I'm a huge reader too. What are your favorite books?

I am a big reader too, I would love to hear some of Julie's or any other Disers' suggestions.

Here are some I read a while ago and liked (they aren't new, but I just saw the movies too, so they are fresh in my head).

The Kite Runner- The book is excellent! But you will cry... I just saw the movie and it was pretty good, but the book is MUCH better.

The Other Boleyn Girl- This book was very good too. Some parts drag because Anne Bolyen can get a little annoying, but I am fascinated with this time period and the story of the Tudors. I just saw the movie and it was terrible! It barely followed the book at all and left out many important details. Skip the movie and read the book.

The Namesake- Also very good, but you might cry at this one too...not as bad as with the Kite Runner though. Haven't seen the movie yet, but the book is very interesting and it gives you a really neat perspective on people moving to America and trying to hold on to their culture from their native country.

Anyone else have suggestions? I just picked up - If You Lived Here, I'd Know Your Name, I guess I'll see if I like it!

- Memoirs of a Geisha
- One hundred years of solitude
- Animal Farm
- The Buddenbrooks

I loved the Harry Potter series and Angels and Demons by Dan Brown.

I am dyinggggggggggg to read the His Dark Materials set (the Golden Compass trilogy)

I also liked this book called Soldier X and Persepelis (sp) even as a graphic novel,it was a very good book.

Although I haven't read much "literature" since college a few years ago! I was also a kid who got punished for reading too much!! My mom literally punished me by taking away my books and making me go outside and play in the summer time. She did the exact opposite to my sister!

I'm a big reader too. I have enough large plastic totes filled with books to fill a wall and then some. Love James Patterson, Dean Koontz, Iris Johansen, Anne Rice, and Sue Grafton to name a few. When I find an author that I like I tend to read anything and everything I can get my hands on. Reading right before bed is a way for me to wind down. :)

I love Margaret Maron and Lilian Jackson Braun for mysteries. Really interesting non-fiction reads lately have been When the Astors Owned New York and Assassination Vacation (Sarah Vowell). Assassination Vacation is weird, but if you like a bit of presidential history, and you're on the left side of the political spectrum, you'll definitely enjoy Vowell.

I loved the Harry Potter series very good book.

I so agree

I ust bought two new books but I have to get my paintings out of the way before I crack them open! I am very OCD gotta finish one proect before I start another!!!

I love to read James Patterson....any of his fans here??

A bunch of us foodies on the dining reviews board spontaneously started a book club. The first book is Rebecca, but I'm not liking it that much.

I'm pretty eclectic with my book reading. I loved the Harry Potter series, as do most people I know. I read anything from the gamut of romance, chick lit, mysteries, sci fi fantasy (depending on the genre), and anything in between.

One of my favorite series of books I've discovered for "bookies" (aka book versions of foodies) are written by Jasper Fforde. Start with The Eyre Affair and if you're not hooked, you don't have to read the rest of the series. ;)

I was cheering (silently, as I was at work at the time) when I heard Julie say she got into trouble for reading books instead of doing homework. ;)

OMG! A fellow Tuesday fan! :cool1:

I don't know anyone who reads Jasper, but I SO love that series. It is definitely a bit eclectic, but really worth a try!

What did you think of his other spin off books The Fourth Bear and The Big Over Easy?

:wave2: OH, count me in too, I love Tuesday Next - although I didn't like the most recent one as much.

I turned on a co-worker to the series also, she tried the nursery rhyme series but said the rhyming was driving her nuts and she didn't finish it. I personally haven't tried them.

I also read lots of detective/mystery authors - Sue Grafton, Janet Evanovich, James Patterson, Richard North Patterson, JD Robb, Dean Koontz and lots more. I belong to audible.com so I 'listen' to a lot of books, I spend a lot of time in planes, trains and automobiles so I need lots of distractions.

LOL! Well, I like Thursday Next. ;) I think I like her because she's as snarky as I am! My posts are mysteriously showing up BEHIND people who quote me. Wacky stuff today! You're the second clairvoyant I've responded to. ;)

Oh, I really liked the Nursery Crimes stories. I thought The Big Over Easy was better, but a lot of the plot devices (mixing fictional and "real" people together in the books) is carried over here.

The Nursery Crime books don't have rhyming, so what was she reading? :confused3 Did she fall into a Dr. Seuss novel? :rotfl2:

I also have read Sue Grafton, from the very beginning of her alphabet series. I just finished T is for Trespass.

Oh, brother, Yes, Thursday Next .... And you know, I re-read my post and thought something isn't quite right there.

I have the Fourth Bear but haven't started it yet. I've been saving it for a trip I'm taking the end of July.

If you liked the Thursday Next books, you might enjoy On a Pale Horse by Piers Anthony. Totally different from Thursday, but sort of the same "inside view" of things.

And I perpetuated it :rotfl2: It seemed okay to me - I have a block on her name, I call her Tuesday all the time.

I am! I just joined the James Patterson forum and have read most, if not all, of his books. I've been on the JP mailing list for awhile which just causes me to spend more money because I know exactly when the next book is coming out. :)

I just finished reading The Kite Runner the other day...what a heartbreaking, yet ultimately redemptive story. I'm having JC read it... I want to know what he thinks of it... his perspective on it... I'm hesitating on whether or not to see the film.

Saw The Namesake, didn't read the book. The movie was great...maybe I'll read the book now.

Read "Into the Wild" last summer. Great book. True story...tragic. Movie was amazing.

I'm finishing up The Call of the Wild by Jack London this weekend...
I'm going back and reading all those books I "should have" read this summer.

Books are a wonderful thing and I enjoy many styles, and I see the other posters do as well.

I have read the "Left Behind" series by Tim LaHaye and Jerry Jenkins.
David McCuullough books, including 1776, John Adams, Teddy Roosevelt are historical and enjoyable. I received the John Adams DVD set for Father's Day.
Tom Clancy is another author I enjoy.
Many business/service books, as I am in sales.
And also many Disney themed books.

Keep on reading!

Dave

Ok, I have a wide variety of books that I read, so here goes. I love Historical Fiction and have read a ton of Jean Plaidy's books...Victoria Victorious is among my favorites.
The Marie Antoinette novel, Abundance, is also really good.

I enjoy a good biography or autobiography. The most recent one I read was Born Standing Up by Steve Martin. Heavier Than Heaven about Kurt Kobain was a great one. I am on the look out for an in depth book on Princess Diana.

Memoirs are another favorite and the most recent one was The Glass Castle by Jeanette Wells.

Sitting on my night stand now is The Sisters, a saga about the Mitford Family.

Some other recent reads are The Last Madame, The Secret Lives of Bees, The Lovely Bones, A Confederacy of Dunces (a major favorite) and 1000 Places to See Before You Die.

I am always on the look out for another good book, so any recommendations are welcome!

Another reader here!

ALWAYS had a book w/ me. Forget getting in trouble for reading instead of homework...I always had one in my desk and would get in trouble for reading in class!

Whenever we had to read a novel I usually had it read within 1-2 days and then had to go back and refer back each chapter to answer the questions in the weeks to follow.

My reading has slowed down w/ two kids, but I still read more than most. My book tastes are all over the map, I'm just as likely to read a trashy romance novel as I am to read a classic or cutting edge literary work. Here are a few of my favorites...

Books:
A Tree Grows in Brooklyn - Betty Smith
Snowcrash - Neal Stephenson
Ender's Game - Orson Scott Card
Pastwatch: The Redemption of Christopher Columbus - Orson Scott Card
The English Patient - Michael Ondaatje
Pillars of the Earth - Ken Follet

Authors:
Neal Stephenson
Orson Scott Card
Anne McCaffery
Alison Weir (both fiction and non fiction)
Jennifer Weiner
Nora Roberts

As for series....
Dragonriders of Pern (McCaffery)
Harry Potter (J K Rowling)
Dark Materials (Philip Pullman)
Wheel of Time (Robert Jordan)
Stephanie Plum (Janet Evanovich...I've been reading her since she wrote for Loveswept back in the 80's!... along w/ Iris Johansen, Tami Hoag, Kay Hooper, Charlotte Hughes, and many others)
Eragon (Christopher Paolini)
Kingdom Kapers (Ridley Pearson)
Peter and the Starcatches (Ridley Pearson and Dave Barry)

Oh and if anyone really likes Phillippa Gregory's stuff you should check out Alison Weir's two fiction novels (Innocent Traitor and The Lady Elizabeth)...both are excellent! :thumbsup2

I'll have to look into Jasper Fforde, his stuff looks interesting!
