her in the legally blind category (can't be corrected with glasses) but she is comfortable with large print. Between Amazon's ads for the Kindle, and your mention of the Sony Reader, we're starting to look at these and have been intrigued.

The only place to buy books for the Sony Reader is the eBook Store through Sony.

I am including a link to Sony's site and there is a link to the eBook site on that page.

I have looked at the Amazon Kindle and I found I liked the Sony better. It's a bit hard to explain, but I just liked the "feel" better. It felt a bit more solid.

Since I have had mine, they have made some upgrades to the Reader that make it even more user friendly.

I suggest you take a look at it. If you want to see it in person, they sell them at Borders.

As they print so few LARGE PRINT books, this would open a whole world as the reader controls the size of the print.

Please understand that I am not trying to sell these things, but I consider it to be up there next to my iPod in the "gadgets I love" category. As a matter of fact...if forced to choose...I would choose my sony Reader.

I was laughing at Julie's reading.

In 6th grade I got detention because I was supposed to be outside playing but I got caught in the classroom readying a book on the Civil War. :confused3 :) :cool1:

I have always read history and I still do but I have gone down the Science Fiction and novel path from time to time. With a few exceptions regarding a particular historical novel series and Harry Potter I just stick to history these days.

History has so many improbable events yet they happened.

For example:

If you wrote a novel about a Jewish professional baseball player who was fluent in a dozen languages being recruited as a spy and then being sent to Europe to kill or kidnap the lead German scientist working on the atom bomb, who would believe the story?

That Sony Reader sounds interesting. I have walls full of books. They are fun to move. NOT. Having them in one little package would be nice but I still have to have the physical book...

Later,
Dan

Kevin, your gadget sounds so neat. However, this is my struggle. I love books. I love the look at books. I love how the book jackets are so neat. I also love going through bargain bins looking for books. Do you miss any of that or do you not share that physical love of books like I do?

That's what I've been reading - we're about 80 miles from the nearest Borders, so I think we'll wait and have a look when we're in Pittsburgh next time.

We are lucky - my wife is able to get books from our state library commission on tape (the technology is early cold war!) and they are extremely helpful. She'd just like the luxury of being able to read on impulse as others are, and the Sony and Kindle seem to fill that niche.

Thanks for mentioning these devices. Hearing what a real person has to say is helpful.

Just recently, I devoured Pillars of the Earth and World Without End by Ken Follett. I was sad to see them end. Loved them both.

I read Pillars recently too. I thought it was amazingly different from other books that I have read, but totally loved it. How did World Without End compare? Are there the same characters and suspense?

At one point in my life, I managed a bookstore.

I love books. Love everything about them. Wish I had a library of my own, but our space is limited.

I have tried the library, but finding blocks of reading time can sometimes be a luxury, so my library books were ALWAYS late. I always felt guilty.

I'm also really bad about waiting to read what I want to read. Rather than be put on a waitlist, I'll just go buy the book I want.

I have 90 full length books on my laptop (bought since I bought the Reader) and took 28 full length books on our recent cruise. These 28 books fit in a device thats 4 inches by 6 inches and 1/2 inch thick. It ways 8 ounces. Two hardcover books take up a huge amount of space when traveling. This is easier.

I used to haunt record stores. I loved albums. Loved the art, loved the notes on the back and loved buying the newest album by my favorites. I didnt think I would ever like CDs, but grew to love them. Now, I dont even enter a record store. Virgin Megastore at DTD is a great place to kill a few hours and I never even go in the store anymore. I buy everything via iTunes now.

Being able to browse and shop at my convenience is a HUGE plus.

So now....I'm saving time, gas, paper and packaging. I'm greener than I thought. :lmao:

World Without End takes place 200 years later in the same location.

I read them back to back and at the very beginning, I was disappointed that the characters were different, but the story is so good, that you quckly get involved with the new characters. They refer to the original characters often.

Both books are excellent stories about something I NEVER thought I'd be interested in.

You guuys have given me some great ideas for my next reading material :)

I am so looking forward to my holiday so I can catch up on my reading - I actually enjoy my 9 hour journey across the pond :) earplugs in and book at the ready although I do have to gag the kids first ;)

We must read all the same books, because you mentioned Into the Wild too and I have read all of these. All very interesting!

I have been making a list from everyone's suggestions too. Now I guess I have to go clean out the library :)

We seriously need to start a book club! I was in one at school, and loved the variety of books we read (if left to my own devices i stick to Historical Friction, a kindred spirit Julie!)

My favorite book of all time is Katherine by Anya Seton. One of the best historical romances ever, in my opinion. However at the moment i am reading Terry Pratchett books (by order of my boyfriend) and so far I can't really get into them. Im gonna keep on trying though! I am also reading Hitchhikers Guide again, thats a good book!

Anyone recommend me some books?

Oh P.S: I've read loads of Philippa Gregory books, i personally prefered the Queens Fool over The Other Bolyen Girl, but each to their own! I love books like Memoirs of a Geisha (read that way before the movie came out) and Jane Austen if i am feeling very interlectual that day. Also a bit of Bill Bryson for some light heartedness never goes amiss.

I love this thread! I've seen many books I know and love and have written the down the names of a bunch to check out. Next to Disney info I love to get good book recommendation.
I am a big fan of the Philippa Gregory books I have read/listened to her whole Tudor series. They are great.
Because I've gotten some great recommendations, I'll offer up mine. Diana Gabaldon Outlander series. There are 6 now and she is working on another. I also have listened as well as read these (I have a long drive). My best friend turned me on to them...I've passed them on to my mom, my grandmother and my sister. If you like historical fiction, romance, Celtic/Scottish culture, they are awesome.
If anyone has read them, let me know. I'd love to talk about them for 10 - 12 hours!!!

I Love, love, love Pratchett's books! If you are reading them in publication order, then the first few are much weaker than the later ones. I still like them, but once you get a few books in they improve vastly. Unfotunately, I have had to make a rule for myself to not read Pratchett anywhere public (ie buses, airplanes, trains, etc) since I often burst out laughing. I once laughed so uncontrollably on an airplane that the only thing keeping me from falling out of my seat was the seatbelt (that is when I made my rule - very embarassing!)

Pdarrah

LOVE Hitchhiker's Guide! What a great one!

Have you read "Into Thin Air" or "Under the Banner of Heaven" also by Jon Krakauer? I haven't --- but if they are as good as Into the Wild, then I want to!!
