Josh McDaniels Pats-Colts-Pats

NFL Network analyst Charley Casserly says he was informed that McDaniels pursued the Colts job.

He didn't do anything illegal but I feel it was a punk move as others have stated, assistant coaches were hired and now the Colts have to scramble for a new HC.

Maybe kraft told josh if you stay until BIll retires you will be our new head coach. Whenever that time will come.By nfl rules they have to interview Minorities for the job. But they can hire whoever they want.

Just my thinking nothing to back this up.

So you can agree to terms knowing you can't sign a contract until after the Super Bowl. It is clear there is some type of agreement as he HIRED three coaches from other teams to be on his staff. He didn't think about them when he backed out only himself. Those men were in process of moving their families. What is idiotic is if McDaniels never agreed to take the job why he/his agent or the Patriots didn't IMMEDIATELY announce the Colts didn't have agreement. Why did McDaniels call Chris Ballard the Colts GM last night and back out?

I'm a Patriots hater and proud to admit it. There are a few players on that team but Bill Belichick and McDaniels have shown their true colors and pack of integrity now.

Also McDaniels never asked to speak to Andrew Luck.

I would throw Robert Kraft in with Belichick and McDaniels. It starts at the top.

On a brighter note, I thought Ballard did a great job with the presser considering all that the Colts organization has been through since Sunday.

Punk move by McDaniels but I guess he will be the next Patriots head coach.

Like I said, I'm a Pats. fan. Don't hate me. :) I didn't realize McDaniels hired the assistant coaches and that they actually started moving their families. (Is that true some already moved)?

And as a Pats fan, if this is the case, I do agree it's a crappy move on McDaniels part. I wonder if the assistant coaches that were hired knew he still hadn't signed on the dotted line. And you would think the Colts would have made this clear to them as well. And I really would be saying this even if the teams were reversed. My guess is there is a lot of behind the scenes crap we common folk aren't privy too.

As a Broncos fan, the Colts should be celebrating in the streets. Sweatshirt Boy was the WORST head coach. Beyond bad. Even the news is reporting how bad he was in Denver. It was monumental how bad he was.

Colts, you dodged a huge bullet!

As a Colts fan living in Denver (so Denver is my 2nd team), I agree. I wasn't really happy about this move. But it leaves the Colts at the bottom of the pool of coaches now.

Heather....I don’t know if any actually moved their families....but the coaches themselves had been hired and working in Indy, and were picked by McDaniels for their new positions.

Thanks for explaining it to me! I really didn't know the whole story. :)

Reminds me of Oregon Ducks coach Willie Taggart. Taggart stating I'm not going back to FL. Ducks offer Taggart $20 million. Taggart constantly insisted he's staying with the Ducks despite rumors. Then Taggart immediately takes head coaching job at FL State, which is Taggart's home State.

Personally I think what happened was that The Patriots were banking HUGE to win the SB and Belichick would of probably retired resulting in a whole new coaching staff & team. Therefore McDaniels at the time was looking for a job, just like Matt Patricia. Then the shtf. Football is a very selfish business.

I guess McDaniels really wanted to be like Bill who had the Jets job and resigned. (He didn't want to be the "HC of the NYJ") Punk move.

KARMA! Revenge! the oh so upstanding Colts....hmmmm. Weren't they the team that whined that they thought some balls were under inflated a couple of years back???? Funny for the past TWO years not one football coach, owner, referee, announcer, playerhas mentioned the IMPORTANCE of the inflation level of a football.

Karma would be the Colts ending up with a Patriots coach of questionable character and integrity. This is a great glimpse to the type of person who could have been leading our locker room.

Revenge? Maybe he got revenge on the Colts head office by doing this, but why drag other coordinators into it? Why did they deserve to be part of his revenge?

People do. Probably every day. Not so publicly, but I'm aware of people accepting jobs, then just never showing up. Never mind letting the employer know.

Yup it's honestly not that bad. I'm sure at least a few in this thread have done it as well even though they are taking Josh to task over this.

As for the assistant coaches who are left out in the cold, they should have waited till the deal was signed. Sucks but they are all big boys.

Yes it is bad. How young are you? There is a huge difference between a cashier, an auto mechanic, an engineer, or even an executive position declining after accepting a job. There are 100 other candidates lined up behind that person wanting the job. The company can just go to the next on the list.

NFL coaches, not so much. Everyone has known throughout the playoffs that Sweatshirt Boy accepted the head coaching position. This is a common thing in the NFL, to secure coaches before they can officially sign their contracts. 99.9999% of candidates honor their commitments, it is what is done.

To leave the Colts high and dry without many coaching prospects because all the good ones are in their spots for next season is a crap move beyond compare. If he had even a shred of integrity, he would have fulfilled his commitment for a year to give the Colts a season to recruit a new coach. Then he could go back to the Pats.

McDaniels is a good Offensive Coordinator. He probably got cold feet when it finally sunk in that the world was going to see, yet again, what a horrific head coach he would be. So, because he has no morals, scruples or anything resembling integrity, he waited until the last minute to screw the Colts. If he was so worried about his children moving, he wouldn't have been in active talks the whole time with the Colts about hiring assistant coaches.

Colts fans I have to laugh. Two words...Jim Irsay!!! Who in the world would ever want to work for that fool?

And I had to laugh when the Colts GM Chris Ballard stated "The rivalry is back on". What rivalry? You can't have a rivalry between a hammer and a nail.

Ad hominem attacks never work well. As for my age, I'm likely older than you.

In a world where NFL franchises are ruthless in firing their head coaches, sometimes in the middle of the season, coaches owe these teams nothing. McD owed the Colts nothing. He had a change of heart, wanted to stay home, he has every right to do it.

There are still several good coaches available that the Colts can interview. If they don't like what they see, too bad. Call Pagano back for another season. Asking McD to coach for a year just to fulfill his obligation is laughable and I can't imagine any Colts wanting that type of situation. They want someone who will devote all of themself to winning.

I'm not sure anyone's arguing that Josh wasn't well within his rights to turn down the offer at this point?

It doesn't make him any less un-hireable, though. I doubt that another team will consider him for their head coaching position after how this went down.
